How do you feel about cutscenes in games? Not just adventure games but any kind of games that you play. Do you like them in adventure games but hate them in FPS'? Do you find they slow the game down or that they give you a nice little break from gaming? Would you like to see more? Less? The same?

Personally, I love cutscenes. I think of them as a reward for accomplishing something in the game.

What do you think?

Deleted UserI like them in general... when they're done well. Too many games designers fancy themselves as directors and really don't know enough about filmic language to be able to pull them off. The fact that game's companies don't even think about hiring proper directors for their games is an insult - they think they can do it themselves, and 99% of the time they're really badly done...

I love cutscenes! I think that they give the game the 'action' everybody need. Even 2D adventure games had quite good cutscenes which i loved too.

Generally, i think that the best cutscenes can be found at...........Grim Fandango!!! I just love everything in that game, along with the cutscenes, of course
.

Monkeybone, i really agree with you!!! I don't understand why they dont' get directors! The best cutscene in a game (all genres) was in MAFIA!!

Honestly this game has great cutscenes. The director did some tricks and i was stunned when i played it. Especially the ending is the best i have ever seen in a non-adventure game!!! Simply awesome!!! The song was great (credits)....

A MUST-PLAY GAME FOR ALL GAMERS!!!

Godfather, you probably won't believe this....but I don't own Grim Fandango.
But with all the good things I've been reading about it here lately, I'll remedy that the next time I visit a game store!

I love cutscenes.  They usually are well made, tie up the parts you have played so far, visually show the result and lead you on to the next part.

I play Adventure, RPG's, Action and like them in all my genres.

I also love Cut scenes, when done well.

I see it as a reward, after playing the game for a while. Ending of a chapter.

It's just like when I was young reading my first books. Every chapter ended with a drawing. It was very hard for me not to turn the page before I was finished reading.

It certainly doesn't seem like one does it!
Isn't there anybody out there who hates cutscenes? Kind of like the psuedo-public service announcement that they run on Extended Play on TechTV. You know the one about limiting the length of cutscenes to 30 seconds etc.

I mean they mostly feature action games on the show, and they really seem to complain a lot if the game has long (or frequent) cutscenes. Is hating cutscenes just an action gamer phenomenon, or is Extended Play just goofing around?

Cutscenes are awesome when done well.  They advance the plot a whole lot in a short amount of time and serve as a reward for accomplishing a goal.  Sometimes, though, they can be longwinded and downright painful when a game designer fancies himself a director, as MB said.  Metal Gear Solid definetly comes to mind here.

A lengthy and unskippable cut scene that occurs just before a timed sequence where you can be killed if you don't react properly within a couple of seconds is not a good thing. This isn't the fault of the cut scene itself so much as the timed sequence.

It's also a nuisance to have to sit through a long and unskippable cut scene every time you start the game.

Cut scenes rule in most cases, but there are a number of things they can do to be just downright bad. If they're too long, badly done, too plentiful (MGS2 I hate you so), timed badly or unskippable.

Sure do love cut scenes!
Especially like to be able to replay my favorite ones during a game.  I did this many times with Grim Fandango (ps It's so great to find so many fans of this game here!
).  I also greatly enjoyed the cut scenes in Syberia.  In Riven I loved watching the creatures in the lagoon and riding the aerial car.  I believe that well executed cut scenes really add to the game.  One of the cut scenes at the end of Post Mortem was priceless.

I also like to have the ability to skip them, if I'm retracing my steps.  The only real heat this topic seems to be getting is from our enthusiasm!

Still adventuring after all these years!

Patiently awaiting The Last Crown: Haunting of Hallowed Isle, and Bracken Tor...

... and Asylum if it's not tooooo scary...

Deleted UserI love cut scenes. Usually I think the cutscene's are more beautiful than the usual characters that we play. But on the other hand, I don't remember what game , I had to restart the game and seing twice or 3 times thesame cut scene is boring!!! It's even irritatingwhen you can't press anything when it come's to that part. the developers should think of an esc. key for emergency purposes!!!

Deleted UserSarah - do you know what's bad? When the cutscenes are AMAZING and the game is terrible! There was this game, sort of like Shadow Of The Beast but cartoony and had a dragon boss which was like that... yuck!

Cutscenes in games are great, adventure games really.  Look at Grim Fandango, or The Curse of Monkey Island, The Dig, Gabriel Knight 2 and 3.  I found them always to be a reward.
I must say the game with the best cutscenes was never an adventure game, it was Lucasart's Outlaws.  Whenever you beat one of the massive levels, there was a beautiful cutscene if your in dept revenge, and it moved the plot to the next local, and gave backstory.  Other companies should look at that game when making cutscenes

Deleted UserHi all- I think GOOD cut-scenes are very important but BAD ones are just pointless- also, some cut scenes help you to do the levels and inform you sometimes

I say- KEEP GOOD CUT-SCENES!

I like cutscenes a lot as long as they don't go on forever like in No One Lives Forever (no pun intended).  Some games are cooler without cutscenes though like Metroid Prime.

The cutscenes in the games I have played so far have all been amazing, I love them and they really help give the games a movie like quality and make you feel as if the events are really happening.

Bring on more cutscenes!
