Here's a list of games that would suprise me.  Whether there was something great about them or it did something that I thought was not possible in a computer game, here's the list...

Doom (Revolutionized the FPS genre)
Myst (Amazine graphics for it's time)
Balder's Gate (Made PC rpgs popular again)
Postal 2 (probably the most offensive game ever)
Syberia (Restored my faith in the adventure genre)
Freelancer (I now want to learn how to code and try to make a game because of this game, this game has so many great elements and it's my favorite game this year)
System Shock 2 (creepiest game ever)
Grim Fandango (proof that 3-d adventure games can be great)
Heroes of Might and Magic 2 (another great game)
Quake (Doom in 3-d, nuff said)
Deus Ex (Great story)
Warcraft 2 (helped make rts games popular, revolutionized genre)
Halflife (for obvious reasons)
Black and White (Amazing AI)
Alone in the Dark 1 (1st game to scare me)
Commander Keen (just an awesome side scroller, great game during the shareware age)
NO SOUP FOR YOU!

What is the obvious reason?

Oh god please don't say counterstrike....

for single player and modibility I 100% agree but not for CS....

What other games...hmmm...
I agree with most of those....

Most Definitely Mafia...ranks up with HL, and DX

Very true about Alone in the Dark...

Trespasser: one of my favorites...I know almost everyone hated it....I remember getting the game but my mom wanted to go to buy some trees or bushes or something and I sat in the car savoring over the manual...

and when I installed and played it I was not disappointed one bit....it was slow on my computer but the physics and interactivity was immense....

Yes I mean the single player and modability, I hate CS.
I guess I'm one of those people that hated Tresspasser.

Forgot to add Planescape Torment, probably the best rpg I ever played.

Got to agree with that list. But I'm kinda missing Grand Theft Auto 3. For giving a first sense of actual freedom and the sheer fun-factor.
Playing: World of Warcraft / Monkey Island SE&&Reading: Worldwar: Upsetting the Balance - Harry Turtledove&&Watching: Repo! The Genetic Opera
