This game looks very interesting. The blurbs say it is played from the 1st and 3rd person perspective. Does anyone know if it's possible to play entirely from the 1st?

Hmm...  It has been a long time since last I played it, but I don't think so: I seem to recall 3rd-person one-on-one fights (in the vein of Street Fighter, albeit easier, I think; they may have been avoidable, but I'm not sure that all were), and I'm not sure that exploration wasn't locked into the 3rd person.

In all fairness, you may find the third-person camera to be rather better if you play the game: I seem to recall thinking that the first-person controls (especially, if I recall correctly, for the shooting sections) weren't wonderful, although I fear that my memory is vague on the matter.

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

*ahem*

Sorry.

Tincup, it's kind of classic over-the-shoulder hybrid first person, and believe me, this is how you WANT to play it, because you aren't always inhabiting the same body.

And RUN, don't walk, to this game.  It's extremely interesting.  Groundbreaking.  One of my all-time favorites.

Remember, procrastinate now.  Don't put it off!!

This is on my list of "never finished" games but is still in the top of the list. I had difficulties with the fighting scenes and gave up but that was years ago. Very interesting everything about this game. My being a David Bowie fan didn't hurt.

I will have to load it up and see how I fare this go 'round.

We can be heroes, just for one day.

I haven't played my copy of this game.  I loaded it, couldn't figure out what to do, then bought a new pc.  I shall see if it plays on XP.

@ Caroline - I ran into trouble trying to run it under XP. The game would boot, menus fine, but at the start of the game there was serious graphi distortion and which not locked up, barely moved. I tried some of the work around I found on the web, but ended up installing it on  a retro Voodoo 5 rig where it ran smoothly. Probably graphic card driver issues so maybe you'll have better luck...

My version is called The Nomad Soul - it came from UK and I was told the game is Omikron under a different name.  It installed fine and I clicked yes to QuickTime 6 but it won't play.  The error message says RUNTIME.ICD has encountered serious problem.

Any suggestions?

If you haven't already, try Win98 compatibility mode, 256 color mode may help, and I've read that people have success by deleting the movie files in the FLIS subfolder and substituting empty 'dummy' files with the same names [use notpad].

But I got frustrated too and installed in on an W98 retro box with no problem...

Good luck!

USB mice sometimes work with W98 - hit or miss but worth a try.

it is am amazing game, i posted a while ago a bunch of pictures, i did a six month play thru of the entire game and loved it, it remains a very unusual and remarkable game and really worth the effort. there are a few tricks to get it to run on XP (including being sure you Do NOT have a joy stick plugged in

but it runs very well and has awesome sound and tons of great action, locations and much much more. A very ususual and artist game, it remains one of the all time classics.

It has everything, adventure, exploring, puzzles, trials, FPS fighitng, long dialogues and great back story, flying ships, slider air cars, elevators, high tech, low tech, mystcial worlds, strange creatures, over 200 individual NPCs and story characters, live in appartments, food you can eat, restaurants you can order in, stores you can buy food, and drugs and other supplies, a gripping overall story with lots of action and suspense, it is literally an all encompasing genre game, and has amazing sound and music written by a famous musician, and is directed by one of the realy good game directors....sadly it came out just before XP so it is a thresdhold game and did not get the publicity it might have, it is also radical in art, having a unique art style that is not photorealistic and therefore not familar to the TV generation that often lacks imagination when things are not easily absorbed..once you get used to the style, it is quite beauitful.

you transmigrate "souls" so you actually play as over 30 differnt people in the game so you see all sorts of life styles, and levels of society, and there are mods that will allow you to replay as any of those character you may want. That mod is included in my patch set.

The in game characters have great dialoge and a fluid modeling that gives them experessions and real life like features.

You may need the manual to know  what to do, and i have created a just about fool proof patch to run the game on XP but you will have to own the authentic game and have a dsik from the game in the computer to play

A vast intricate undergrond city...

on the way to a Prision located in a Winter world...

here are some pics....a not to be missed game...

and no you dont need an older mouse  my laser mouse worked just fine.  you just have to set the graphics for what works best for you there are a lot of controls to set

and you will probably have to use the three dummy intro movies that i included in the patch pack.

Part of this game relies on you having cash in your pocket to pay for various things, a good and way to get it is to search in the ground floor entrances of the appartment buildings in the first city for items you can sell or cash laying around.

Also when you get your first appartment looks for the training room ..it has a bot that trains you in fighting, it is very useful to increase your fighting skills for you will have to engage enemies at times and you will be more successful when you are higher up.

Also look in the cupboard for items that you can use including pet food for you have a pet lizard in its cage that you need to feed to get an important clue

You travel fast around the first city by using the ground cars called Sliders, you call them using the control unit on your wrist and when they come one will stop near you on the street and traffic will back up after it. walk up to it and hit the Use key and the car will open and you will get in, then you need to pick a desitnation again on your control unit. In other worlds you will have to walk.

To save a game you need one of the Rings, they will be laying around or be obtained in various ways, you need to look for the floating ring symbol to find a save locatoina nd then you can save the game. It is a bit tricky at times, this game but it is fun.

this site has some fun mods, translated versions of the manual and other help:

http://omikrongame.blogspot.com/2003/11/files.html

this site is quite interestng as it is the last remains of the offcial development postings, and contains a detailed log of the development of the game with notes, interviews and some very interestig background.

here is a good walk thru, i needed it

OK, it should work fine, if you have an older system, like Win98, it will love that and may not even need the patch...and it may infact fun the three short infro vids one of which is a funny cola ad from the game world.

Yes it does run nicely on my W98se/Voodoo5/P1.4 Tualatin rig. But I also like to test patched/upgraded oldies on my current box - Deus Ex, Thief, Quake etc., have great fan mods/patches of which you are a contributor
