We've boarded up our windows, secured everything that could blow around, and have lanterns and supplies in case (or should I say when) the power goes out. Right now we're getting rain from the outer edges and a bit of wind.

They also have a summer house on Long Beach Island (I think it's called) right next to the beach. Hopefully they still have it in one piece after Irene has passed. [smiley=scared.gif]

Well, I do hope all our members and friends and family of our members will be staying safe with Irene doing a tour.

4 days in New York, 3 in Miami and a weeks cruise in the Caribbean.
Thye did manage to get the flight and hotels etc changed at short notice so now they are flying straight to Miami tomorrow for a week there and the weeks cruise.
Damn shame as they were looking forward to New York.
Stupid Irene. >

Years ago I lived in Manahawkin, which is inland a few miles from Long Beach Island, so I spent a lot of time there. I now live about 20 miles northwest as the crow flies.
Lucien, All public transportation in NYC is shut down. They don't want the power to go out while people are riding the subway, and general flooding is going to be a big problem. It has been raining here in NJ since noon (8 hrs.) and the wind is just starting to pick up. We won't feel the full brunt of this until the wee hours of the morning. I think it's going to be a long night.

Just been watching the streakers - now that's how to celebrate a hurricane!
And you have stupid people there same as us: they head to the beach and then wonder why they get swept away. [smiley=shaking_head.gif]
But.... a storm 800kilometres long. That's the distance from Adelaide to Melbourne. That's a whole day's drive. That's HUGE.

The hurricane itself was most severe around 4:00 AM here, but we still have power. Our oak trees lost a lot of leaves and branches, but fortunately none of the debris was large enough to do any damage. Two larger branches shook the house when they landed on the roof but it seems that the shingles are still intact.
Irene is now officially a tropical storm, which will still pound New England's coastline with rain and high surf, but we're out of danger here to the south.

Caroline, I can never figure that out either, you know a BIG storm is comming but people still do stupid stuff and head to the beach, guess they want to see how big the waves are. [smiley=shrug.gif] I havent seen any streakers though.

My neighborhood fared well from the looks of things, lots of leaves and smaller branches down, but no fallen trees or the power outages that I'm hearing about elsewhere in the county. One death in the area that I know of, but that was of some fool out camping who had a tree fall on him.

Granted it's a wide beach, but all it would have taken was one rogue wave to wash him away. It bothers me that they spent the whole time telling people not to do something that they were doing. Also, they periodically showed amateur videos, and asked people to send them in if they had them, but to stay safe. Yeah, right! If you're on the beach during a major hurricane taking videos, then you are not safe.

Glad to see that Andromus and LadyK seem fine.

Coastal Connecticut was hit pretty hard as Irene came ashore there at peak high tide and they saw some significant flooding with hundreds of large trees downed and lots of power outages.
Good news is that reports of serious injury or death have been minimal from North Carolina all the way up through the New England states. New York City really dodged the bullet too and as mentioned above, the storm has since been downgraded with far lower wind speeds and relatively mild flooding.
The biggest concern right now seems to be restoring power to many residents and resuming flights, etc. in a timely manner.
Hopefully, CB is okay. However, if he lives in Connecticut, the power may still be out in his area. So let's be patient while awaiting word...
Cheers, Terry

There was one standing around in Sea foam, talking about how it tasted, etc.
Sea foam most likely mixed with raw sewage... http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=df9_1314529907
