good that is the best edition to buy, it is fully patched and you can freely mod it, much better than Steam which would have kept patching it and removing your own mods.

God mod helps a lot, it allows you to enjoy the journey, it is easy as pie to use, just type ~ and then TGM which stands for Toggle God Mode   and you are invulenerable. if you want to take it off, just hit the ~ key again and tgm again and you are once more mortal.

The Passive Wildlife mod helps a lot as otherwise every creature big or small will be attacking you...and it is more fun to explore with friendly animals. It is in a Mod pack i made for Oblvion that is hosted on my archive, instructions on how to install and activate it are in the pack..  there are also several other simple mods that open up the borders so you can explore the entire map, one that gives you a nice free appartment in the Imperial city and one that makes better bell sounds in the cities.

I have never heard of Steam removing mods.  Why on earth would they do that?  Link me to that info, Chris.  Also, I'm sure Steam was done patching Oblivion a long time ago.

Yes, Colpet, look for the "newbie in Oblivion" thread, started by me a couple of years ago when I was in your situation--entering my first combat RPG.  There is lots of good stuff in that thread.  Good luck!

For those of you who might not be aware of the fact - Colpet is a veterinarian, an animal/ pet doctor.  Hahaha, and i have quite the sympathy with her; - we own a little dog who bites you and and screams as if you are trying to murder her, just when you try to bath the little creature, and may hell help you if you try to cut or file her nails...     ...so I can imagine if poor Colpet gets nervous doggies and kitties like those as patients...

heheh, awww nice, a doggie and kitty doctor!  lucky them.

I wish i could...at least in Oblvion you will have nice critters to play with, i LOVE watching the deer and the other wildlilfe do their thing...

and I can give you a mod to give you kitties in your world.

Re the mods and Steam Halycon, i know that Steam regularly removes mods from other games, such as some of the sims if they are not offiicial patches, but i am not sure about OB..so i will have to look into it more. I just generaly prefer having total control over a game and its mods and installations.....hence my extreme reluctance to use Steam tho i did get Mafia II from them and so far have not tried to mod it.....

Colpet you are in for a treat...i am very glad you are joining our Oblvion family, many of us have had long and happy hours in the land of Cyrodil.

Since I only played Oblivion for about twenty-five hours (mostly due to the fact that I was committed to so many other games) starting over doesn't seem out of the realm of possibilities.  When I first started out it was suggested that I should install an easy mod that lets your character have a companion right away. Her name is Vilja and she makes the game a little easier and a lot more fun.

Back in July I made a short video to show my appreciation.

Patches are different than mods, as you know Chris.  You DO have total control with Steam.  If you're talking about hacks or user-patches, I could understand removing them, especially for multiplayer games.

Now, two years later, I LOVE Oblivion and still play it.  Although, I must admit, I prefer the rugged realism of Skyrim...I just wish Skyrim was as beautiful as Oblivion.  It is a wonderful game to visit often and kill a bunny...I mean PET a bunny or two. (Just kidding!)  In Skyrim, I love how the deer or mountain goats will trot up beside you and give you a playful nudge, then scamper off.

Vilja is wonderful, but she demands a lot of attention and chatter...and you still have to do everything else in the game.  But I found her hilarious and very friendly for a while. Then she got on my nerves.

I agree about her ..you can turn off her chatter but i still found her a bit over the top.She is still part of my install but i give her one of my houses to live in ...but i will have to remember to invite her to my annual Companoin Christmas Party which we usualy have in Bruma but I may have it in the new Castle and city of Sutch this year.

There are a number of companions, actualy now literally hundreds, to pick from, human and animal and creature...including flyable dragons... but i still reccomend playing solo to start to get the feel of the game and the complexities of the controls. Or you can pick a companion that is fully controllable like Viconia who you can ask to stay in one spot or to go to a specific location, and then you can summon her with a summon spell anytime you wish. The new Companion scripts have dozens of comands and are highly customizable.

That's a bit harsh isn't it? That thread was made not to advocate steam, it's just a friendly invite to find eachother on steam.

It opens a discussion as to the value of Steam and whether to support it by participating.  Up to you, of course.

"Some Steam advocate" for a four year member with more than a thousand posts? Posting about it on an unrelated topic? You are starting to sound desperate, Halcyon.

But yes, please everyone do read the JA Steam Group topic, it is rather fun .

Desperate about what?  I am happy and comfortable with my view and need of more freedom and less compromise with my purchases.  Go have fun--and try not to stay so steamed.

I'm done with Skyrim for now, too many quests that are blocked because of some bugs, and 2 houses i can't buy because of another bug.

I'll come back in a few months, when there're some mods that fix those issues

There're some interesting uses for dragon shouts, that i hadn't thought about yet:

I have no bugs in Skyrim, but I've cooled on it a bit.  Last night I finally got Fallout 3 running in Windows 7 64 (had to ditch all my mods and buy FO3 via Steam -- but I had a credit there, so it was virtually nothing).  And with my new vid card and 8 gig of RAM, FO3 looks AMAZING...especially with Fellout and my other fav mods.

So I'm rocking FO3 again for now, whizzing through the quests, since I know most of them by heart, and looking for things I missed during the last 400 hours or so.

Looking forward to Sherlock Holmes (not the film, the video game) and I'll go back to Skyrim soon after the Construction Kit comes out to gobble up all the new quest mods.

I don't have any idea as to whether its a bug but how do I get past the force field at the ramp leading to the College of Winterhold so I can try to complete the Eye of Magnus? NPCs seem to just walk right through.

You're too sweet Trav.

I didn't see anything to be gained by not sticking around. Just the opposite.

I made it out of the cavern and just started looking around when the attacks started again. I tried to do god-mode, but all I got was typing on the screen. I can't play a game like this, constantly being attacked. So much for my big foray into RPGs.

Just in case you do decide to try the god mode thing again, I'll give you a very detailed walk through it.  Firstly, you press the tilde (unfortunately this site keeps erasing the actual keystroke - it's that curly hyphen) key, and a kind of see-through screen will go up halfway over your screen.  You'll know it happened because the rest of the screen will freeze. Then you type in tgm and press the Enter tab.  If successful, you will see tying underneath your letters that you typed in, that says "god mode on". Then, after you see the message, you need to press the tilde key again, to exit the "cheat"  (console) mode.

Being in god mode will unfortunately not stop creatures from attacking you, but it will make you invulnerable to their attacks.  If you don't want to kill them, you can simply run away until you hear the "battle- music" stop.

If you want, I can look up for you how to do what I did at a stage in my Morrowind game:  I made myself invisible by enchanting a permanent Chameleon spell onto my clothing.  I could walk around without hostile things seeing me, and they consequently didn't attack, even if they could hear me.  Then if I wanted to talk to friendly beings, I would simply take a part of my chameleon suit off, like the helmet or the gloves, which would usually be enough to make myself just-just visible again.

In your case you'd probably want to cheat yourself such clothing, since you'd need to spend quite a bit of time in the game to be able to collect the necessary goodies to be able to make such a suit without cheating.

Anyway, I was wondering how you'd fare, since RPG's are mostly about how to build a character that can survive in a challenging environment.  It doesn't have to be via battle prowess, but then it must be  via stealth or magic, and those aren't exactly easy to build to a level of comfort without knowing what you're doing.  The only way to find out how RPG's "work" is to actually play and take the flak, and be prepared to experiment.  Sadly I can't think of an easier RPG than Oblivion that I can recommend you.

Do take note however, that Oblivion has a difficulty slider that you can slide to the far left to make everything much less of a challenge  to you.

Sorry to hear that the experience did not sit well, but that is quite typical of a first try with RPG's.  My first one was Neverwinter Nights, and I also gave up on the game after about 2 hours of trying, because things kept killing me.

However playing RPG's is a bit like starting to play Chess.  You simply cannot expect to win the first time you play.
