The last Express is relatively famous among adventure gamers, but nearly unknown to the rest of the world. The game has a beautiful hand drawn style, believable characters, a real time environment with characters moving around, doing their own things (which can impact you) and many endings. The last express can be found on GOG for $6.

And I see you mention Callahan's Crosstime Saloon, well, as far as I am concerned, playing all the adventure games developed by Legend Entertainment should be obligatory to get posting rights in any adventure gaming forum . Except perhaps Time Quest, you can skip that one.

Played (and loved) Last Express, but I haven't played Schizm yet, thanks for reminding me! I read some reviews at the time when I discovered Myst and was scared away by it being called the "most difficult game ever made" and stuff like that.

Great, that's a couple more to add to my list. I Have No Mouth sounds very interesting, and as for the Legend games, I've wanted to play Xanth/Shannara/Death Gate for a long time now. The two Gateway games were fantastic.

If you are interested in the game, get the "redux" version, it is the game game but with most technical issues resolved and the FMV sequences look better.

ADD: and Mission Critical perhaps?

Status : Offline | I just remembered that I quited liked all of the adventures based on Star Trek, 25th Anniversary, Judgement Rites, and Final Unity.
If I had to pick one though, I'd go with STNG: A Final Unity, the last and more mature in terms of design of the lot.
Edit: Ah, I just remember a few more DOS era adventures that weren't all that well-known, in spite of their high quality.
Touche: Adventures of the 5th Musketeer.
Orion Burger (by the guys that made Riddle of Master Lu).
Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender (by the guys that made Dragonsphere).
Flight of the Amazon Queen (but that has gained some measure of fame since going freeware and being supported by ScummVM).
Shadow of the Comet.
Bloodnet (a bit of an adventure/RPG hybrid, must play for gothic/cyberpunk fans)
Kingdom O' Magic, a very humorous and sadly overlooked little gem.
Well, I could propably come up with a few more if I really put my mind to it, but it can wait until you play the ones above .

You can't kill someone in a studio.

Hm. I played it both in pure DOS (on a Celeron 333MHz, 128MB Ram, NVidia Riva TNT 16MB ), and using Dosbox on a much more modern PC. That was at least 4 years ago and my memory is a bit fuzzy, but I did fiddle a bit. I think I installed, in Dosbox, a VESA driver called univbe.

I don't think that's necessary. But if all else fails, you could always try having sex with a virgin, you never know what will work with these old games.
