Still Life and other games  by the Adventure Company won't play using windows 7. I have tried all the different compatabilities settings but it still won't play. Is there any patch or anything I can do to play it, I just tried another game from the same company, Crime Stories, and it too is not playing, just a black screen, could it be that all of the games I love from this company won't play on my new system? I just bought this new about a week ago.Its a Sony Vaio laptop Core i7,full HD 1080p, with nvidia Geforce with Cuda, 8gb Ram, 64 bit OS,Windows 7 Home Premium with service pack 1.I do believe it is the DRM that is not allowing the games to run. All my drivers are up to date. Games from other companies run just fine, or you can use the compatability feature to get them to run. I haveabout 50 games from the Adventure Company  tho that i dearly want to play, some I havent even got to play yet. Thanks for any help, Diana

Sadly one of the sad facts about Windows 7 is that once you get it, you either need to throw your games protected with Starforce DRM on the trash heap, or you need to google and download a "no-CD" patch that overrides the DRM for you.

Even with such a patch some games won't work in Win7.  Unfortunately Crime stories is one of these, as far as i know.  The other games should play fine with a "no-CD" or a "no-DVD" crack or patch.

Trav are you sure Adv Co games have SF? Maybe it's a US/UK issue since none of mine do.

That said I realized I'd not checked for SF drivers on my system for over a month. And since I've been back testing lots of older games recently after installing a second graphic card, it's always a possibility that firing up a title installs the damned thing. Lo and behold SF was back in Device Manager.... Funny thing is I have noticed an uncharacteristic sluggishness on my PC over the last few weeks, which was always the way SF "introduced" itself... So, pulled SF out one more time, and we'll see....

As to the Win7 issue, you could run them in a virtual machine no? Or install them in one, apply the NoCd patch, and transfer the safe installed game to Win7?

The Adventure Co does make reasonably extensive use of Starforce, but you're right, Tincup -  it does seem to be dependent upon region.  You're very lucky if your games don't have it on.  I have it on a lot of my non-adventure games.

To name a few Adventures that has it:  Black Mirror, Still Life, Broken Sword 3, The Moment of Silence, the Westerner.

Installing these games straight into 7 is quite safe, because 7 flatly refuses to install the (older) Starforce drivers.  However, then you won't be able to start up your game.

I've found that applying the crack patch does then help for that in many cases. Sometimes one's antivirus software will tell you that one of these are a virus or a hacking tool, (which it of course is - not a virus, but a hacking tool, I mean) but generally i've only had that once.   This is why I've been ranting and raving so much about 7, but it's actually the use of Starforce that is the fly in the ointment.  Oh well, one just has to try and work around it as best you can.

One does have to be sure to apply the correct patch ("crack"
for whatever version you're using, as they do seem to be pretty version specific.
