Topic: Chris Robersts (Wing commander dev) unviels new space sim (Must see)
This was unvielded today at GDC and they launched their site but it already got overloaded and went down, so now there's a backup for it while they are working on it.
Imagine a Wing commander game, mixed with Freelancer, complete with both online/single player (and offline co op as well).
The graphics look amazing, they have already put a lot of work in it it seems. That cockpit view...I've always wanted that kind of view in space (flying games in general). The way you see your pilots hands/feet all move and push what button you press, use the joystick and other things, looks awesome.
A list of more info:
Details: CryEngine 3 Singleplayer, Offline Co-Op, Online Modes (Akin to 'Demon's Souls') Connect with a huge community online and on the web, sounds kinda similar to an MMO User-generated content is a key feature Due out at some point in 2014, Alpha Testing next year Mash up of Freelancer, Privateer and Wing Commander Political drama inspired by the decline and fall of the Roman Empire Your goal is to get into Squadron 42, kind of like Space Foreign Legion Encourages random exploration of the universe, huge uncharted sections for the taking Seems to be Buy to Play, ala Guild Wars 2, once you buy the game, you can play for free online forever.
Can I have a medium-sized ship with a single launchable fighter aboard? Yes. Can I get out of my ship and shoot people in first- or third-person combat? Yes. Can I hijack an enemy ship? Yes. Can other players hijack my ship? Yes. Will there be location-specific damage on spaceships? Yes. Will there be customizable weapons on hardpoints? Yes. Can I play with a mouse? Yes. A gamepad? Yes. A joystick? Yes. Will it support Oculus Rift? Yes. Will it take user-created content (ships, etc) and sell it, splitting revenue with creators? Yes.
I've thrown in at the 30$ tier but thinking about upping it later on when I have more money to spare.

*gasp* i'm not a fan of the space sim genre, just because there's too much boring crap outthere imho like EVE, X-series, ...
Space usually turns out to be a big empty space, with loooong travelling times and nothing interesting to find when you randomly explore.
There're only 2 games that don't follow the above, Freelancer and Wing Commander... sooooo oh my gosh, this certainly looks very promising. So i'll gladly invest in this project

This does look quite promising. I've overspent on games again, so I won't pre-order it, but if it turns out to be good, I'll buy it post-release.

If you like Wing Commander, then you'll probably like the Conflict: Freespace series. They are story driven and have tight & rather action-packed missions, much like the WC series.
And don't forget the excellent (and underrated) "Starlancer", also designed by Chris Roberts. Everyone has heard of "Freelancer", which was an Elite-like sequel to "Starlancer" set in the universe of the original game (and also using the same engine) but strangely, no one seems to remember "Starlancer"! It's a pity because it was a worthy successor to the "Wing Commander" games, with great graphics (the rotating planets looked particularly impressive), excellent mission design with a large variety in objectives, interesting plot and a dynamic campaign that would change according to the results of every mission.

or sim as in like mostly combat like Ace combat, or Star Wars Rogue Squadron?
They are closer to Rogue Squadron, though Rogue Squadron is usually considered to be more of an action game.
Space sims is a rather wide genre though, ranging from the quite arcadey Wing Commander series (that is worth playing for the FMV sequences alone (WC was one of the few game series where they actually hired good actors for the live action scenes, and it really shows)), where you just fly around and shoot things
to the more complex Independence War series, which simulates real physics:
to the almost overly complex Battlecruiser series, where you have to manage basically everything on a huge battlecruiser (and later games even lets you land on planets and walk around on foot. These games were incredibly ambitious, but sadly almost unplayable due to all their bugs)
And then there are the oddball trading sims combined with space simulators, like the X-series, Elite, Wing Commander: Privateer and a few others. These tend to be very time consuming, but I find them to be quite rewarding as well (though I've never actually beaten the main campaign in one).
They have now launched the official Kickstarter of the project. Sinc etheir main site has had problems and some people just simply trust/know kickstarter better they are opening it up there as well.
They have already hit 66k within the day of opening it. The official RSI site has already amassed 1million of the 2million goal. I think it's safe to say the game will be funded
.
Also if you already pledged on the RSI site, the kickstarter has a very small $5 pledge tier that gives you a new ship hull skin for people that back at both sites.
ON top of this, if you wnat ot upgrade your pledge it will be a few mor edays before you can (Ie say you pledged 30, but decided you want the 60$ tier).
