Hi Guys,

There is an apparent bug in A New Beginning, at the beginning of chapter three when you pull down the curtain rod and try to use it. This same thing happens on the original source of the game, so it would seem to be a game bug. We are in contact with Daedalic and are working very hard to resolve this as quickly as possible. I will update this forum post as I know more. In the meantime, to help us collect stats and data, if you're having this problem would you just chime in here and let us know? Thanks so much and I hope you're all having a great day.

Ah darn it, I just started playing that game

I guess I'll put it on hold until the problem is solved.

You can keep playing, but when you get to chapter 3 your going to have to just save your saved game. Then you can easily pick up where you left off

Tht's funny.

I played the game from beginning to end and didn't get stuck or stopped on that bug. In fact I didn't know it existed until now !

It is a very good and lengthy game.

It contains a lot of 'extensive' puzzles.  By that I don't mean that those puzzles are necessarily terribly difficult !

Simply, as opposed to many puzzles you have to go 'on & on & on' to complete them - and only then when you have completed EVERY ONE of a large number of tasks have you cracked the puzzle.

Due to the above I have posted here on JA an exceedingly comprehensive walkthrough of over a dozen of the lengthiest puzzles.

******    (1) My OS is Windows XP (still) !

******    (2) When I write a walkthru' I make scores of saves for checking & reference.  In fact I often make one before &/or after every step forward.

Since most games have a limited number of save slots I fill them ALL, save the batch and start a 2nd (or 3rd etc,) batch

In the case of "A new Beginning" I'm 90% certain  that I have AT LEAST one batch of 46 saves and I would GUESS that I have another of similar size (and possibly a third ??)

If they are of any help to you I can search for them (bit of a hassle but I hope not 'serious' and email them to you !

Cheers ----- Len Green

Len if you could send me right before the chapter three scene with the shower curtain you would in all actuality be a life saver.

I'd definately owe you a favor.

Don't worry about the favour ! You (and the mods) do us ALL favours all the time.

It's a pleasure & privilege to reciprocate a bit !

I shall have to reinstall the game and then search for the appropriate save(s) which will take a bit of time.

It is midnight Thursday/Friday here so I won't start it tonight  - we are 10 hours ahead of USA East Coast (got a daaughter living in California) and 7 hours ahead of USA West coast (got a granddaughter living in New Jersey.

I'll try to do it tomorrow (Friday) but I have a dental apointment in the morning and we do all our shopping on Fridays since everything closes on Saturdays.

If the worst comes to the worst will this coming Saturday (May 5th) be OK ?

Haifa - Israel ----- 4th May 2012 ----- 23:40

I think that I have located the appropriate save games.
It seems that I must have saved a large number of saves for each individual chapter of the game - I think there were 8.
It so happens that it seems that I combined chapters 3 & 4 together - I presume that there a relatively small number of saves for each of these particular chapters.
Total number of saves for the 2 chapters combined is 42.
If I zip these, it comes to about 10 megabytes which is too large to send you by email.  So I'll take pot luck and zip the first 20 files and hope that these cover the area in which the bug takes place.  If not I can have another go.

I have re-installed the game but haven't yet found where to insert these saves.
If however you can find the appropriate "before & after" the bug by yourselves, I can take my time.  If not I can insert all the saves and extract just the two that you really need.

I am getting this off immediately since you might have need of these saves ASAP.

Hoping this provides a temporary solution until Daedelic makes a patch or otherwise obviates the bug.

Cheers .......... Len Green

SATURDAY MORNING ----

^^^Support***Glad to receive your email that you received the savegames and hope they will be at least temporary solutions to the game-stopper bug.

I'm going to try to insert them into my game and get a clearer picture of the situation.

Sorry, I don't recall encountering this bug. What exactly happens? Does the game freeze up with an accompanying type of error message?

I hit this very bug. It is not a freeze, but the game doesn't allow me to "use" the curtain rod on something else.

Earlier today I received a savegame from someone else, but the game refuses to recognize it. It may have to do with a different patch level of the game.

Either a patch that solves this problem, or a usable savegame right after the curtain rod sequence would be great !! Right now I am stuck at this spot.

Thanks!

It's terribly late here in Israel (we are 1 hour ahead of Europe (2 hours ahjead of UK)

If you can reply HERE **ASAP** with the EXACT address (i.e. folder) where the sacvegames of "ANB" are 'stored' I can rake out the appropriate save and get it to you !

I assume then that the game icon doesn't turn into the rod to interact on something else. OK, press F8 - click full screen - click resume game. Still not working? Re-start and re-try in windowed mode.

Are you using the Lace Mamba disc version or a digital download??

Download - but a close friend has the disk version I think and I can use it if necessary.

ARE  THE  2  VERSIONS  DIFFERENT ?

In particular, is the folder location ("address") different in the 2 cases .

N.B. I didn't know there WERE TWO versions !!!

Plese reply HERE with the folder address - or 2 addresses if they are different so that I can check & send the correct savegame AASAP

Thanks in Advance !

I have a more basic problem: I can't play the game at all because my computer won't allow anb.exe to be downloaded. The printout below is the reason that Norton won't allow it to be downloaded (very few users, less than 5). I tried turning Norton off and downloading it, but I got a similar error message from some basic Windows protection. In any case, after four tries, I still have not found a way to download it. Any suggestions?

Well, this might not be very helpful but with Win 7 the disc version loads by default to c:\program files (x86)\Lace Mamba Global\ANB.exe. I'm not exactly sure regarding previous versions of Windows such as XP, but with Vista and Win 7 program files (x86) is the correct directory for installing 32 bit programs like ANB. As for the save files, they seem to be cleverly hidden as they are not in the usual places I would expect to find them. If only I knew the file extension...

The only differences between disc and download versions that I can fathom would be the methods of DRM employed on downloadable versions by their distribution sources. Scary.

Well, here are all details.

I use the digital download version. Came as part of an offer from justadventure, together with The Wispered World.

I run the game on Windows 7. The path for savegames is:

C:\Users\computer's name\AppData\Local\Daedalic Entertainment\A New Beginning\Savegames

(NB On older Windows versions it may also be:

C:\Documents and Settings\computer's name\Local Settings\Application Data\Daedalic Entertainment\A New Beginning\Savegames)

Indeed, the icon doesn't change when I hit "Use" on the rod. Switching between full-screen and windowed mode doesn't help.

Sounds like a false positive. Temporarilly disable your virus scanner while downloading & installing the game. You might also have to manually set the game exe as an exception for your virus scanner, so that it does not re-detect it.

Hi I have the same problem as genf. We were kindly sent a savegame from somone on Gameboomers but neither of us could get it to work. Tried the f8 thing but that is volume down on my laptop so that didn't work either.

Tried in windowed too...also no joy.

Until a week or so ago I thought that the game "A new beginning" was straightforward and without troubles, bugs, or problems.

It seems as though I was very wrong.

I still have not sorted things out properly to my satisfaction.

My computer is NOT Windows 7 but XP.  When I played the game several months ago I made and retain approx. 300 saves -  an average of 37 for each of the separate 8 chapters.

This includes approx. 20 for chapter 3.

When I played the game I encountered no bugs whatsoever and certainly not the GAME-STOPPER and hence finished the game to the very end.

Now that I want to insert a save game before and after the 'curtain rod' bug, I can't find ANY folder which simply contains the relevant save games in order to insert them.

I can't undertstand it since I presume that I must have accessed that folder whilst playing in order to store all those above-mentioned save games.  Furthermore when I play the game now, I can save additional files - but can't find where they are stored - but they must be somewhere since I can load them.

They may be in the registry - where very occasionally save games of some games are stored.  But this negates everything I have mentioned above since I never access the registry for fear of upsetting my OS.

Possibly the bug only appears in ths disc version???

None of your kind suggestions for the save game folder exist on my computer - they may only apply to Windows 7.  - One way and another I am in a complete quandary at the moment BUT I AM WORKING ON IT and if and when I get any breakthrough I'll immediately post here with full explanation.

P.S. I have used the MS Search function to track the latest saves and simply obtain a folder in"Documents & Settings" WHICH FOR SOME REASON I CAN'T ACCESS (Maybe a HIDDEN sub-folder --- weird).

Len, the following may help.

- Save games for A New Beginning are simply called "savegameXX.dat" where XX is an increasing number starting with 00.

- If you suspect that the savegames come in a hidden folder, you should open the "Folder options" dialog and click the "Show hidden files, folders and drives". (Not sure how these are called in XP but it must be something similar)

Thanks a lot for your help.
