The trick to running it on XP or more recent is to reduce the sound speed via DxDiag, i use the second notch from the left and it works perfectly.

In this scene at the start of the game you can hear the birds in the garden outside, the sounds of the city, the sound of the fountain, and the detail of the teserae pavement, wall paintings and the interior furnishings are totally accurate from the period of just after Caesar's death, and the lighting is even well done with depth of shadows, reflections in the water and a nice italian luminescence to the scenes. You can visit many locations in Rome including wine shops, shops, the forum, temples and also locaitons in the country and even the harbour at Ostia. Many of the furnishings of the houses and public areas were designed from actual relics and antiquities in the Louvre and other collections, including some found at Pompeii and Heraculum. It is a historians and an archaeologists delight.
A note about the pavements, and the tesarae, which were tiny squares of ceramic, stone, or other materials that were used to make patterns, and scenes. It was a high art of the epoch, and took highly skilled craftsmen to complete, some large rooms might take a year or more to do, and many have been uncovered from thorughout the Roman Empire....remarkable features of that culture.

Here is a game with horrible graphics, that still manages to be quite funny.
