Heya, just getting back into adventure gaming lately, was a fan of many in the 90s.

Any recommendations for point-and-click adventure games from the past decade or so? Particularly, I like anything that's a little "adult", though family friendly can be cool, I like humor but serious is fine too as long as it's stylized and cool. Say, something like Full Throttle, Tex Murphy, Runaway, Space Quest, or maybe something darker, anything really. Preferably with an adult lead character and an interesting story or cool stylish atmosphere.

Commercial games, free fan games with high production values, anything there. I'd also be curious about any first-person games I might dig, though I'm not usually a fan of those.

Also, what are some good sites to look at for finding more adventure games to dig? Any site that ranks them by votes or user ratings, like IMDb?

Recommendations? Thanks.

As far as buying them goes, www.gog.com is one of thebest for older adventure games apart from ones you can find on justadventure's own store.

In the past decade hmm..

Have you played either the Syberia or The longest Journey series? Those are considered late classics (late 90's/early 2000's era).I loved Syberia more, but both are excellent adventure games that are more serious/adult themed.

As far as more recent games go, I really enjoyed The Whispered World, it's humorous and very cartoony similar to older games from the lucasarts era.You can try a demo of it here:

http://www.fileplanet.com/211256/210000/fileinfo/The-Whispered-World-Demo

There's also Gray Matter, which is an adventure game from Jane Jenson (Who made the famous Gabriel Knight series). She also just recently had a successful kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1005365109/jane-jensens-pinkerton-road-2012-2013-csg?ref=users) and is working on a new adventure game called Moebius (which will be more like GK) and another project on the side (a possible new GK game). Gray Matter is  a good game if you enjoyed Gabriel Knight you should give it a try.

Still Life is good for a Murder/mystery game if you enjoy those. It's a psuedo sequel to Post Mortem (but you don't need to have played it).

As far as "creepy" goes, if you haven't then Sanitarium is a MUST play, it's one of the creepiest adventure games of all time, very surreal and a great atmosphere. You can find it on gog.

Also you might be interested in the TellTale games, they are the biggest "new" adventure powerhouse out there, they have some good adventure series you might enjoy, many of them stylized.

I would recommend you look at their Sam and Max series, Tales of Monkey island (both new ones based around the clasasic series) as well as their BAck to the future and more recently The Walking Dead. If you enjoy The Walking dead tv show or novel I'd highly recommend it, the first episode was great. You can find their games here: http://www.telltalegames.com/ or on serices like Steam.

Also you might be happy to know that the Tex Murphy guys also had a recent successful kickstarter and are working on a new Tex Murphy game too: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/texmurphy/tex-murphy-project-fedora?ref=users

As well as the Two Guys from Andromeda (who made space quest games) :

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spaceventure/two-guys-spaceventure-by-the-creators-of-space-que?ref=users

Also another thing to point out that you may not have known is that the classic Moneky Island series had it's first two games redone in HD (with new voicework/graphics) that you might like to pick up if you enjoyed that series in the past, can find them on steam and other services.

Hmm...

On the commercial side, I might add The Lost Crown: A Ghost-hunting Adventure and some of the Sherlock Holmes games by Frogwares (I say some out of caution: I've only played two myself, those being Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened (which involves the Cthulhu Mythos) and Sherlock Holmes vs. Jack the Ripper).

On the freeware side, I recommend looking at the Adventure Game Studio game database, if you don't mind pixel-art.  (If you want to see the games from the most recent first, I believe that you can do so by going to the "A-Z list" (on the right-hand side), and there clicking on the heading that reads "Released".)  In particular, I'm inclined to recommend:

  • Eternally Us - Very short, but touching.
  • ^_^ (Yes, that's its name
) - Very, very short, but amusing.
  • ~airwave~ - I Fought the Law, and the Law One - An interesting start to the story - hopefully we'll get the continuation at some stage! ^^;
  • A Tale of Two Kingdoms - Decently long, interestingly plotted and somewhat unusual in subject matter (something similar to and based on Celtic mythology, I believe), and features multiple solutions to certain puzzles as well as multiple endings.
  • Nelly Cootalot: Spoonbeaks Ahoy! - A fun, cute, piratey game.
  • Spooks - Strange and wonderful.
  • Shifter's Box - Outside In - A fun, slightly strange little game.
  • Heed - Something perhaps a little more philosophical.
  • And finally, to whet your appetite, a demo: that of Wretcher, a rather promising-looking horror game.

If you don't mind less impressive art, you might also look up:

Finally, I very much recommend The Marionette, a lovely freeware horror game.

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

*ahem*

Sorry.

The Marionette does look good, I just played The White Chamber, another cool horror one.

It does seem the adventure genre tends to either be very serious and often say horror/murder, or very lighthearted and wacky. It'd be fun to see those two mix together more, kinda like say Quest for Glory IV. I especially like it when the tone varies, or when things are a bit stylized or the protagonist is a bit unusual, etc.

Thanks for all the recommendations, plenty of good looking games to check out. And always looking for more.

You'd probably like the newly released Yesterday, from the same developers as Runaway. It's very wacky and out there but also quite dark at times. But I'm like you, I wish there were more games like QFGIV too. Far too many silly games and dull, traditional games with not much in between.
