Zaxxon was the first game I ever played!! Aaaahh such fond memories - like that annoying rocket that hitted you if you flied high. Love that game
But... my favorite arcade game is Rygar

Beat 'em up and shoot 'em up are arcade but I've never heard platforms beeing mentioned as arcade.
As i see it arcade games are games you can play for a short moment and then leave at any sec, you're not fully drawn into it, it has no end, you can play it for a long time or just for five minutes. They were made to make kids feed machines with coins.
IMO racing games (except Grand Turismo) are arcade.
Nowadays most arcade games are more advanced and you can't really be certain if it's really an arcade.

Mortal Kombat is a beat 'em up, a sub genre to arcade, nowadays there are hardly no new true arcades.
Mortal Kombat is ten times more arcade than Wario Land and Metroid.

That is the real definition of the word, However the word has been used to describe other games aswell and as you probably know, thats how our languages change.
I don't think I was clear with this before: Mortal Kombat is an Arcade.
