I have a vivid memory of the first time I saw a 3D game.  I was in a game shop in a mall, just browsing, and inside a case they had a display showing some gameplay of detective-looking gentleman (sort of Sherlock Holmes era) walking around a house.  I was floored, and just stood there watching the display for a while.  I was too young to buy it, and didn't have a system that could run it even if I could, so I didn't really pay attention to what the game was called.  Can anyone here help me identify the game?  Here's what I know:

- The character shown looked like a Sherlock-Holmes era detective.  Brown coat and pants, bowler hat, and a mustache.  This being an early 3D game, he was of course low-poly, and looked sort of fat; kind of shaped like a bowling pin.

- I believe the game was one in which the environments were actually just 2D images, but gave the illusion of being 3D when the character was moving around in them (like the first Resident Evil).

- The character appeared to be walking around a large house or mansion, looking for clues.

- This was likely early '90's ('93 or '94 maybe?)

I know that's not a lot to go on, so I'm kind of hoping someone here played the game, and this just rings some bells.  Thanks!

Alone in the Dark, perhaps? The character sounds somewhat like Edward Carnby.

I think you guys are probably right.  I looked up some screenshots of the game, and they do indeed look a lot like what I remember, though I was a little off in his description.  Thanks.

I agree, it does sound like Alone in the Dark (either 1 or 2).

It is also possible (though unlikely) that you were looking at Time gate: Knight's Chase, though the main character does not look like the one you described.

Are you sure it isn't a Sherlock Homes game, The Rose Tattoo?  That came out in 1996.  Here are some pictures:  http://www.adventurearchiv.de/s/holmesrosereviewe.htm

Nope, it wasn't that.  The character was definitely made of polygons, and sort of cartoony looking, where the guys in these pictures look like actual actors.  Thanks though!
