Since the recent changes it's become really difficult to get images to display as such as easily as they used to. What should I be doing?
There are two ways of doing it. Either click on the "insert image" button and paste the image URL into it, or just edit your post, and the things inside the img tags will show. While this system is a bit clumsy when you just want to insert an image, it does make it a lot easier to place images in specific spots in the post.

Edit:
Fnord posted his answer while I was still composing mine, and he's a lot more succinct.
To be honest, Caroline, I don't know what you should be doing. Unfortunately, there is no manual or set of instructions for the forum software JA is using. None I know of, at any rate...
Some things -- and this is one of 'em -- are just trial-and-error for me. Or, as I like to call it, the "skidding-around-on-the-seat-of-one's-pants" learning method.
I usually just try stuff until: (1) something works; (2) I wreck everything, competely embarrassing myself in the process; and/or (3) I give up. In this case, I truly don't remember what worked. I'm just glad something did...
However, there appears to be more than one way to do this particular thing. I know the following is not what I did the first time, but it worked for me just now. It's a lot simpler, too.
Then I pulled up a Reply to Topic screen, clicked Insert/edit image (tree icon), pasted the avatar's URL in the Image URL field, and clicked Insert. This placed the avatar in my reply, as below. (That thing really is strange...)
This should have also worked had I done it when I edited your post earlier. It should work for everyone, in fact -- but I'm not guaranteeing anything.
For some reason, this kind of issue inspires a visual of Dr. Strangelove's out-of-control, gloved hand trying to strangle him...

Indeed!
And that Star Wars dance game looks rather entertaining.

Speaking of a horrible pop song, I think I'd rather be possessed than have to listen to this one...
Even with that video, the song remains unlistenable.

Meanwhile, in a galaxy far, far away:
1.What do you suppose the music/song the bands are currently playing?
2.We now need the other Star Trek series bands to play along with the Star Wars episode 1-3 band as well! It would be the ultimate movie nerd battle of the bands compitition of the universe! Unless the Lord of the Rings band showed up.

I'm thinking is should be her hair.
That works even better! Although as far as I'm concerned, anyone's hair but mine will do.
The first time I had the misfortune of hearing that dreadful song, I thought she was saying, "I wear my hair back-and-forth." Er, what? How does one do that?
For no particular reason, this brings to mind part of an ancient song by Bo Diddley called, "Hey, Man." It consists of two guys talking to each other. The part I'm thinking of goes...
Well, I was walking down the street with your girl the other day.
Uh-huh.
And the wind was blowin' real hard.
Is that right?
And the wind blew her hair into my face.
Uh-huh.
Hee-hee, you know what else happened?
What happened?
The wind blew her hair into her face.
Yeah?
And we went a little further; you wanna hear the rest of it?
I might as well ....
The wind blew her hair into the street!

[size= small]Why does that [size=x-small] thing pop up alla time? Did I not close a statement or something? I miss HTML or at least BBC (code).
[size= small]I'm of the prehistoric generation of "coding" - not the "We can't doing anything without a GUI!" tribespeople.
[size= small]Please help me easily use no Graphical User Interface buttons to espress my stinky opinions. Let me encode it out, like we had to do before the cute picture buttons.
