Besides, the famous Tex Murphy persona gets established no sooner than Under A Killing Moon - before that Tex is a faceless archetypal detective.
Lastly, 5 is a remake of 1, so you won't miss the "origins" story.

I mean sure, they had their problems, but let's not forget UAKM and Pandora Directive had some enormously frustrating issues as well.

Thanks to the encouragement given in the thread, I decided to take the plunge for that price, and buy the other 3 as well.
So I downloaded Killing Moon yesterday, and it looks cool! I just started it, but won't have much time to play, since I have other stuff to finish.
Thanks for the input, people!

Enormously frustrating issues, like being unable to stop playing them once you started ?

The second game was a mixed bag for me. Tex is starting to develop as a character here, but there was too much pixel hunting and illogical puzzles.
I enjoyed the third game in spite of some severe problems. A low res 3D environment made finding items painful. And the control system is is one of the worst I've ever encountered. The acting was generally bad even by FMV standards, and that's saying something. But even with all that, the game had a certain undeniable charm. Tex Murphy is an appealing underdog hero, with his wry outlook on almost everything. He largely made the game work for me.
I haven't played the last two games yet; I'll be curious to see how they compare to number 3.

The acting is hammy, but it feels more intentional somehow, and it adds to the game rather than detracts from it. 5 has a less interesting story overall, but it is still a solid game. I managed to break the hint system in it though (there was a bit of pixel hunting later on that bugged me, but the hint system had not updated properly as I had done a thing totally out of order).

With today's high-res graphics and advanced audio technology, it's almost painful to replay old titles like the original Tex Murphy games.
But I did so recently with the free GOG.com downloads that have seamless DOS Box installation / execution for easy OS compatibility and enjoyed the experience.
While the newer releases in that series look and sound much better, they aren't necessarily better games.
Cheers, Terry
