Ah, many thanks. I did have to change settings to show hidden files. With that accomplished I saved the game just after using the item in question. For convenience I moved the file to the desktop and proceeded to upload it to my hosting site.

In my case at least I was able to download the file and add it to the Savegames folder where it was then recognized as a valid save.

Status : Offline | Hi CB, I downloaded your savegame but wasn't able to use it.
First I renamed it to savegame16.dat, which is the latest savegame I produced myself.
I then replaced my own savegame16.dat by yours and started the game. Unfortunately, the game refuses to recognize this as a valid savegame. The behaviour is equal to an earlier savegame I received from someone of the gameboomers forum.
I also noticed that your savegame is considerably larger than the ones I have... about 1.5MB against 1.1MB.
I suspect this has to do with a different game version, but I can't be sure.
I had a look at the developers' website, and they are already aware of the problem.
See: http://forum.daedalic.de/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=1297
The problem seems related with the JA download version. No solution yet.

So what you need to do is turn off Norton, Get the installer (which is digitally signed btw) and then with Norton off wun it as an admin and install. Then follow the steps from the link below to exclude it from Norton.

That should set you straight.

Tried in windowed too...also no joy.
If the F8 is volume then you probably also have an "fn" key on your laptop. That's a function key if you press it then press f8 at the same time it'll make f8 behave as f8 not the volume.

It is by no means that my intention is to rub salt inappropriately but I personally chose the disc version seeing that it was MUCH cheaper and also included various bonus items and no DRiM.

For clarification F8 brings up the options menu. The Fn key is usually adjacent left of the Windows logo aka Start key.

I paid less than 12 dollar for two games (A New Beginning and The Wispered World). I'm sure buying both in boxed format would cost me a lot more.
Anyway, I can't imagine JA selling these games as a download without the developer knowing about it. There is a bug in some version of a game. The developer should be able to trace and fix that bug, shouldn't they?

After more hassle than I should have brought upon myself I found the folder where my saves reside ! I would never have guesed that it was a sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-sub-folder (directory) of 'Documents and Settings; - WHY there, Goodness knows.
I have copied my first saves from chapter 3 into there - both before and after the bug which for whatever reason did not affect me !!! Maybe because I'm still on XP, or I got an earlier version , or who knows what.
These saves all seem to work 100% - don't ask me WHY !
I'm now just going to check that the before & after the bug savegames are all working 100% correctly and if so will email them to JA-Support.
I have a job to do first but hope to get the 2 saves to Support in about an hour from now.
I have doubts whether the "After" save will work for people who are stuck there.
BUT IT's worth a try.
If it DOES work however it will at least be a temporary solution until Daedalic uploads a corrective patch !!!!!
Keeping my fingers crossed !

I have 3 long days at work now so won't get much chance to play but will keep an eye on the forum.
I'm very impressed that everyone is putting in so much effort just so we can play a game!
Thanks all and fingers crossed

Status : Offline | Ok guys let me just give you a quick update. We have been in constant contact with Dadelic about this issue and are both working to resolve it quickly. They are examining the bug on their end trying to reproduce the issue so that they can get it resolved. In the meantime I do think that trying len Green's after saved game is worth a shot he has the ESD version which could be why CB's version didn't take. If anyone has a saved game where the bug persists, would you please shoot me a PM or an email so I can arrange to get that file from you. If you'd like Len's Save please also just shoot me a PM or an email via Support@JustAdventure.com
(A HUGE THANKS TO YOU LEN BTW)

Status : Offline | Hi folk, One thing that I'm almost certain is that the game *WAS* running smoothly and without any bugs or quirks. Walkthrough writers including myself encountered no bugs or other probs. Also I don't remember seeing any complaints on the various Forums. I repeat that on the whole IMHO it is a VERY good game and a bargain *ALONE* at US$9.99 to say nothing of the additional good game "Whispered Word". Something must have happened on the way to the Forum which introduced this strange bug -what, I haven't the slightest idea ! I have no idea whether the two saves (plus two bookmarks) that I have isolated will solve the problem for anybody - or whether they will be as useless as some others which kind people have sent around. The only way to find out is to try since it won't take long, and maybe it will solve the problem temporarily for some players until the basic solution is found. ) If anybody wishes to try out, here are some simple instructions:- (1) Firstly I have to get the zipped files to you. The zip contains :- savegame 01.dat, savegame 02.dat, bookmark 01.dat, bookmark 02.dat. (2) In order to receive these I shall have to send you the zipped files by email since AFAIK PM's do not carry attachments. In order to do this you will have to send me an email to my non-personal address as follows: lengreen@hotmail.com which will give me your email address (if you don't object). Since I get tons of junk mail which I delete often without examining carefully, please entitle your email ANB so that I can make sure not to delete it. )) If I receive any "takers" I shall post here some brief simple instructions as to how to proceed further ATB ------- Len

Earlier today I received your package (via JA support). I did what I did before with the other savegames, but unfortunately the effect was the same: I was unable to load them.
I am really sorry to say this, as you have done a lot of effort to help.
Let's wait for what JA together with Daedelic support can do to fix or otherwise circumvent this problem.

I was afraid that that would be the situation - but IMO, it was worth a try;
BTW - Is your os windows 7 or XP ?
I wonder whether the bug exists also on XP ? And if it does, whether those saves will help ?
I presume that you and most players are only using Windows 7 ???

I doubt it , but just on the offchance :-
(1) Delete ALL the files in your savegames folder (leaving it completely empty)
N.B. - Copy them first into a new backup folder if you wish !
(2) Unzip (unrar) the 4 files into your savegames folder,
Keep your fingers crossed and try the game again !

any thanks CB.
I hold out very little hopes - the bug seems to be absolutelt specific to one particular version only.
Futhermore, it appears that saves from any one version are unfortunately not compatible with other versions !!
However, if ANYBODY succeeds in bypassing the bug with ;my' saves, PLEASE BROADCAST IT HERE !
It will give others the incentive to try !!

I noticed the save files are larger than I expected. Just for laughs I'll see if they work on the disc version.

I did what you suggested... emptied my savegame folder and moved your set of 4 files into it.
Again, no success. Neither "load game" nor "continue game" do anything.
I have Windows 7 64-bit.
As far as I know (for what it's worth), all people experiencing this problem have Win7 and use the download version of the game.

Sadly , it is what I expected
To get a definitive picture- has anybody tried using the'instructions' using WINDOWSXP ??
If THAT also doesn't work, it would appear that the bug exists ONLY in the once specific case - that distributed by JA in conjunction with Daedalic for download
