ThaumaturgeJourneyman![]() Posts : 999 Joined: 11 MAY 2006 Status : Offline | Since we have threads for games being played, and a thread for books and the like being read, why not a thread for webcomics?
(They could, of course, go into the "reading" thread, but that thread seems to be primarily used for entirely literary works, rather than the mix of visual and literary that webcomics present.
Print comics could potentially be included here, but as I tend to separate them from webcomics, I think that I'm more inclined to have a separate thread for them; I do however bow to the preferences of the majority on this.)
The main purpose of this thread, as with the reading and gaming threads, is to ask what webcomics we each read, or have read, in the cases of finished comics.
That said, I see no problem with discussion of webcomics in general, or of individual comics.
My own list, then:
(These are in no particularly relevant order, please note.)
Comics that I actively read: The tale of Lord Tiberius Skärva the Fourth, would-be overlord of Idenau, a parody of RPGs and, to quote the "about" page, a story about "the odd and helpless situation of being a villain in such"; and with all that, aiming to be something more interesting that "just" a parody.
The story has more or less just begun, but thus far we have an amusing setting and enjoyable characters, along with art that I find rather charming.
There have been a few schedule slips of late, but the comic doesn't yet seem in any great peril. The journey of the amnesiac Trace Legacy and a keidran (read: animal-person) girl named Flora through a world in which great tensions exist between humanity, the various keidran tribes, and the more insular basitin (a different group of animal-people).
Note: includes at least one human-furry romantic relationship. First note: this comic at times includes nudity and discussion of sexuality, and occasionally some (fairly mild, I think) horror elements.
That said, it's primarily the story of Bernadette and Maytag, a swordswoman and a jester, and their various adventures in a fantasy setting. An adventure-comedy with elements of drama, I suppose, centred around a group of teenagers in a world similar to our own, but with the addition of magic, mad science, aliens, immortals and the like.
Notes: 1) Fairly often includes transformation, and, as part of that, gender-bending.
2) The art has come quite a distance, I think, as, perhaps, has the story-telling; I recommend skipping the earlier parts of the comic. Perhaps somewhere between "Shadows After Dark" and "Grace's Birthday Party", although some might prefer to go further back. A very amusing (or so I think, at least) parody of DnD and RPGs, with entertaining characters and curious events; to start with, the main characters are a group of adventurers, each of whom is from one of the "monster" races: a rust monster, a gelatinous cube and a mimic. Each "level" (story-arc) sees them on some quest or other and partnered with a temporary ally (who may well appear in some capacity later). The art is bright and clean.
Note: Make a point of reading the alt-text for each page. A story set in an ocean-covered world, following a shipwright named Luna. Luna would seem to be a curious girl in a city whose authorities want certain knowledge to remain hidden...
Visually, Everblue is one of the lovelier comics on this list, with some wonderful colours, effects and designs. A comedic superhero comic following newly-super Spinnerette and her various allies and enemies, including Mecha Maid, The Werewolf of London Ontario, Ben Franklin (yes that Ben Franklin) and "Evil Spinnerette" (the last of whom gained her powers from an early DnD manual that included actual spells).
Very good art, I do feel.
Note: Can be very fanservicey at times, I fear. Thus far we have two thieves in an alternate American colony (here called "Aradie"), in a world that includes spirits and working alchemy, who find their territory infringed by a mysterious thief - one who turns out to be rather more unusual than they may at first guess... The story of a woman from "our" world who finds herself drawn into an alternate Earth in which magic and supernatural races are real; her main desire is simply to get home, but it seems as though that may be a taller order than expected, and may draw her into deeper affairs than may be safe...
What is there to say about Penny Arcade? It is, after all, probably one of the most famous webcomics on the 'net.
In case anyone here doesn't know it, however, Penny Arcade is a slice-of-life/gaming webcomic. While I don't find it often especially funny, I do think it generally amusing at least.
Note: Vulgarity and profanity are not particularly uncommon in this comic. I'm not yet quite sure of where this fantasy adventure is going; we have a villain with a power that is noted as being unusual - and potentially dangerous to him - and a (somewhat uneasy) group of potential adventurers, but quite what will come of it I don't know. Nevertheless, it is reasonably entertaining, and is well-drawn, I do feel. A fantasy story centred around a mute girl named Faye, who seems to have somewhat fallen into adventure.
An epic fantasy adventure - and, often enough, a parody of such. Features an interesting cast, good art and, especially early on, some amusing pokes at such stories.
Note: Some occasional gore, albeit not very often, I seem to recall.
A webcomic with wonderful art, interesting characters (starting with the main pair, a young, foul-mouthed, betailed rogue and the eloquent undead sorcerer sent to protect her), good character development, a fascinating magic system (especially if you follow the author's Formspring or read up on the wiki) and a setting detailed in both depiction and construction, I do believe.
Young Sette Frummagem (the aforementioned rogue) is sent out by her crime-boss da to check on a family member who hasn't been sending back his cut; to protect her, her da has blackmailed Duane Adelier, a skilled spellwright who happens to be undead, into taking up the role of bodyguard. The story looks as though it has rather more than that building up, however; there are discoveries made and characters revealed that point to a larger plot afoot...
Note: Some foul language and occasional horror elements and disturbing imagery. A lovely comic, set in a most unusual world, following a young boy named Bali. The direction of the plot has not yet been revealed, that I recall, at least, but it is thus far an enjoyable ride.
Note: Seems somewhat plagued by schedule slip, which the artist has a bit of a history with, I fear. :/ A sci-fi comic for a change, following a group of humans picked up by an alien spacecraft. While the aliens in question seem to be benevolent, there seem to be others out there who may very well not be...
Another comic with lovely art.
Cosmic fantasy about a girl named Willow who wakes up to find herself with no memories of her former life - only to be almost immediately fought over by two groups of strange individuals A very cute story following a young rabbit-boy named Cucumber who, along with his sister, finds himself suddenly relied upon to save the world as Queen Cordelia tries to resurrect the Nightmare Knight. Cucumber would much rather go to school - but it seems that being a legendary hero overrides what he wants.
An amusing comic that deals with various "manly" characters (primarily from gaming) who are trying to fit in with everyday life.
A group of young girls take turns telling stories; these (generally horror-themed) stories are the main focus of the comic. Updates rather infrequently, I'm afraid.
A group of characters quest to prevent the return of enchantment to their world. (Enchantment being looked upon in this setting as more negative than positive.)
Focusses on the citizens of a happy anarchy - indeed, a society that seems to want for little authority simply by virtue of the citizens being inclined to choose to treat each other with kindness and tolerance.
On the other hand, as recent arcs have shown, this doesn't necessarily mean that there are no external threats, that all potential allies trust them, or that they're always well-equipped for interacting with less-pleasant societies... A fun slice-of-life webcomic, with the occasional addition of sentient AIs.
I'm not yet sure of what to make of this one; it seems that it doesn't update very often, however.
Note: seems to include some gore.
Out of My Element (due back in February, I think) This comic is still at the beginning of its story, so the plot remains somewhat unknown, I fear; that said, it seems to be an adventure set in a world that includes both steampunk and elemental entities. The story of two powerful protectors of a fantasy realm, and the story of two children, apparently in the mundane world. While it seems that the former may simply be a story being read by one child to the other, I have suspicion that there may be more to it. When - or whether - this is to return, I do not know. :/
Wonderful art, an interesting setting and an intriguing story. Don't let the first, slightly slow pages put you off: it's not long before terrible things begin to happen.
Even so, the comic is not one of unrelenting darkness; through both the loveliness of the settings and the actions of the characters, more peaceful intervals are to be found. The story of a girl trying to return to her home after being washed downstream, depicted in watercolours, I believe.
Slightly meta: Both a webcomic collective (that is, seeking to support webcomic creators - female ones, in this case) and a little slice-of-life webcomic. MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
*ahem*

I currently read:
The escapades of a group of adventurers in a fantasy world that operates more or less on d20 rules. Quite a bit of RPG parody involved, but also an epic story that's developed over the course of the comic.
The Star Wars saga played out as a tabletop RPG, though in a world where Star Wars only exists as a creation of the person DMing the game. It takes some interesting deviations from the original story as the players are continually derailing the DM's plans for the game. Fun stuff. Episodes 1-3 are complete with Episode 4 just starting.

Oh, and depending on whether you're interested in a French setting rather than French language, there is the aforementioned Snow By Night. It has a French colonial setting, albeit with a fantasy theme. I've just read through the story to date, and found it quite interesting.

TravellerGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 4039 Joined: 3 JUL 2010 Location: US Status : Offline | Thanks. I've decided I really must push through and learn the language this year, and anything with pictures helps to put the words into context. I'm finding this comic http://athang.webcomics.fr/page/athang-p2a#page very helpful indeed. I've been trying to buy comics or graphic novels in French off Amazon for my Kindle, but it's proving to be a rather frustrating (and expensive) excercise.
The manga and Asterix and Tin-tin (if they are even available in both French and for Kindle), are soo expensive compared to other titles, and the cloud won't let me see inside the books.
The main problem is the global sections thing. If you're in Europe you can't buy (even just downloads) from the US, and vice-versa. It's so terribly terribly frustrating. I wonder if I'll be able to buy from the Canadian store.
PS, Dividing the globe into sections as far as TV and films and books are concerned is already bad enough, I imagine SOPA and PIPA will make that kind of frustrating and unfair type of thing imposed by publishers even worse. Who knows; worst case scenario: we won't be able to have global sites anymore and the internet will restrict citizens of each country to only be able to surf in their own countries. OMG, no, no please please don't let that happen!!! It's already happening to some extent on sites like Amazon. * * * Just call me Trav. * * * “Despite my ghoulish reputation, I really have the heart of a small boy. TravellerGuild Master![]() ![]() Posts : 4039 Joined: 3 JUL 2010 Location: US Status : Offline | Now I'm looking for any format of Thorgal, whether it be e-format or hard copy... I'd be glad if anyone could tell me where I could get hold of it. Isn't Markonikov Belgian? I suppose being Belgian doesn't mean you read Belgian comix. * * * Just call me Trav. * * * “Despite my ghoulish reputation, I really have the heart of a small boy. Interestingly, I see that there was a Thorgal adventure game.

Ah yes - for me these belong in a section that I fear that I forgot in my first post: webcomics that I don't keep bookmarks to or save URLs for, but which I do visit every so often. (Although I'll admit that I may be starting to become properly interested in The Order of the Stick.)
To that section I'll also add:
Stories set in a DnD-like universe, often including goblins as main characters. It can get somewhat interestingly strange at times; a current arc seems to involve myriad versions of the same adventuring party, across (or taken from; I'm not clear on that) a great many alternate worlds, making their way through the same dungeon.
It also has a donation-driven sub-comic featuring a goblin named Tempts Fate.
Note: Can be somewhat graphically violent at times.

It's a good time to get caught up with OotS. Things are coming to a head in the current plot arc, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what the outcome will be over the next several strips or so.
Yes, I read through it awhile back. It was pretty good, though I think the folks behind Darths and Droids have done even better with the concept.
And I've read through Rusty & Co., Shadow by Night, and Battlepug. I thoroughly enjoyed what I've seen so far of them, and I'll definitely be following them with interest.
Oh, and a comic I've just read that fits under the "completed" category: 8 Bit Theater, a humor RPG comic featuring characters from the first Final Fantasy game. I read it regularly part way through its run, though I hadn't kept up with it for some time. But as I recently discovered that it's complete I decided to pick it up again and finish it off. I have to say my time away from it has not improved it in my eyes. It was one of the first webcomics I came across and at the time I liked it. But having read better comics since then with similar themes it feels rather boring and extremely repetitive in its humor now. I mention it mostly because it was extremely popular in its heyday, and even with its problems it might be worth a look for anyone with FF1 nostalgia.

Indeed - having read a little, either in occasional pages or elsewhere, the recent revelation regarding Redcloak's Spoiler Alertrelationship with Xykon is, as I recall, what really caught my attention this time. Come to think of it, perhaps an archive binge is in order; I don't have many comic pages to read tonight, after all.

Ooh, yes - I remember 8-Bit Theatre. It was one of the first webcomics that I read much of - perhaps even one of the first that I encountered, and the related forum was, as I recall, the first forum that I was an active member of in a social capacity. I stopped reading 8-Bit Theatre years ago, but heard about it being completed, and read the ending.
Heh, that comic and that forum still prompts a bit of nostalgia in me. ^_^
Oh, and I remembered another comic in the "occasional" category: The stated goal of Erstwhile Tales is simply to tell, in webcomic format, some of the lesser-known fairy tales. Thus far they've done The Farmer's Clever Daughter, A Tale with a Riddle and Maid Maleen, and are currently telling The Bird, The Mouse and the Sausage.
The art is charming, and the stories are brief, pleasant and enjoyably told, I find. ^_^ MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
