Hey there, gang, do you happen to know any games, adventures or non adventures, that take place in Eastern Europe? Except rally games and Path Of The Dragon, that game disappointed me.

Alternativa an adventure game set in a futuristic Prague, but i didn't really like it, the storyline didn't appeal to me and it is a very linear game.

Still Life 1&2 also partially set in Prague.

the S.t.a.l.k.e.r. series, An open world FPS located in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant Exclusion Zone filled with mutated enemies

COD, have ypu played Secret Files: Tunguska, and Momento Mori?  Oh, and Still Life?

EDIT: Oops, sorry, didn't see Markonikov's post there.

...and have you played the first 2 Dracula games, Dracula: Resurrection and Dracula: the Last Sanctuary?

Dracula Origin has bits of it taking place in Transylvania too.

Why didn't you like Path of The Dragon?

Probably the rest of the Dracula games do
.

Here are a few more:

Undercover takes place all over Europe, and has at least one short section in Russia.

Nibiru starts in Prague.

Culpa Innata takes place in a futuristic version of Eastern Europe, but most of the game is set inside a futuristic city so you can't tell.

Also, Half Life 2 seems to take place in a futuristic Eastern Europe, but again there's not much to indicate where you are.

The Mount and Blade games I believe take place in a medieval version. At least "Fire and Sword" does.

There are a couple of freeware games called Soviet Unterzoegersdorf (part 1 and 2) which parody the communist regime.

Oh, and The Big Red Adventure, but that one's rare I think.

Why are you interested? For the views, the historic locations, history, specific countries?

If you like classic-style, isometric, SP CRPGs, Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader is pretty good (but not great). It is set in an alternate version of medieval Europe and uses the SPECIAL system first introduced in the truly great Fallout series.

Released in 2003, the PC system requirements are quite modest by today's standards and you can download a DRM-free version of the game at GOG.com for $5.99 USD.  Might be worth a look...

Well, I've played Still Life two, I think, started off quite nicely, but bored me to death later, I'm not even sure if I ever finished it, but it was set in the U.S.A. as much as I remember. Also, same story goes for path of the dragon, amazed by it in the beginning, but disappointing later. That happened with Scratches too, as a matter of fact. I've played some Dracula, but I can't remember which one it was. I think it was origins, I remember Egypt... Culpa Inata and Memento Mori sound decent, are they any good? mainly, are they too artificial and hard? I really hate that kind of games. I've played S.T.A.K.E.R. of course, and Half Life 2. HL was in Bulgaria, I think. I have no idea what SP CRPG means.... is that like Diablo? Single Player Core Role Playing Game? I'd like to try those early Draculas, they are by frogware, are they not? Ohh, just seen some gameplay for Alternativia, seems alright, I might just give it a shot. Well, most of Adventure games are as linear as hell. The question is, what do you mean by linear? Is it as linear as Gray Matter or The Lost Crown, or even more? if so, explain how. I have started to play Tunguska One before my system crashed, and I found it rather fun. Got somewhere in Ireland, I think. I think that I managed to save the save game from erasing when reinstalling Windows. I'll get back to it before the end of the summer break, I guess. Undercover? Surely you don't mean NFS, do you? Anyway, I've finished that game. Hmm, The Big red Adventure? But, even if I find it, I'll never get it to work on XP, I guess, 'tis from '95. Also, it appears to have one of those non smart cursors that were used back in the days of the cold war. communist indeed, my friend. Ok, if check Soviet Underkrutztlung or what ever on the 'tube, it seems really... How to say, goofy, but since it's free, it might be worth a shot later this year. Lol, at the Slayer graffiti and metal hammer Mag in the game.
I'll definitely be playing it now.
Yeah, I've heard about With fire And Sword being located somewhere in Poland I think, but firs I'll have to finish Warband in order to play it. The reason I'm interested is because I live there, so I wanted to try out something closer to home.
What is this Nibiru? i have never head of it. An adventure, yes? Oh, God what a long post... Who the hell is gonna read this..
And who knows just how many mistakes I have made...

Linear storytelling like the lost crown is ok, but linear gameplay is awful.

fictitious example: the game won't let you pick up a key unless you've specifically 'looked at' it. And even worse
If you've already looked at it before you've encountered the lock the key shall open, you have to 'look at' the key again to pick it up :

Which results in frustrating puzzles where you know exactly what to do, but haven't met the prerequisites for it yet :-/

By heaven, COD, if at least you'd make use of paragraph breaks, it would be a lot easier to read...

Anyway, from what I can glean of that long post, you have not played Dracula: Resurrection and Dracula: The Last Sanctuary yet.  Who knows, you might just enjoy them.  They're adventure games.

Nibiru is also an AG, yes, you might just enjoy it- who knows?
All the aforementioned games should be quite cheap by now.

A CRPG is a Computer Role Playing Game, and is a title usually used to distinguish it from an action RPG . We have a thread about this from loong ago, let me see if i can find it.

Close, but no cigar. It is used to differentiate computer (and console) RPGs from pen & paper RPGs. Quite often when there is another letter before "RPG" you don't add the C, it is obvious enough anyway (ARPG, WRPG, SRPG and JRPG, and I think that is all of the common ones)

True, but since a lot fewer ppl these days still play (I know you do) the actual tabletop RPG's,  "Computer Role Playing Game"  has in a large part become synonymous with "Classical Roleplaying game". (As in Baldur's gate.)

See our long discussion about it   here.

I hate to break it out to you, but you live in Central Europe

EDIT: okay, or maybe Southeastern if you live in Belgrade.

I cannot think of any games that channel Eastern European culture, except The Witcher. The reason I fell in love with the game in the first place is because it felt so close to home. And do I dare mention GTA4...? /hides

Pen & paper RPGs lost a substantial part of its market during the second half of the 90's, probably in large due to the price of computers dropping to a point where it became common for families to own their own computer. But since the early-mid part of the 00's, the market has grown quite a lot (it seem to be far more commercially viable to sell pen & paper RPGs these days than 10 years ago, judging by the amount of games that are getting released). Pen & paper RPGs is still a bit of a niche hobby, but it is not a small niche hobby. (A similar trend can be seen in board games).

You are seeing a lot of PC CRPG players refer to the genre as CRPGs (it seem to be the norm over at RPGwatch).

And on to the topic of this thread, Hussar Games offers their hex based TBS 1848 for free. It takes place during the Hungarian independence war (1848-1849). Is that close enough to home?
http://games.softpedia.com/get/Freeware-Games/1848-Free-Full-Game.shtml
I tried to play it a while ago, and while the game did show a lot of promise, I never got into it (had other games that I was playing at the time).

Oh, hot damn it, I never learned the sides of the world in English... I only know west for sure... Cekaj, East je istok, jel da, a South... South Europe, that is what I mean, I mixed it up, southeastern Europe is what I meant, the Balkans to be more specific... Damn... But I'm pretty sure I do not live in Central Europe, 'tis close, but no. I live in Serbia, if you remember Dona.

According to wikipedia Central Europe consists of Austria, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, Poland, Slovakia, Solvenia & Switzerland as its "core", and Croatia, Romania, parts of Serbia (norther part), Western Ukraine, Western Belarus, parts of Russia, parts of France & Parts of Italy are listed as sometimes being considered parts of Central Europe. I have read books that considers Serbia as a whole to be a part of central Europe though.

Yip.  That's been my fave RPG (or shall I say CRPG?
) haunt for the past few years.

They (the Watch members) used to be quite elitist about the distinction between ARPG's, JRPG's and CRPG's (the latter as in "classical", such as the DnD Computer RPG's).  However, since The Drakensang or "
ark Eye" (which is based on the Dark Eye pen 'n paper tabletop RPG games) series seems to be the only "big" non-indie CRPg series left that follow the "dice roll" kind of D'nD type rules, they have gradually started moving away from this elitism, in contrast to a certain other older RPG site that they have splintered off from, the latter site still clinging to the olden days and "classic" elitism.

Interestingly, I see more and more members from the older site making a move to post on the Watch rather.  To me personally, the Watch has a much nicer atmosphere.

By CRPG, I meant Computer Role Playing Game as opposed to Video Console RPG or Pen & Paper / Tabletop RPG or Text-Based MUDD RPG or any other form of RPG.

Also, SP = Single Player as opposed to MP = Multi Player or MMO = Masssively Multiplayer Online

That's right. I live in Northern part so I tend to ~forget anything below Danube. Central/Southeast Europe would be more correct. But Serbia is often connected with Eastern Europe because of language, culture and all that. I just like correcting people on it

I know exactly what you're asking for, CoD, but I can't think of any games :C They probably don't even exist.

Sadly, the lines between Computer RPG's and Console RPG's have become very much blurred lately as devs are leaving the computer market behind for what apparently seems to be the more lucrative? console market.  This is very apparent in the latest slew of sequels, like DA2, TW2 and ME2, all which have aquired some degree of "Consolitis", even in the PC version.

Having a game designed for dual platforms does not have to mean lower quality though, since the Elder Scrolls games have always been released on both PC and console - including my beloved Morrowind.

With older site, do you mean RPG Codex?

Yip. I didn't want to mention it by name, since there was a lot of politics involved when the split took place.  I myself hardly ever visit there anymore. (..and then mainly to check out the strategy game scene).
Too bad it is one of the few places around where you still find enthusiasts of your older, more complex style of gaming, since a lot of the people around there.... mumble mumble...  ok, I don't want to say too much.  :-X

The less said, the better.  Some of our members here are still pretty active over there, though.  Why, are you also one of the Codexers?

(Btw, the Codex is one of the sites where I would never, ever, let on that I am female.)

No, I found the general tone to be a bit too harsh over there, and there were too many memes flying around. When lurking it did, at times, feel like I was reading something that had escaped from 4chan when reading some of the threads on that forum. This & RPGwatch are the only two videogame related forums that I visit

Yes, the reason that the split took place, is that one half of the Codex wanted moderation, and the other half didn't.
So the result was that the ppl who wanted moderation started up the Watch.

The Codex has moderators, but I think they mainly fulfill an administrative role - you can literally say anything on the Codex without being moderated for it.

You might agree with me that the results speak for themselves.
