Tried to read Tom Bombadil recently and instantly fell asleep each time after two pages .

It was called "The Pelican Brief" and the movie version was about a bunch of ocean birds fighting for the right to don BVD underwear. Julia Roberts played the seamstress who patterened the numerous pairs of tidy-whities for our feathered friends.
No, I'm just kidding, Randdom. It was called The Pelican Brief though, and even though I didn't read the book, I enjoyed the movie a lot.

Did you know that Stephen King wrote Rose Red under a psuedonym and you're right, it is horrible.

As Robert Jordan has taught us over and over and over and over again, poorly written sci fi/fantasy can be a truly horrible thing.
Speaking of Jordan, the average reader review at Amazon for his newest books sits at a healthy 1.5 out of 5 stars. That's quite an average with over 1250 ratings submitted.

Detective novels: 'The Big Sleep' by R. Chandler, 'The Maltese Falcon' by D. Hammett, 'L.A. Confidential' by James Ellroy (the film version of this is much better!).
Irish literature: 'The Butcher Boy' by Patrick McCabe
Luckily we also had to read some good books (Bram Stoker's 'Dracula', 'Dubliners' by Joyce, ...)
