Controllers usually do work best for driving games (unless you go all out sim and get a wheel) or action-adventure style games like Dark Souls/Assassins creed games.
Though KB/M still works the best when it comes to RTS games or shooters imo, a joystick will just never be as precise as a mouse when it comes to aiming, that's why almost any console shooter has auto-aim/aim assist and it's on by default unless you turn it off (and the bane of every pc fps player who gets it in the console port to pc).
I bought both Hotline Miami and FTL (Faster then light) during the steam sale and I'm enjoying both. Just great "pick upa nd play" games that you can play whenever and don't have to devote hours to.
Hotline Miami has one of the coolest game soundtracks I've heard in a long. A kind of throw back 80's style synth electro, totally makes you want to dance while you play. Something you could totally hear in Miami Vice lol.
Even Witcher 2 works pretty well with a contoller, btw. I suspect most modern games will, bc they're now designed with consoles in mind. Not so good for shooters or strategy games, of course, but for hack-and-slashers, they're quite comfortable.

I actually still think that mouse & keyboard is better for anything that has a free camera, so I still play Assassin's creed that way. For 2d shooters & platformers, I use my gamepad though (unless they have abuse style controls, and I also think that "twin stick" shooters are best played with mouse & keyboard).
For driving though, I completely agree, playing those with a keyboard is not very fun. This includes driving in games like GTA.
ah ha, good to hear you play AC...and yes i agree re mouse and keyboard. i use a control stick for flight sims but that is the only control i will use. I am stll a PC er and prob will be forever.
just got Redguard to run finally with the Glide wrapper, but have to try the Voodoo wrapper to get the background music to play.
it is klunky to the extreme with very very old textrues so it is really just of historical interest. but they did put a lot of story into it and a lot of thought in to the lore. the full voiced dialog is fun too. some racy tavern girls in the port city where you first land and it is certainly on the edge of being an Adult game from what they are saying
i guess those were the old days of pre ratings.
two recent mega games that use a lot of driving are Mafia II and LA Noire and both are ok with the keyboard, once you get used to them. reminds me that i need to re load both and finish them, had to make room for some of the Total War mega file sets.
Ah Redguard, I still have the map for that somewhere. They even went the extra mile and actually "burnt" the maps edges and ran over them with a car (to make it look weathered), at least that's what one of the bethseda people said I remember reading it a while back.

That was true for the first printing of the game. Sadly the version I have don't have that (but it does contain some designers notes that mentions this).

In AC's case the controller seems to be more usefull, because you don't actually move around a lot with the camera.
But especially for first person games, aiming is just terrible.
Tried Skyrim with the controller to get a better feel with the device. And again if i play in 3rd person view (which i never did before) it's a lot easier. Some things like the inventory and map were clearly designed for a controller.

I still find it a tad bit awkward to use my controller when I have to move the camera in assassin's creed. It is possible that later games gets better in this regard though, I've only played the first.

The first AC has clunky controls, which is the main reason why I don't like that game.
In later AC's the camera stays in 3rd person view more quickly, so one doesn't have to mess around with the camera as much

I've been playing Test Drive Unlimited 2 this weekend, which was really impossible to play with a keyboard. I almost didn't get my driver's licence in the past.
Now i can enjoy a huge beautiful island to explore, with plenty of things to be discovered and lots of different cars to try out.

While we are on the topic of gamepads and what games they are good for, I'm currently playing Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams, and this is one of those games that I would not want to play without a gamepad.

I'm currently playing Warhammer 40 000: Space Marine. Overall it is a good action game, and they really managed to capture the look & feel of the 40k universe. On the downside, the game seem to be so afraid that I'll get lost in a straight corridor that it not only constantly blocks any attempts of going back (often with ankle-high objects or similar silly things), but also points me in the right direction with a glowing marker.
I'd pretty much given up with Telltale (took a pass on Jurassic Park) but from what I'd heard I took a chance and bought The Walking Dead Limited Edition. (thanks BestBuy) Completed the first episode and I'm most glad I don't have to wait to dive into the second.

For some darned reason, I'm hooked on Bioshock. I'm now on my third playthrough of #1 and have played #2 twice. Beats me why
Played Dishonored a few times. Love it.
Have the orignal Borderlands and can't get into it. Nothing immersive that hooks me. Everything to me seems to be at a distance, know what I mean?
Would like to try Assassin (any number) but it is third-person, which I really do not like for action games.
Battlefield 3 is great visually, but, after all, it is war game like all the others.
Of course, I'm a still playing Skyrim and Oblvion and Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
I also have Dreamfall up and running. Any word on this series?
Been spending most of my time on writing my 11th and 12th novels. Time is running out (in life) and I'd really like to get them done and published or e-published.
My day job may suddenly end soon. A reorg of marketing will eliminate Creative Services (and the senior copywriter, me, and replace us with an agency. So that should be interesting for my future, too.)
Me too. One can actually place a pre-order on Steam for Feb. 5 release although there aren't any incentives or bonuses other then getting the financials out of the way.

I just beat a rather interesting little indie game called Qasir Al-Wasat: A Night in-Between. It is a top down stealth/action game where you play as an invisible creature who need to assassinate 3 persons in a castle. It had some interesting gameplay mechanics & a nice art style, but also a few minor flaws. Still, I found it quite memorable.

Hey all...
I finished Metro 2033 and made my, eh, 5th attempt to play Morrowind and just cannot get into it. I spent out 4 hours on it, and it just does not hook me or hold my interest. Sad, as I know i'm missing out on a great game...
So, I just rolled right back into Skyrim - Ahhh... like a warm blanket
I purchased Dragonborn, Dawnguard and Hearthfire, and am now playing though the Dawnguard campaign - I LOVE killing vampires, those evil beings!
Looking forward to the release next week of Dragonborn, and visiting Solstheim.
I've been dabbline a bit with Far Cry 3 (still), Torchlight 2 and To The Moon.
I have found myself to be in Reading Mode lately, catching up on some Star Wars books I've been putting off.
Life is GRAND!

Yes I do know what you mean, especially after playing such colorful and vivid games, Borderlands is just bland and grey.
It seems it's more fun if you play it with friends, which i never do anymore these days.
...
Playing Sleeping Dogs right now, something like GTA but set in Hong Kong. Combat is melee only, which is not my specialty, so i'm having a hard time progressing into the game.

Currently I'm in the mood for a stat heavy tactical CRPG along the line of the Infinity Engine games or Drakensang, but I can't seem to figure out which to play.
So I'm playing the rather casual tower defense-ish game Toy Soldiers instead

Sad to hear about Morrowind, but unless you quite heavily mod it to look and feel more modern, i do accede that it would be very hard for a modern gamer to get into.
Even i, who used to be a Mwind purist, has modded heavily to make the graphics prettier, and i can't handle how slow my character is, so i tend to 'cheat' him/her faster at the start.
I got tired of Skyrim, so played a bit of Roach's path in witcher 2 and then my hard drives fot too full, and i bought myself a new 2T external, and then i realized my current drives are too slow, so i bought myself an SSD (2m weeks ago already), and that was where my nightmare started.
My C-drive is too big to clone onto it, and i don't want to re-install everything from scratch. Have you ever tried to shrink a Terabyte large partition down to 240 Gigabytes?
Well, if you ever do, let me know, and i'll throw a huge party for you...
Aaaanywayz, so in the meantime, i felt myself starting to drool at what Anno 207A was promising, but the stupid updater wants to add 32 patches all at once. I didn't realize that if i interrupted the downloading of these patches, it wouldn't save a single one of them-- nope, you have to start right from scratch again.
So, patiently waiting for 32 patches to download so that i can see if the game is really as awwsum as it looks...

I see there are a lot of 'collections' out now for spit cheap. I'd never bought any of the New Vegas DLC before, so when i saw the ultimate edition collection going for less than $10, i grabbed it - still cheaper than each of the DLC's were originally- or anyway, than all of them seperately, so why not.
It's only TES that never gets cheaper, sadly. I'm also waiting for the latest AC to get even cheaper, as it is sure to do, judging by the way the others went.
Oh and guess what, my Anno 2070 came with zero tutorial, and gameplay is not as obvious as you'd think, so maybe i should play the previous Anno a bit first- but they all came out with manuals and the like, as far as i can remember.

I never got why they wouldn't have a tutorial, I mean it's not like everyone that buys anno 2070 has played the others (Dawn of Discovery was a great game though). They spent so much money on developing it and it felt half done with no tutorial, but once you get past it Anno 2070 is a great game.
