I recorded the opening ceremony 27-7-12.

I have so far only watched the fairly long 'entertainment' opening - not yet the march past of the athlete's teams.

What did you think of it?

Did you enjoy it ?

My eyes are bad but it seemed to me that at least the first half of the 'entertainment' was devoted to the general theme of the industrial revolution.

Is that correct ?
Do you have any opinions as to why. ?

I think I have – but I'd rather read what (if anything) others think !!!

I would agree that the later part of the first entertainment was devoted to the theme of the industrial revolution but this followed what preceded a more rural life of farming, dancing around the maypole etc in Englands 'green & pleasant land'. This was followed by a medley of British music. I think the idea was to give a snapshot of where Britain came from & how the country progressed. I thought the show was spectacular! but perhaps focused too long on aspects for the sake of the production rather than including so much more on a wider range of what Britain was & is about!

NB what's the point of having the facility to enlarge the font size if it doesn't work?

loobiloo,

check your coding.  to start and to finish.  Without that final slash, no codes will work.  Also, Len now has his own program that enlarges text which is why no one else does so.

I agree with you loobiloo !

I recorded the whole event – (the entertainment part lasted about one & a half hours) and thought it was pretty chaotic !!!

But then I watched it through & through again from beginning to the end

It showed the "Green and pleasant" rural land of Britain probably around the 18th century being replaced by the Satanic Mills of the British industrial revolution with the enormous migration of poor folk from the villages of the countryside to the smoking chimneys of the large towns.

It was due to the brilliance of British scientists and inventors in the early 19th century which made Britain the first country in the world to be heavily industrialized.
This caused incredible hardships and poverty to many people and children and great wealth to others – and fruitless attempts to resist the inevitable changes !!
On the other hand it was the birth of the British Empire which at one stage ruled & governed about one sixth of the whole world.

This period of British colonialism lasted roughly from 1815 to 1914.
It managed to stumble on, near bankrupt, until the cost of WW-II finished it off completely and Britain was forced to free its colonies, Dependencies, Mandated Territories, etc and ceased to be the main world power – or really ANY serious power

  for better or for worse.

Of course after this at the opening Olympics came multicultural UK (with some rather contradictory aspects) and modern Great Britain & London.

On the whole, on second viewing, IMHO it was a **VERY  WORTHY** body of work, something to be remembered, and AFAIK VERY different from previous Olympic openings – and quite a unique performance IMO   !

I saw only part of the opening ceremony, because I was busy watching a tv-episode of Midsummer Murders on another channel.
But what I saw intrigued me and made me very, very happy. I as especially gald to see Tim Berners-Lee, the man behind the world wide web be honored. I thought the idea with the young people as a group lightning the olympic flame was a very nice touch. The torch passed literally the young generation....

As for the Olympics themselves, Danes have won a silver medal (in skeet) and a bronze medal (in rowing, 4man lightsculler). However, it looks like everyone has great fun in London
