I just beat the game (co-op), and the game restarts once you beat any of the paths. There seem to be 3 in total, though I might be wrong here. Judging by how it handles co-op progression, I can understand why they picked the save system that they did, even if it is a bit awkward for singleplayer.

 

Anyway, I'm still not sure if I know what was actually going on in the campaign.
