A short and rather interesting video on the subject of propaganda in games.

It reminds me of why I was never able to enjoy Command & Conquer Generals. It was not the game itself that was the main issue, but the way it portrayed certain groups of people.
Watch the video and you will understand what I'm talking about.

dangerous topic, one might easily break forum rules while posting here, so i'll keep it as neutral as possible

I must say i've seen a whole lot more of propaganda in movies and tv-series compared to video games. I can't think of another example of propaganda in a game right away, while i could  give you some examples in movies.

As for the portrayal of Muslims terrorists as the enemy, well they share the same fate as the germans, russians and chinese had in the past. They4re easy targets for being chosen as the enemy in movies and games because they have been considered as a treat once upon a time.
Besides the politically correct alternatives don't always work:

Zombies have almost no intelligence, so you can't expect have a ingenuous plot to take over the world. Outsmarting a zombie is less satisfying then outsmarting a human being

Aliens don't work either because they need to have human traits to work as an enemy. One will soon discover the parallel between the aliens and their real-life counterparts. So the discrimination is just more hidden

You mean like the ill-concealed parrallels between Elves and Native Americans in so many games?  :

This always irritates the * out of me.  I'd prefer elves to be real elves.  What a pity its most probably not PC to portray "Red Indians" or Native Americans as themselves.  If they did do the latter, they could create a native American faction that includes their rich cultural heritage, instead of creating an elf class that is neither really properly either Elves or Native Americans.

The problem is not the fact that there are muslims who are enemies in games, it is the fact that they have become the default "stupid bad guy". If there was a more even spread between games (and movies) then this would not really be an issue. And a lot of propaganda is unintentional propaganda, as the makers of the video pointed out, I don't think the makers of Modern Warfare were sitting in their offices trying to come up with ways to make Muslims look bad, but the end result is sadly that they helped hammer that into the minds of the public.
In regards to Command & Conquer: Generals, I remember one reviewer making a statement that was along the line of: "This game also realistically portrays how muslim terrorists operates and thinks". Well, that is a blatant lie.

And I can think of a rather interesting propaganda game, one that was even released on steam. Do I disagree with this game? Well not at all, I actually strongly agree with it, but it is important to see it for what it is: A propaganda game   (my view of the conflict might have been shaped by the fact that I had a person in my class in elementary school who had fled from Iran with her family, so she has told me quite a lot about how it was in her home country).
