I did this before, with ai "30-day" free trial and got screwed, thinking logically "I have 30 days, I'll cancel it on the 28th or so."
They billed it on the 25th and wouldn't refund me even though the actual trial wasn't over.

The rest of the IGN prime services does not look very interesting though. A free game each month is nice, and I guess people who want an early access/demo of some MMOs, in the form of betas, could be interested, but there seem to be surprisingly little in the way of general content. Walkthroughs (something you can get for free anyway), info on game design and that seem to be about it (pro-play coaching seem to be things that you can find on youtube anyway).

It isn't worth the subscription, but their deal already payed off despite the discounts because I bought a few games on GG.
I didn't have an account there and never really checked it out before, so this marketing stunt worked.
Oh, and this will make the backlog worse, so well done tricking me into it Fnord

GG is a splinter company from Paradox (of Europa Universalis fame), so I guess this might just be a mutually beneficial cooperation between the two. The two companies are not directly linked to each other.
And I actually prefer Gamer's gate to Steam, mainly due to how much faster I can download things from GG. Steam rarely gives me more than 3½mbit/s, while GG often gives me a 7-8mbit/s DL speed. They also have a few gimmicks, like their "blue coins", which I've used to buy expansions with in the past, and the minion, which gives you a discount on games from specific genres (depending on which one you pick).
And as they are a Paradox splinter company, they have quite good contact with paradox, so they are usually a lot faster than steam when it comes to adding patches & expansions for Paradox games.

*edit* Nevermind, I was able to register, but the lack of graphics options means that I can't turn things down far enough to make it playable on this machine.
