I can't claim to be big on RPGs and I certainly haven't played many, but I really enjoyed Vampire: the Masquerade. I thought of it as an action adventure and got really caught up in it. So much so that I played it twice (second time with the knowledge of what was about to happen in the myriad of sneaky plot twists helped me to keep my best weapons instead of lose them all!).
Deus Ex took over my life too, but I've tried playing that again and found it extremely slow. Definitely not an advantage knowing what's coming (and how long its going to take you to get there....!)

One of my local game shops is selling Fallout and Fallout 2 for a £5 each, so next time I'm in town I'll pick them up.

Back in the day I was a real big fan of the Dungeons and Dragons games. But I've never really found an RPG that I enjoyed as much as the original Pool of Radience. The Baldur's Gates games were kinda cool, but I wasn't real keen on the combat system, and they got boring after a while.

Seems like everything these days is all about real-time combat. Any good turn based games around any more?

Anyone ever played Arcanum? It looked like it could be good.

You could make Baldur's Gate fully turn-based if you wanted, combat would just take forever that way.

Wizardry 8 got a lot of good press and I think it was turn based.  Maybe you should check that out.

Thanks for the suggestion. I just checked out wizardry 8, not my bag though. I like 3rd person with an overhead type view.

So far Planescape Torment, and Fallout are looking pretty promising.

Yea, if you want isometric view with turn based combat, Fallout is definetly the way to go.  Planescape has the same system as Baldur's Gate, but it's just so damn awesome I don't see how you wouldn't like it.

Planescape is the best rpg I have ever played.  BUY IT
There's so many things that you can do in it.  And yes, the ending is awesome.

Hell, buy all of the rpgs made by Bioware.

SPOILER QUESTION!
Has anyone fought that Lady of Pain person?  I thought it was possible but I did hear of her putting you in some maze if you made her mad.

If you attack her drones enough she'll eventually appear and maze you.  I never did it, and I was somewhat dissapointed she never shows up through the normal course of the game.

ANOTHER PLANESCAPE SPOILER

You can also buy the doll of her in that shop with all the weird things, and pray to it three times.  That makes her maze you, apparently.

SPOILER END

I just have to say that one of the first RPGs I played was Baldur's Gate 2, and I found it completely amazing and addictive.  The range of quests and the many different ways the game tailor's itself to the individual player makes this the RPG with the best gameplay I've ever seen (though I've yet to play Fallout).

My problem with Baldur's Gate 2 is that it was just TOO big.  I really didn't want to spend 6 months playing through everything, so I just kept to the plot-required quests and beat it in like 2 months or so.  I felt like I really missed out, though.  I'd play it again someday, but the time commitment is just too big, so I'll have to just leave it at that.

I totally agree with that, I gave it up after a few weeks.  :-[

I find it very hard to play to a "real" pc RPG, they always end up being too big and much too hard for me. I tried Planetscape a few months ago after reading some good reviews and I ended up frustrated again because of the scale of it (sooo many characters to talk to, soooo many quests from the begining, crazy...) and the difficulty of the combats (oh my God!).

I wonder if those games are only for RPGs fans who are used to the way the genre works.  ???

The only RPG's that  I could play were Dungeon Master (great learning curve), Morrowind (never finished because I lost my savegames) and Ultima Underworld. UU is really great for beginers, it is very simple to handle and the difficulty level was good for me. :

I still own Planetscape, maybe one day I'll give it another go but the game I suggest for somebody to start with is Ultima Underworld

Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it.

I think Might and Magic VI would be a good first RPG...I always played it turn based, pausing after each combat command...I like to think it out, not have to rely on reflexes.  Also the interface is quite user friendly, some wonderful RPGs have quite a learning curve just to start.

I liked Might and Magic 6 too.  It was a little cheesy though.

I was thinking about the whole Balder's Gate series and realized how big it was.  If you combine both games and the expansion packs, you have at least 350 hours there.  That's one powerful character if you tranfer him/her from the first game to the second.

Funny you mention Baldur's Gate, Bob...I just started Baldur's Gate 2...loved Baldur's Gate 1...incidentally, I started BG2 with a new character, not importing my party from the first game...I imagine it might make the game more challenging.

Not sure I'd use the word "cheesy" for M&M6...but, yeah, it is a little on the cute side...still, I loved it!

Hi
If you have never tried Darkstone you are missing out on one of the Best RPG's to date.  My wife and I still play it 3 - 4 time a week.  Even though it is an old game now, it has better graphics than any other game of that type I have tried.  When you start a new game you get to keep your gold and everything you can carry into the next game so there is always and insentive to play it again.

Nethack.  http://www.nethack.org/  It's not only good, but it's free.

A while back I had a friend who was a periodic Nethacker in the past who talked me into trying it out.  It wasn't as hard to get into as I expected (being a longtime fan of text-based IF, that might be just me).  The game is suprisingly deep in what you can do and what is included.  Personally, I never expect to finish it because of the dedication it requires, but it 's a fun diversion at times.  I've tried graphical versions, but the original text-based interface is the best.  There's nothing like being scared to death when a letter walks into a room.  You have to try it to see.

Well, keep on dancing, it is a really good addon.  You should have a great time with it.

Just a little eye candy.  When you have completed one of the monuments, rest til night and hopefully it will start snowing and look up at the snow falling down from the darkened sky and at the same time the lights from the monument going up towards the sky.

Well Gamaholic,

Just finished the main Bloodmoon quest.  I happened on it by mistake and half way through I said to myself, me thinks this is the main quest.  Hell of a quest.
Now, onto other quests and there seems to be tons,  I still need to get over to the mining colony plus other things on the island.

Did your  Bloodmoon come yet?

Lalalaaaa....yep, came yesterday!  I'm going to install it Saturday so i can jump right in.  At what level did you encounter the main quest?  I'm still pretty early in the original main quest of morrowind, i think i'm level 8, so i suspect i'd get me-self slayed rather quickly
Have you tried creating a werewolf character yet?  and on that note...have you tried becoming a vampire ?  so much to do, so little time..

it's so funny you mention this game...
I downloaded it a couple months ago myself, and though i haven't played, I have been playing similar games on my pda...iRogue (like the pc rogue), iLarn (again, ported from the pc game Larn) and kMoria (from the pc game Moria).  These are all similar to nethack, and it's a kick to get so much entertainment from a bunch of letters attacking you and representing treasures and spells.

I am on level 56.  Had the choice at one spot to become a werewolf or not and chose not to.  Have a ring now that i think will let me be one.  It will be fun to try.

Well, at level 8, you have a whole world ahead of you since you have all three games.  Have decided they could squeeze the titles of at least two more addons on the main title, so hope they will do so.
