Actually, aspect ratio is one of the minor concerns when picking a monitor. The kind of panel it uses and the advantages and compromises each one has can be a real headache. From another recent thread

I've had my new rig for a couple of weeks now, and powerful as it is, the thing I love the most about it is the monitor, a 23" one using an IPS panel. I'll never be able to comfortably use a plain TN panel monitor for an extended period of time again, and up to a month ago I swore TN was good enough and spending more for an IPS panel was a waste of money  :
.

IPS panels offer vastly superior colour quality and viewing angles compared to the widely used and dirt-cheap TN ones, but they have higher response times, which can lead to tearing and ghosting when playing very fast-paced games.

In practice, I have not noticed any such problems, and I've been playing Divine Divinity 2, The Witcher 2, Metro 2033, Left 4 Dead 2 and Team Fortress 2 on it, as well as watching Blue-Ray movies like Inception.

You are also fairly limited for choice, as non-TN panel models are fairly rare and aimed at professionals, with prices being accordingly steep.

Only recently have really affordable solutions become available, in the 23" and 24" categories.

The one I got is the  LG IPS231, one of the most reasonably priced IPS panel monitors, and I'm very happy with it.

If you decide you want the 16:10, 1920x1200 resolution, this Dell is one of the best choices, for twice the price  :-/. It sure looks cool, though

Good price on the monitor.  I paid nearly that for my LG W2361V a year ago ($220....now it's very much cheaper).  But I love the monitor.  The stand, not so much---it's junk and doesn't even tilt, although the specs say it does.  And I don't like the glossy frame.  Satin finish would be my ideal. Nit picky stuff.

Gotta go.  My new 4 gigs of RAM just arrived!  8 Gig, here I come!

The next one I get will be an IPS for sure. I went out and bought a Samsung monitor a few months ago but returned it straight away because it didn't look half as good as my old TN Dell.

I agree totally that a good monitor is essential - like good speakers are to a sound system. It's the princiapal way you interact with your rig so it should be at least on par with the box itself. It's the area I usually loosen the purse strings on the most since picture size and quality are rewarding every time you turn the rig on.

I went with a Dell 24" 2405W 1920x1200 a few years ago and never looked back. Not sure if it's IPS or not and don't remember the term when I purchased, but the 2407 is, so it may be. I was using one for work - mainly for AutoCad - and it performed so well with detailed work and pictures I picked up one up as my gaming rig. But, for color nothing has equalled an Iyama 19" CRT I had before. Gold really looked like gold [think Riven dome..]
