I know next to nothing about this so if I talk rubbish please don't bash into me !
As a matter of fact, the first time I ever heard of this &/or its connection to the Mayan Calendar was just a few days ago when Traveller here mentioned it in passing here on the JA Forum – in a joking fashion I seem to remember.
But then, maybe being grounded much more in science than worldly cultures I should have been more aware !

I am not sure but I think that a few people (Probably none on JA) are very credulous in general and took the thing seriously and I just heard that some even held "End of World parties" – or was that just any old excuse for a party  - I know we used to feel that way when we were MUCH younger.

Anyway – no catastrophe in Australia during 21-12-12 or the Far East. The middle East will be Out of dander

in about an hour's time and Europe shortly afterwards.

Keep the flag flying USA for another dozen hours and the 'whole world' will be liberated from Mayan prophesies !!!

Let's hope the next 5000 years will be a better time than the past 5000.

Halleluiah !!!

I hope so too, Trav !!
But being I suppose by nature somewhat of a pessimist, I unfortunately have grave doubts !

We've just seen on TV a 2 part (50 minutes or so each) National Geographic programme "10 causes for the possible end of the world" or some such title. 7 of your 13 were amongst them IIRC !!

Although as I said I am by nature a pessimist, I don't believe that any of the detailed 10 is likely to occur at least within the next 100 years – by which time it is highly unlikely that any of us here will still be alike & kicking !!

Except for your last listed one of course – hahaha !

I was looking forward to it and had been for years. (All together now: That figures.) Then it didn't happen. Not fair!

I've heard various reasons why things didn't exactly go as anticipated.

(1) Something did happen. We just don't know it yet. This goes along with recent invisible UFO sightings.

(2) An electronic pulse emanating from who-knows-where saved the planet. This is the Not Enough Tin Foil in Your Beanie theory.

(3) Everyone got it wrong; it's supposed to happen next year. This drags things out so more people can make a profit selling ridiculous end-of-the-world paraphernalia.

(4) The Mayans never existed. This illustrates classic denial.

Oh well...maybe next time...

EDIT...

Update: Now it's supposed to happen on Christmas Eve. Depending on where you live, that could be tomorrow.

Maybe they meant New Year's Eve.

Well it's Christmas Eve, and about 11:30 PM here in West Mifflin, nothing bad happened, the JA forum is stil up and running, we were watching TV all evening, all's well.

I'm not worried. Who's worried? Or is this supposed to be a joke? Or a ages-old hoax/supersition/legend, or what?

Either way, no worries, folks!

Instead, Merry Christmas!

I don't know how you people can remain so calm. According to my DayTimer the world ends on December 31st!
