Twitter and Facebook are just awful, terrible examples of the shallow modern fad for instant gratificaiton without nuance, context or filters.
No way in this life or any other I will ever belong to either for any reason under this or any other sun. I am very sad to see so many otherwise intelligent and worthy people supporting or even reccognizing such twaddle. Please use another venue and I will be happy to particpate and it is good to see some other veteran adventurers

Like anything else, it all depends on how you use a site like that. I made a few posts regarding the daily screenshots and used the personal message system to send Augustin my answers. It wasn't any more twaddlish than anything I would have posted here, and probably a bit less wordy because of there's a letter limit per post on Twitter.

Heck, I remember how email was dissed as it was slowly rising to popularity, you know, about how it would kill our language, relationships, and a whole other things that never came to be.
Bottom line is, if you are a frequent forumer, you would feel right home on both networks. Twitter is excellent for being up to speed with the very latest news and post quick updates. I would never rely solely on it. Facebook is really nice to stay in touch with friends, people that otherwise I would rarely speak with. Again, I would never choose to blog on FB as it's not the right context. Forums are still the best means to discuss topics at length.
So, Email, chat, IM, Twitter, Facebook, blogs, forums, they are ALL part of the same technology with a common goal: connect people. Some trend and fall behind (IRC), others are here to stay (I believe Twitter for sure). I've seen some of the most intelligent people in this industry interacting through both Twitter and Facebook in a sane and mature way.
Seriously, you can't bash social networks while posting in a bulletin board. The concept is EXACTLY the same
