The moment I saw Ray's post, titled as it was, I had a foreboding feeling about the likely subject. Randy finally lost what has been a long courageous and admirable fight. He really beat a lot of odds in living as long as he did.

I say this because, while I have always appreciated his major contribution to Adventure gaming in general and my interest in it in particular, it has always been his trying to 'win through and make the most of his life, in spite of the bad cards dealt him, that has caused me to admire him so much. It is people like this that inspire me to be especially appreciative as Thanksgiving approaches.

All the best to the family of this iconic and impressive man and I especially hope his son is doing well.

The future ain't what it used to be!

I was dreading this news for these last months, and now... I am just so deeply saddened by his death. I will miss him and am very glad I got the chance to know him over the years. He had his moments, but he had a very good soul and could be so amazingly sweet.

And he loved games and the people who made them with a fierce dedication. Rest well dear Randy.

I went to sleep crying last night. Today, I feel as though there's a hole in my insides.

Randy was like family to me. I'm here now, doing what I do only because of the opportunities he gave me. I treasure the years I worked for him. He was boss, teacher, mentor and friend.

I remain in awe of Randy's courage. He never backed down in the face of adversity.

When he got so sick the first time, he defied the odds, fought his way back and beat it.

He also fought for what he thought was right and stood against what he thought was wrong, sometimes quite vocally. He was a fierce advocate of the adventure genre; at times, the driving force that kept it alive. He had a wicked sense of humor that I truly loved.

The first time I laid eyes on the old JA site, I knew I wanted to become involved in any way I could. I've been here ever since.

Knowing this day would be coming hasn't taken the sting out of it. But Randy carried some heavy burdens in life and he's free now. If there's a heaven, you can bet he's there.

My heart goes out to Sandy, their kids and grandkids, and all who loved Randy. They are in my prayers.

Rest in peace, dear Randy. I'm very grateful to have known you. I will always miss you.

This is very sad news, though not entirely unexpected. I kept hoping Randy would somehow recover. He was a great guy and I'll miss his often hilarious reviews. No one else could have written a review that made me purchase a game like ***Bloodrayne***, and I bought ***Alpha Polaris*** in his honor, since it was the most recent review of Randy's that I could find. I'll be thinking of him when I play them -- especially Bloodrayne with all its "juggsashakin." I like to think Randy will be right there in spirit, watching me play it and laughing at the gyrations alongside me.

Just got home from work so I could post. Aya emailed me about the news. There are not enough words to express the loss of Randy Sluganski. Typing through tears.

I owe my love for Adventure Games and my career to him. I emailed the JA site asking a question. After a few emails he threw an opportunity my way. He had an idea, The JAVE, and although I'd never been a real webmaster and was just learning HTML, he gave me a chance to develop his ideas of a Just Adventure Game Encyclopedia. That's when I first "met" Randy online in 1998. And when his partnership broke up with the other JA webmaster, he gave me a chance to continue his ideas for JA and then JA+ as the webmistress. He even encouraged me to write a review or two. We shared ideas and he always listened when I gave my "2 cents".

I had the honor of meeting Randy in person at E3 in 2003. He was just as quirky and wonderful in person as online. I met Ray there as well. If I remember correctly, we all gathered at Ray's apartment. Randy took me around E3 "showing me the ropes". He was wonderful to watch in action with game producers and developers.

Even after I couldn't be the JA webmistress anymore, we kept in touch often until he became ill. He only emailed when he could after that, of course. He found me on Facebook so I could kind of see what was going on with him there. Then, more and more of nothing. I, like others, feared the worst.

Randy - thank you for all you did for me, for so many others, and for the Adventure Game genre. I've kept all the Christmas cards you sent over the years and all the games you gave me. I miss you.

Randy was unique – a one off – an inspiration to all of us lovers of Quest-Adventure computer games..

My first contacts with him were way before he inaugurated Just Adventure. I can't remember exactly, but I guess somewhere between 15 to 20 years ago. I had mutual email discussions with him during most of those years.  They were pretty well all concerning games and JA. But I cannot claim to have known him intimately as a pure human being like Ray, Karla, Val and I presume some others who not only admired him professionally but also as a loyal close personal friend – and who are naturally devastated !!!

Not *everybody* always agreed with *everything* Randy said, wrote or did. But I believe tat **EVERYBODY** agrees with the fact that he was a sincere & dedicated pioneer (well before it became more fashionable) and protagonist of the whole Adventure genre.

He was a tough & indomitable  fighter both for the welfare of computer games and also the terrible deal fate played him with his horrible illness and when he was young and eventually struck him down prematurely.

To ALL his actual family, sincere condolences and …………..

Hundreds of AdventureGame fans around the world met and shared their passion through JA+.

I've learnt a lot about AGs and made a lot of friends through Randy's creation, it wouldn't been possible without him.

Thanks for everything Randy... wherever you are right now...

Randy was a remarkable guy.  I've never known anyone remotely like him.  His fierce love of the adventure genre changed the industry.

I'm very lucky to have had Randy as a friend.  The times he came out to Hollywood and stayed with me for E3 week provided some of the most fun I've ever had.

I last saw him in Pittsburgh in the Spring of 2011, when he showed me his awe-inspiring adventure game collection!

I'm glad I knew him.

I'm sure you will join me in keeping his wife Sandy and his children in our thoughts.

Hi Ray ..........................

I think that you are *PASRTICULARLY* devastated by Randy's death since you were so close to him, not only by your contributing enormously to JA but also by being so personally close & friendly with him.

P.S.

I have known for many years that you live in LA  - whre I have visited several times since one off my daughters lives fairly close by in Irvine with her husband and family.

If you are ever in this part of the globe, please look us up ------------ Len.

Rest in Peace, Randy.  I'll miss those long conversations about games and the opportunities you gave me and many others to express ourselves here on Just Adventure.  You were one of a kind and never pulled punches. I always respected you for that.   I knew you would never sugar-coat anything whenever I wanted a honest opinion and I knew your words were always straight from the heart.  End of an era...

So very very sorry to hear of Randy's death - can't believe it.  Frankly, to me Randy was the site (if you know what I maan) and certainly one of the reasons that  at one time it seemed like a "home away from home" to me.

Rest in Peace Randy.

I'm very sorry to hear about Randy. I haven't been back here in a long time but I have some great memories of this place and I made a lot of friends here. Also, it kept my love for adventure games going at a time when the genre was in trouble and that's all thanks to Randy. My deepest condolences to his family.

god speed, randy...

i heard the sad news via caroline on facebook.
JA was also my first gaming forum, back in the 'golden years'. i got to know randy pretty well during the days of jousting with betje

randy even graced me with several phone calls regarding the situation... i'll never forget his quirky voice and what seemed to be a jersey accent... he even banned me for a while but i sweet talked my way back in... heh heh... he was really a softee

thanks, randy, for all you have done for us!

p.s. a big hello to all of my old friends

still gaming...
