There's one good King movie and that one is called "The Stand". All others, including "The Shining", were incredibly boring to watch. Luckily Jack was in that flick, or I wouldn't even have watched the ending.

Let's step it up a little: All Lovecraft movies (or borrowed influences) are at least ten times better than his books are. I tried reading two or three of them, being bored took on an entirely new meaning.

Obviously, it's a matter of taste, and not lack of it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

So what have I been reading the last couple of months:
David and Leigh Eddings:
- The Belgariad (5 books)
- The Malloreon (5 books)
- Belgarath the Sorcerer
- Polgara the Sorceress

I was standing at the book store, desperately needing a new book and figured I'd try my luck on a fantasy book (huge gamble, lot's of commercial crap there).
I pick up part one of the Malloreon and from page one

I'm absolutely hooked. These books are great, and I just have to make the comparison: it is like Tolkien on speed.

Maybe the compionship would have been quicker as well if they'd just dumped those darn hobbits

Aaah!
You almost give me a heart-attack! The only good (*plain* good) Lovecraft based movie I can think of is The Dunwich Horror. Also, Resurrected (based on Dexter Ward) was just OK.

That's interesting. I've not read any Lovecraft so I'm not sure what films are based on his work, but I did see one film that were based on Lovecraft shorts I'm sure - it was a sort of compilation film in the style of "Creepshow" and "Tales from the Darkside" that was absolute toss, so if that's ten times better than the source material there is something seriously wrong.  ???

As for Stephen King, again, I'm behind on the reading, but some of the films are so truly awful I can't believe the books are worse.

Excellent ones - The Shining, Shawshank Redemption, Stand By Me
Good/okay ones - Misery, Salem's Lot, Cujo, Maximum Overdrive (bad film, but I like it!), Carrie, The Green Mile, It, The Running Man, Silver Bullet.
Bad Ones - Christine, Apt Pupil, Thinner, The Dark Half, Sleepwalkers, Lawnmower Man, Cat's Eye, Children of the Corn (and multiple sequels), Firestarter, The Langoliers, Graveyard Shift, Sometimes They come back (and multiple sequels), Pet Semetary (and sequel)

These are only ones i've seen. I haven't put myself through some of the dross they make out of his stories.

Ofcourse,  Shawshank is by King, great movie. I always forget those non-horror books/movies.

Come to think of it.. how do we classify "The Running Man"?

A brief foray into Sci-fi covered up by his pseudonym.

Or alternatively, an Arh-neld film. They have their own genre you know.

Deleted UserJust an update, but I'm currently getting into Stephen Kings Dreamcatcher in a BIIIIG way. I've only started reading it today, but I'm on page 294 of a pretty big book, so I'm around halfway through... wow. It's good. You want aliens? Ufo's? Crazy military personell? Bizzare happenings? Madness? Bitter cold? Butt-wrenching deaths? Thrills? Spills? Chills? Mystery? Odd red fungus? This is the book for you!

I'm not joking... I haven't been this gripped since I read I Am Legend. Fantastic!

BTW Which Cthulu-based book is most worth reading?

I liked "The lurker on the threshold" very much. (Not sure of the title in english)

Now I'm reading for the first time some Harlan Ellison (I cannot find "I have no mouth-the game" so...). Wow, just wow. Dark dark depressing good good.

I started reading Dreamcatcher last year, and although I thought it started out great, after I got a little more than half way thru I got totally bored with it and bounced it off the wall,
I find that happens to me with most of Stephen King books, he starts out great, but im my opinion he just drags the hell out of everything, he gos on and on and on.......
I admit he has written some great stuff, I loved "Salems lot", "The Shining" "Carrie" "The Stand" ( even though sometimes the Stand really dragged on )and a few others, but now I dont even buy his books, I only will try to read one if someone gives me one, and most times I cant finish them, but I will watch Dreamcatcher the movie when it comes out on video, looks pretty good to me.

Well.... maybe Ill try again, but no matter what people say about movies, I always have to see them for myself,
sometimes I like em even though nobody else does. LIke 13 Ghosts, most people didnt like it but I loved it, reminded me of an adventure game with the walls moving and trying to get in the right areas so the ghosts can get ya, I thought it was great.

Deleted UserJessica, I just finished Shogun too even though I've had the book for quite a few years.  Loved it.

I also have to say that Stephen King's books are SOOOO much better than the movies!
