In MS flight sim 98 (one out of 2 non-combat flight sims that I have played in my days, the other being Flight Unlimited 2) you mainly just fly around (though being proper simulators, just flying around is not all that easy
)

Cris & Nicolas, you have really managed to convince me, I need to get my hands on Microsoft Flight Simulator X! There are really a silly amount of addons for that game (there is even one that allows you to fly a space shuttle), but I'll settle for the gold edition for now.

You also get VERY familiar with the intricacies of civilian aviation protcol, the challenge of instrument flying, navigation in general, and the layout and funtions of airports and airstrips world-wide. And you fly anything from a Tiger Moth to a Jumbo Jet. Curiously I never got past FS98, being absorbed with the fighter piolot thing, but that may change shortly..

I might join Fnord in snagging a flight sim....to fill the gap until Skyrim.

Welcome to the Friendly Skies...

Nick's Tweaks will help ..getting FSX running happily....

http://www.simforums.com/forums/setting-up-fsx-and-how-to-tune-it_topic29041.html

I am sure you both will enjoy it, it is a remarkable adventure...and there are a gazillion free add ons, i will detail below the adding of files proceedure   You will need a good joystick, and the better your vid card is the better FSX will perform for you, but there are tweaks that can help with all of that.

Adding Planes

C
rogram Files/Microsoft Games/FSX/SimObjects/Airplanes

Find SimObject folder
Find Airplanes folder

New Planes go in there. Drop in the file with the plane name, if there are effects they go into the main Effects folder in the main FSX install, if there are Gauges they go in to the GAUGES folder in the main FSX folder ..the planes will appear in your selection list when you start up the sim.

Adding Sceneries:

C
rogram Files/Microsoft Games/FSX/AddOn Scenery

Each new Add on Scenery will be added usually into the AddOn Scenery Folder in the main FSX directory...each of these named folders will have a Scenery Folder and a Texture Folder. Some will ask you to add a Traffic file which creates AI traffic, that usually goes into the Main Scenery Folder in the FSX directory, thus:  FSX/Scenery/World/Scenery

Then you have to start up the sim and to go the Scenery section and add each new scenery. They wont appear until you add them on the menu list.

Venice Italy, a wonderful add on with great detail and if you have one of the classic run about launches you can cruise the canals.

An older example of a Venice add on by Lago, for FS9 but it shows the detail that is possible...

You will be able to select any of thousands of start locations or a Latitude, Longitude and altitude start point in Free Flight or you can use any of hundreds of pre created flights that come with the sim or that you can download.

A visit to the Pyramids of Egypt (the older sim, FS9) in a Classic DC3

even has the famous night Light Show...

Get away from it all

A Lear Jet over the Golden Gate Bridge

you can go anywhere..this is a wonderful expansion of Canada and Alaska that is based on UT textures ...and done by FS Addons..

You will learn to use the cockpit controls, there are two forms of cockpit, Virtual which is a full 3D cockpit which you can pan and move the camera around and the controls usually respond by click of mouse, or 2D which is just the cockpit panel, most planes these days have fully functional instruments including all the LCD screens and actual landing lights and aides that respond to you, you will be able to recieve instructions from the Tower and you can respond using a menu of choices (there is no way to actually talk real time to the tower YET )..... and you will have detailed landing instructions, where to taxi to and what gate to use. If you start at a gate, you will call for a push back and a little tug will come put and pull your plane back, please do NOT run over the virtual ground crew..they dont like that...and your landing fees may go up. If you land at night at a detailed airport, little landing crewmen will guide you with light wands

A great Add on Airport for Portland Oregon that has amazing detail...

, and you can call for a de icing truck if you are at one of the airports that are equiped with them in the winter months.

The sim runs on real time, ie day night cycles,

Sunset over Lake Lucern, Switzerland flying a classic Junkers Ju50 in Swiss Livery

One of the classic Empire Class flying boats over the East Coast of the US at dawn

and there are add ons that will create the same weather in the sim that is in the real world, as well as add ons that create working departure boards and announcments in the airports of your choice, plus WOAI that will allow you to add AI planes of hundreds of world airlines with accurate liveries and planes that land and take off on correct schedules at those regional places...

be sure to get the Acceleration X Add on version.
