Ok, I must say that the screenies I've seen looks so beautiful, that I'm wanting to join in...

On the other hand, my bandwidth would most probably be too slow for the high-res version...  :'(

'The Hobbit'  was always one of my favorite books, since I was a child, so I love seeing those Hobbit burrows.

But there seems to be a wide variety in scenery, looks like you can avoid those if you don't like 'em.

I've asked a few times in these forums if anyone is playing LOTR now that is free and all I got was crickets.

Let us know how you do, Mark.

I played it when it came out for a couple months with some friends. Then tried to pick it up again when it went f2p.

It's just too much of the same old same old for me. Getting burnt out on the basic mmo formula that EQ setup for graphical mmo's (theme park style world, lv system, extremely item dependent, trinity class setup, etc).

Hoping Guild Wars 2 brings enough new to the table for mmo's.

I dug into it pretty enthusiastically a few months ago. Then I more or less burnt myself out on it, and haven't been back for awhile. I had to ask myself, "Would I be playing this on its own merits, if it weren't Lord of the Rings and it only had some generic fantasy labeling instead?" And to be honest, I would have to say probably not, as my gaming preferences and personality put me at almost polar opposites to MMORPG's in general, and this game is a pretty ordinary one at that.

But I am a huge Lord of the Rings fan, and  it's likely the only Lord of the Rings RPG experience I'm going to ever get, and it is graphically captivating. I love the environments, particularly the Shire. I'll have to try to get back into it sometime, maybe when the harvest festival starts and I can work on some Inn League quests again.

I've read the books complete five times and I am a veteran of the extended films
I think I will have to dive into this myself.
I haven't because I don't want to be terribly disappointed.)

Yep, if I do it, it will be for the Lordof the Ring-y environments. Btw, I think the Fall Festival is starting now or very soon anyway.

As for me, it would probably be most wise for me to wait until 10 November when my exams finish.  Sadly the next day is 11/11/11 - Skyrim!   ...so now I'm very tempted just to peek...   :-/

I played LOTRO last year for about 4 months. I liked it a lot, it has plenty of quests, there's a lot of room for exploration and the landscapes are quite beautiful and detailed. I recommend the game if you're not looking for a massive game like WoW but rather to something more quiet that you can play for a couple of hours when you have the time to (it's not as time consuming as other MMORPGs, you can also play solo if you feel like it, you don't depend on others as much.

I thought about re-playing it as right now besides LA Noire on PS3 I ain't playing anything else. But I'll guess I'll wait for Skyrim. In the meantime I got Airline Tycoon 2 coming out next week, and I'm quite happy about it!

I'm just a bit sad that there aren't any good adventure games coming out anytime soon... do you know anything about Memento Mori 2?

Playing: Skyrim (ongoing)

Last Finished: can't recall, been too long.

Hi, Ines! Ah, so you already have LA Noire?  I'm waiting for it to come to PC- should be on 4 November.  Do you like the game?

Re adventures, aren't you also looking forward to the new Sherlock game?  http://www.sherlockholmes-thegame.com/en/index.php?rub=news-info&id=95
(Release date seems to be set for 18 Nov)  My, November is going to be a busy month!

Can anyone tell me if LOTRO still looks ok in the low-res version?  I'm assuming I'll need more bandwidth to be able to play it in hi-res.  Sadly I have to decide which one before I make the download, it seems.

ohh you're right trav! i had completely forgotten about the new SH! thanks for the reminder

i cant wait till we all start writing on the skyrim thread with info on our characters, progress, joys and rants (hopefuly there wont be much!).

anyway, if you decide to play lotro i might install it as well, november is still far away! (what am I saying...  :
)

about LA Noire, well... it is fun, each case is very compelling to solve, you have to interview suspects, find clues, etc. my only complain is that there ain't a lot to do besides finishing the cases and doing some minor side quests (which basically are emergency calls you get while in your car that you may or may not respond to... these missions are essentially shootings and car chases). The story is very linear, you won't get to know much more of the main character other than what the game wants you to. You can't go to his house, to a restaurant, etc, in the ways that you would in games like GTA. So there's no much room for exploration, although you are free to roam around the city (which is beautifully detailed) while conducting a case. For the story worth, I recommend it. Just don't expect an open-world game where you can roam around freely and choose when to do certain quests.

Playing: Skyrim (ongoing)

Last Finished: can't recall, been too long.

Nice, beautiful and detailed world, with lots of quests and characters to meet so that's a big plus.
But there are two things that annoy me:
1) clunky interface with lots of boxes and hovering texts everywhere, unless there's a way to turn them off it lowers immersion.
2) Auto combat! >
I prefer to hammer my keyboard/mouse.

Some of my favorite pics from the game:

Slightly tipsy from a drinking contest, hence the blurry screen:

And completely drunk here!

I call this my Ewok outfit.
The bearhead helmet was an impressive hunter quest reward, in terms of stats, but was getting me laughed at in Bree. I was relieved when I finally got an alt at a high enough level to craft me something more effective and less silly!

I started this but didn't get past the basic training.  I keep meaning to have another go.  I'm not a fan of Lord of the Rings, I just fancy playing a game with buddies like I did in Uru.

Is LOTR strictly 3rd person?
I'd go look for a video, but I'm at work

Just passing on a warning from other people I know who have played this game:
It offers a fare amount of early-mid game content, but later on you really need to pay to have anything new to do/any sense of progression, and many of the more unique features are strictly for the paying customers. Most MMOs (LOTRO included, it would seem) are designed strictly with progression in mind. The only one that I can think of that is not is Ultima online, and it is ancient (though they have at least updated its game engine, for those who crave a bit more eye candy. Many of the people who have played it for a long time still stick to the old 2d client though).

Thanks for the head's up.  With all the great games coming, I think I'll resist this one.

Looking forward to:

Skyrim
Skyrim
and
Skyrim
Battlefield 3
Sherlock Holmes
Rage (but later)
Batman Arkham City
Maybe LA Noir
Face Noir (if it ever gets into English)
Dreamfall...where on earth is the sequel or serial?
...and others, I'm sure.

Lots of $$$.  And it's tough to get a loan these days.  Getting another job is out of the question. Oh well, I'll just tax my kids (I"d tax their millionaire boss, but if I did, he'd fire my kids to make up the money!!!)

Well, the harvest festival is winding down this weekend, and it was quite a success for me. I reached kindred in the Inn League with my hobbit, as well as in the Ale Association with my dwarf, earning the faction mounts for each of them. (The Ale Association mount is a goat, which is somehow fitting for a dwarf.) I couldn't resist getting the sable festival mount either, I'd been wanting a black horse. And best of all, I got the rare skeleton mount in a drop for my main character. So instead of being a clothes horse, I think I'm becoming a horse horse. Though I did earn a couple clothing items I like in particular, a raven mask and cloak that gives my hobbit hunter a rather ninja look.

Cool cool cOOL COOL!!!  I think I'm going to be downloading the low res version of this soon.  My bandwidth might not be up to the HD version, but i don't mind!  I want it, even in low D!

LOTRO just did a fun little weekend event. They added a treasure hunt area in Ered Luin where players can go out and dig up various goodies like emotes, costume and housing items. But the highlight was definitely the mounts available, with the speed and health of the best mounts. I managed to get two different ones for my main character:

Treasure Laden Goat (It jingles and drops coins as it goes):

Cave-claw Mount (Ugly, ain't it?)

And there's a horse that's a counterpart of the goat that unfortunately I failed to get. Perhaps next time.

I also got a treasure hunting pack that went well with the Indiana Jones look I'd already been cultivating:

But the oddest costume item I picked up was definitely what they were calling a jeweller's helm. Jeweller's helm? I look like a hobbit-borg! (Hobborg?)

And finally, a non event related pic but one I thought was funny. You know nature hates you when the deer and the wolves gang up on you together!

I tried to get into LotrO, but just found it really clunky and difficult to play/get into. Still I'm glad you're enjoying it. I'm a bit of a fan of Tolkien lore.
