I am not familiar with literature but you can check out Mr Bills Review http://www.mrbillsadventureland.com/reviews/e-f/faustR/faustR.htm
Personally I really enjoyed the game and it has one of the best voice acting for Mephistopheles, of any adventure I have played, actor Geoffrey Bateman.
