I estimate that I am about 35% to 40% thro; the game. The last things I managed to do were AFAIK to do everything possible in Davies' office (after having used the picklock and entered !)
. Following that, I followed Rose's request to get John's cigarette/cigar lighter.
BUT I CAN"T GET HIM TO GIVE OR LOAN IT TO ME !
I assume that I have missed some (maybe small ??) action previously – but I'm not prepared to go over the whole game from the beginning again just to try to find the missing item - possibly a small & insignificant one ! I have already been over much of the recent sequences 2 or even 3 times – but without success !
IF ANYBODY HAS A SAVE GAME AS CLOSE TO THAT POINT AS POSSIBLE..(Preferably shortly BEFORE, but alternatively just AFTER). PLEASE CONTACT ME AT lengreen@hotmail.com and mark it "Cogn" or I'll delete it together with the piles of spam I get all the time

Oh dear, oh dear !! Can nobody help ? I would like to continue and complete this episode.
I suppose many here must have played played & finished it ???
A save would be ideal somewhere fairly near to the point I'm stuck at. Or at least suggestions as to what trigger(s) I missed, N.B. I went over the whole morgue sequence 2 additional times but this was NOT the missing link !!!

I'm sorry Len. I don't own the game and haven't played it.
Have you considered emailing the developer to request a save?
Many thanks Jenny for your (AS ALWAYS) sensible & down to earth reply.
If all else fails, I'll take your advice.
To date, I have NEVER had to request a save or help from a Developer or Publisher.
Throughout the MANY years I have been completely stuck more times than I care to relate or admit !! However I have always managed to continue every game till its gory end - walkthru, save-compilation, help from one or other of the AG webzines or frequently by kind gamers who have sent me a save or at least spoilers !
I am wondering whether ANYBODY on JA has actually played and completed the episode (and # 2 is due out VERY shortly) !: (
this seems unlikely since it's a Jane Jensen game !!!

If you don't want to ask the developer for help just yet, there's a playthrough of the game on YouTube.
It's in 12 parts, though I don't think it's complete yet.

Maybe it will give you some idea what you may have missed.
One thing the YouTube player says is that your actions "have consequences" -- which may mean something you do (or don't do) early in the game may put you on a different path and prevent you from getting answers from a walkthrough (unless you've been following it step by step from the beginning.)
Not sure what triggers getting the lighter but I'll list a few things I've done. Perhaps it will help.
Spoiler AlertAfter doing everything you can in Davies office go back to the crime scene after everyone else has left. Check out all the new hotspots including the cans of paint. Use your 'powers' on everything available. Visit the cemetery, take the flower from the grave next to Scott's grave and use it on Scott's grave. Talk to the girl that appears and talk to her again on the bench. Obviously you have been back to see Rose again since you know about the lighter. (whenever you are offered a choice in dialogue I've chosen the helpful responses) Agree to the training or help she offers. Grab the box of donuts on the table in the middle of the shop. Return to headquarters and walk up to John's desk. Use the magnifier icon on John's desk. (not on John) Use the hand icon on the lighter. He says no. Do it again and this time Erica explains that she needs it to continue her training and he lets her take it.
If I can find where these saves are stored I will upload one after geting the lighter to my host site.

I wrote the following a few days ago but at the last moment I copied and saved it and did not paste it till now. As I wrote (near the end) I had a feeling that I was going to get irrevocably stuck again later. Unfortunately this feeling turned out to be VERY true. I WILL EXPLAIN IN ANOTHER POST --- which I fear will spell the end of "Cognition" for me!! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I took the bull by the horns
and almost against my will replayed the game from the beginning!!
I did this reluctantly since I dislike intensely having to replay about a third of ANY game – but it was obvious that I had missed SOMETHING, goodness knows what since all my futile attempts to find it had failed !
This time, I downloaded the only walkthrough I have seen and followed it slavishly word for word! I didn't notice ANYTHING I had *obviously* overlooked – but I suppose I was wrong!!
However, I came across 3 items which I had come across originally but which the W/T instructed I to do but again these was IMPOSSIBLE to perform. One SEEMS unimportant, another seems fairly serious, and the third is VERY worrying – I only hope that it is superfluous or can/should be done later – it says to join 2 antique pieces. But after trying for well over a dozen times I cannot get this to happen !?!
And so I feared that again I would not be able to get John's cigarette lighter which seems essential for continuing the game. However, I was wrong again and this time IT WOKED !!! So I can now continue and see if I can carry on to the end without getting stuck again !!! N.B. I have kept dozens of saves if anybody else needs any – although as yet I haven't found out WHERE they are stored !!!

As you acquire the antique pieces (le pendu) they can be assembled in the inventory panel. Click the tab to open the inventory.
Next click on the plus sign icon. Notice below that the plus sign becomes brighter and the two pieces (or more if you have them) have changed from a gray to a brown color. (I know it's hard to see even for someone without vision problems)
Next click on one of the pieces and it becomes highlighted. Click on the other piece.
The pieces have now been combined.
Feel free to share the other two items if necessary.
