Hey!
I was wondering if you could help me by suggesting excellent story based adventure games.
culpa innata, the lost crown , the longest journey, gabriel knight, still life. are some of my favourites!
I enjoy the puzzles but games like safecracker are just boring puzzle work to me. I need a story that captures you from beginning to end!
any suggestions?
I too much prefer 'story based' Quest/Adventures. I quite like puzzles mixed in but personally I prefer them subsidiary to a thumping good narrative. Howevever there are hundreds of good story based games and it would be helpful to greatly limit the field ! Just a teeny weeny taster – a huge number just as good, if not better (excluding the ones you have already mentioned) !!! --------------
***REAL OLDIES*** **** "Indiana Jones an the Fate of Atlantis" (maybe the best story driven+ puzzle game EVER ??? **** Original "Monkey Island" games.
***OLDIES*** **** The last 3 "Tex Murphy" games. **** The first "Broken Sword" game.
***NOT RECENT*** **** Two "Syberia(s)" **** The "Secret Files" games
***FAIRLY RECENT*** **** "Lost Horizon" **** "A New Beginning"
AND OF COURSE THER ARE DOZENS AND DOZENS & DOZENS MORE !!

On the more arguable side, and if you don't mind going into games that are rather old and rather weird, I have a great fondness for The Vortex: Quantum Gate II, or, slightly less so on both counts (I think), Sanitarium.
If you don't mind a slightly lonely story, then I might add Keepsake and the later Myst games.
MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
*ahem*
Sorry.

Cthulu loves me, this I know&&The Necronomicon tells me so

You can find it digitally here: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/sanitarium
It has a great atmosphere, storyline, and will leave a lasting impression with you. One of those kinds of adventure games you'll remember 10 years down the road like other greats.

Basically love all the games mentioned so far. I'll add The Black Dahlia, which has a large-scale, gripping story (until the very end when it goes off the rails a bit).

I'll second this. If I had to pick "best story ever" in a game, this would have to be in my final list to choose from.
