I value both equally.
When I'm thinking about buying a game, whether new or used, I try and find as many reviews as possible.

If it's a professional one, I try to find other reviews by the same author about games I have already played, to see if I agree.  I also check the general preferences of the site (mainly adventure/RPG or mainly FPS, a nice mix) and what kind of games they list under "adventures". If they list actiongames under adventures without any remark to make the distinction I will make sure to read a lot of other reviews so I don't buy an actiongame by mistake.

If it's a review by Joe Average I keep in mind to ignore the highest (fanboy) and lowest (moron) ratings.

I also check the newsgroups to see if any known problems/bugs/gripes have been posted and if there are fixes/patches for this.
Beta-tester of 'The Path', 'Rhiannon', 'Scratches', 'Hope Springs Eternal', 'Time Stand Still', 'Frasse and the Peas of Kejick', '1893: A World's Fair Mystery', 'Carte Blanche' and 'Oakhaven Plantation' a.o.&&

I find the best thing is to get the average opinion of a lot of people, which is why I like gamerankings.com, which averages game reviewers ratings and also has user ratings.
But an average ranking doesn't have to mean much more, either. An average ranking of Britney Spears will probably be pretty high, but I prefer the music by Stravinsky or Ligeti a lot more. If you go by average ratings you'll probably not miss the greatest games that most agree on, like Grim Fandango, but that's all.

The rating in itself is useless. As has been said, what's important is why the game got the rating it did. If I read that someone got irritated by a game that had too much dialogue, I know that it probably won't bother me, since I was ok with that in for example TLJ.
