I'm sorry, darling, but it just isn't working out. It's true I found your story really fascinating, and while you weren't the prettiest game I'd ever seen, you had that certain flair I find irresistable. You didn't really challenge me intellectually, but I can forgive that: you tried your best and it's not your fault you weren't gifted with keeness of mind. I don't even care that you often stumbled while trying to act.

Our problems are bigger than that, though. I just can't stand all the bugs anymore, baby. Crashing's one thing---everybody gets tired and needs a rest, sweetie, I understand that---but skipping me ahead? Letting me use items I don't have, bypassing major hurdles, letting me do a bunch of things out of order? That really put a strain on our relationship. When you corrupted my saved game I was ready to call it quits, but then I remembered how charming you are, so I was willing to give you another chance even after that.

So we started over, and it was like falling in love all over again, except this time I knew what pleasures lay ahead, and was eager to experince them again. I even cut you some slack and went out of my way to do things in order, but in the end I got curious what you'd do if I tried to take advantage of your virtues, so I took you in my arms and skipped right ahead---and you let me! After all that time we spent together!

How do I know you won't corrupt my game again? I just can't trust you anymore, baby. I'm sorry, truly, but it's just not going to work. Maybe someday we can be friends, but right now I don't even want to see you. I hope you can forgive me.

/me kisses Darkstar's cheek sadly and walks away.

Haha, you should start reviewing on Goodreads, JKing, this kind of reporting is all the rage around there these days.  Very nice.  Who knows, we might even see a bit of a JA revival if this kind of thing catches on.

And Happy Valentines' day, everyone!

PS.  I'm very glad I read this post, because I've been feeling rather guilty for getting Darkstar and not playing far past the (looong) intro.

Such a pity, really, since this was a game I'd been looking forward to for a long time before release.  (It was in development for ages!)

Indeed I should.  Perhaps if I can summon up the energy I'll do so for my current read!

And a happy Valentine's Day to you, my dear!  I hope you had more than your fair share of pampering.  I certainly did.

I know what you mean.  I felt bad giving it the cold shoulder when I first got it just because of uneven video quality, but there you go: now I have the disappointment of failed promise instead of the tantalizing impressions of the unknown.  It's bizarre that interactive movie-type games seem to be more buggy than infinitely more complex games with 3D engines and whatnot, whether they involved development teams large or small.  I blame it all on QuickTime.

Yes, I must say I died a little inside when I saw that the game uses QT.  I thought that after a certain point in time, we'd stop having those horrible QT hassles.  Can't games just use Mediaplayer?  Everyone who has Windows has that.

I was very sad when I discovered that the person uploading playthrough videos on YouTube had given up as well.

If there's ever a patch (which unfortunately seems unlikely) I'll gladly give it another try, but otherwise I'd just be wasting my time.  What a damned shame.
