When you register a youtube account you need to say if you are a male or a female, that is how youtube can tell. It won't count people who are not logged in. In fact it gives rather detailed data about viewing habits, I can see how many view each video has, from each country (counting states in the US as separate countries), the male:female distribution, how many of those views were unique and how many were returning, like:dislike trends, what videos caused people to subscribe/favourite, at what part of each video people stop watching and so on and so forth.

Well, you see, and therein lies the rub:  if you have a couple sharing a PC, chances are that the Utube acc. will be registered in the guy's name and that they just stay logged in for their Utube viewing.  I don't even remember what my Youtube password is, so I'm never logged in when viewing vids, so it's automatically not going to count me and other like me who can't be bothered to log in on their own accounts.

...so to me stats that rely on the account stats are reather moot, because they don't actually tell you who is viewing the vid, only who's accounts are being used to view it.

When it comes to shared accounts, one might expect things to even out over time, a roughly equal amount of men will use womens accounts and the other way around. Though it needs a decently sized sample for this, over an extended time period this should take place.

I suppose it depends which gender is more interested on making comments on Youtube - that's the only reason I see for registering an account, and logging in to it, really...

I can kinda see more men than women registering accounts for that reason, but that's only a wild guess on my part...

Almost everyone I know have their own youtube account, though most simply use it in order to subscribe to their favorite channels, rather than comment. And you do apparently not win any brownie points with your partner if you add a lot of subscriptions to his/her youtube account my mistake

I just uploaded the video for the hardest mission in the entire game:

It should be smooth sailing from here on.

I'm nearing the end of this LP/Walkthrough (one level left), and I'm pondering what to do next. It was quite fun to do these videos, and as a followup I'm considering either MechWarrior 4: Mercenaries (by the same company that did Majesty) or Sacrifice. Any input on these two?

Ah, Sacrifice!  Does that still play in 7?  Though I'd not want to watch it for the same reason that I didn't follow your entire playthrough of this game in this thread - I still need to play the campaigns in both of them.

I'd actually forgotten about Sacrifice - but that is such an unique that I'd love to play that despite it's age.

...so.. you subscribe to stuff on Youtube? What do you get for doing that rather than just search for that user's vids?

LOL, maybe it's just that females are more casual Youtube watchers, I suppose that's also a possibility if you were to judge by me- I simply don't have time to sit and watch vids all day, even if I had the bandwidth, I guess...

..and when it comes to games, I'm always wary of spoilers, so I tend to avoid vids about games.

I only ever watched one "let's play"  on the Codex; of an ancient AG I knew I'd never play myself.

Majesty is pretty hard to spoil, it has no real story, each level is a self contained entity with just a snippet of story at the start and end, and the missions are all randomly generated, so my videos are there mainly to help with general build strategies and such. Sacrifice though, that game has a story.

If you subscribe to someone, that persons activites will be shown in your feed. Depending on your settings, and the settings of the person you subscribe to, that might be comments by that user, liked/favourited videos or just uploaded videos (I've hopefully configured my youtube settings so that it only shows when I upload videos). And I don't think it is gender specific, at least here in Sweden I've not noticed a difference between peoples youtube habits in terms of general activity.

And I've been using let's play videos as dinner entertainment, usually for games that I know that I won't play, or games that I have played but offer many different solutions and playstyles.

Yes, I'd like to watch  the playthrough of Heavy Rain, since chances are exceedingly slim I'll ever play it.  ..but I have crappy bandwidth, like I said, so sadly that's a limiting factor re vids for me at the moment (still buffers for me, even).

I still wonder why fewer females would know about your Majesty playthrough?  Series like HOMM have a strong female following, so I'm rather surprised if Majesty hasn't.  You haven't perhaps mentioned your vid on strongly sexist sites like RPG Codex, have you? I think RPG Watch might also be pretty male biased, though they're not half as bad as the Codex.  At least they're not as overtly hostile towards females as the Codexers are.

The main reason of subscribing to people on YT is so that you are kept up to date of any new videos they release.

You can choose to have YT email you with any new uploads by that person or simply visit youtube and it lists all of your recent subscribers uploads.

Over the course of the 4 years or so I've had a YT account I've subbed to around 200+ people like the Shaytards, SMPfilms, Kassemg, Freddiew, game reviewers, etc and I didn't I would have forgotten/lost some of them. While some people upload new videos every day/week, some take months between and I woulda forgotten them.

BTW Fnord do you post on the Gog forums? Saw someone there with a similar name talking about Majesty on there the other day.

I advertised my first 3 videos at the Paradox main forum, and that is a rather male dominated forum (though not a sexist one). Since then things have evened out a little bit.

And yes that was most likely me on GOG's forum. There is another Fnord lurking around there as well, but I'm the one who talked about Majesty.

Could anyone do me a favour? Like so many other let's players out there, I've decided to activate monetization, but I really don't want any of these annoying pre-video advertisement videos, so could someone check to see if all it shows is the small advertisement that pops up early on in the video, and that can easily be closed? If I've understood the options correct (and they were not quite as clearly worded as they should have been), I should have turned off the annoying videos, but as I can't see the adds from this IP, there is no way for me to actually check.

Oh, and I do of course realize that this won't make me a fortune. If my calculations are correct, based on the estimated percentage of people who click on these adds, and the amount of views I get, it should take me about 4-6 months before I actually get money from this, and it won't be a whole lot (700sek, which is a lot better than nothing, but hardly makes this something that I'll be able to make a living of)

Did you have to pick the one video that really does not need more views

(Legendary Heroes is my most watched video apart from the very first Majesty Video (usually Let's Play videos get fewer and fewer views the further into the game you go, but Majesty is just one big exception in this regard, and Legendary Heroes is the biggest exception of them all)).

Thanks for checking. I'll set the settings that I have for that video as the default settings, now that I know that it won't be anything overly intrusive.

How do you get around the copyright content for that?

I'm just wondering because I was going to activate that on my account but reading their rules, it states that if you are not he copyright holder you need permission.

I know there are a few top YT people who do gaming (Toby Turner and TotalBiscuit) but wasn't sure how they get around that.

I have not actually requested an AdSense account yet, I just activated advertisement to see how intrusive it would be.

Technically speaking Let's Play videos might not be alright for these kinds of things, but looking at how youtube have treated other LP channels, it looks like they are alright with this. I'll ask around a bit though to see if there is anything in particular that I should have in mind when requesting an AdSense account.
