I'll always be an adventure gamer at heart, but I'm really interested in trying other genres. Since my friends keep trying to convince me to play an RPG, I thought it would be a good idea to ask you guys.

What's a good introduction to the genre?

The only RPGs I've played so far are Fallout 2 and Betrayal at Antara. The first one I liked, the second one not. Since then my time has been taken up again by adventures. But I keep hearing I'm missing out on some great RPGs. So what are the good RPG for a newbie?

I've read a lot of good reviews of Planescape Torment. But I heard it's more for the advanced RPG player?

And besides it might be a good idea not to start with the best RPG out there. Otherwise all the others I play afterwards will just look mediocre.

Thanks for the advice; I'll be on the lookout for this game!

I would totally disagree that it's only for advanced RPGers.  It's only the 3nd RPG I ever played after Final Fantasy 7 and Diablo, actually.  It's not extremely combat heavy, and probably the only RPG I know of where your Wisdom stat is the most important thing in the game to improve, regardless of what character class you choose.  In fact,

***VERY MINOR SPOILER AHEAD***
You can only get the best ending in the game by NOT fighting the final boss.
***VERY MINOR SPOILER OVER***

It has an unbelievable storyline and unlike many RPGs (especially action based ones) gives you true leeway to shape your character through your decisions and actions.  I would absolutely recommend it to an adventure game fan who is a novice RPGer (which I still very much consider myself) because it is low on action and high on plot, and won't overwhelm you with its hugeness like Baldur's Gate 2 will.

If you think you'd more be into the action-style RPG than by all means go for Diablo or Dungeon Seige, but I know adventure gamers usually demand a more cerebral experience, and Planescape is IT.  If you have any other questions about it let me know because I will be pimping that game until the sun don't shine.

Play Dungeon Siege. It is a nice length, easy to get into and doesn't have much of a story for you to worry your pretty head over

I absolutely agree with Planescape!! It almost plays like an adventure game. It's the perfect starting point! Then get Fallout and be even more blessed.

Yeah i agree with torment

Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit.

My suggestions,

Morrowind and addon Tribunal
Soulbringer
Torment
Might and Magic VI, VII, VIII
Anachronox

Probably could think of more but haven't had morning coffee yet.

Hmm, seems like Planescape Torment has a lot of fans and it's REALLY good!

I'll try to get my hands on it as fast as I can.

Just a few more questions: What about the Planescape's combat system? Turn-based, real-time? What about the allocation of experience points? Can you let the computer do it? (I'd probably choose the wrong skills anyway
)

@ Gayle: do the Might & Magic games have a continuing story line? (so should I start with one of the first in the series or is that not necessary?) M & M is turnbased right? How much connection is there with the Heroes of Might & Magic series (I really love that series!)? Can you tell me a bit more about Anachronox? (story?, turnbased/realtime?, ...)

@Revliskci: I'll probably get Diablo first, see whether I really like the hack-'n-slash RPG (It's in a bargain bin at my local software shop, so it's very cheap). If I like it Dungeon Siege is the next one on my list. But I think I'll like it; sometimes some brainless action is all you need!

Thanks for the advice guys. Really appreciate it!

and don't miss darkstone as well... another great hack'n'slash rpg (some ppl disagree but i thought it's the best along with diablo i)

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

Planescape's combat is sort of real-time and sort of turn-based.  The computer is running through turns, but to you it looks like it's all happening in real time.  However, you can pause the action at any time to give orders to your guys.  Actually, you can make it auto-pause at various points so you can really make it as real-time or as turn-based as you want.

As for character stats and experience, there aren't really "skills" like in Morrowind or Fallout.  You just have attributes like strength, agility, wisdom, etcetera.  When your character gets enough experience, he levels up and improves, and occaisonally you'll make a choice as to how he improves.  There's not a whole lot of management to be done, really.

Nice to hear an opinion on Darkstone...I've seen it in the bargain bin at my local Gamestop, but didn't know if it was any good.

I say it's good (VERY good)... others say it isn't... so you won't get a standard opinion on this one (but then again, that's what happens about everything!
)

Might & Magic can be turn based or just good old fighting.  Sometimes the turn based is good when you open a door and surprise there are 10 swordsmen on the other side.  I prefer just fighting run away and heal and come back.

No, the premise is the same but the stories are completely different.  So you could play VII then VI and then VIII.  I didn't recommend IX.  It is good but not as good as the others.  I started with VI so can't recommend earlier ones.

You will have a good time with Torment.

I heard the M&M series sort of went the way of mediocrity after #7.  Any truth to this?

My recs for you:

* Planescape Torment (WAY above all others in terms of atmosphere, storyline and character depth)
* Deus Ex (if you count it as RPG)
* Neverwinter Nights
* Baldur's Gate (not so much BG2 which I somehow didn't like although the spells show you the real thing; BG is sort of an introduction to the spell system)
* M&M 6 (I really liked that one, played hours on end and never finished it)
* Ultima 4-7 (4 and 5 are a bit ancient, don't try 1-3, they are heavily outdated, Akalabeth is even worse, 8 is action/adventure/rpg with too much hopping around and 9 is...well...action/adventure in quite a huge world, it's a technical masterpiece if you ask me, nobody had done anything like that to this point, but it failed at good gameplay)
* console RPGs like Zelda - yes, it's an action/adventure, i know - Secret of Mana - and everything comparable to this which is too much to list - Breath of Fire 1 and 2 and Chrono Trigger (!)...play at least that one, it's one of the best efforts on console I've ever seen, you need an emulator for all these

playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&&
all-time) 24, Stargate SG1, X-Files, Lost, House

Ultima 7 might be an acquired taste but it's one of the best games ever. Actually, it's one of the Top 10 games ever. The same with Ultima Underworld.

Another RPG of epic proportions is Betrayal At Krondor. This game along with Planescape has some of the best writting ever. It's freeware so you should definitely try it.

No, M&M fell on it's nose with M&M IX.  They changed the graphics format, the music, plus other things.  If you liked M&M as much as I do, then IX was a waste of time.

Just didn't have the involvement that the other three I have played again and again.

Thanks guys. I know now what I have to do: get Planescape Torment asap!
I'm already working on that.

If I like that one, I'll also try to get Fallout 1, M&M 6 and maybe some of the others you guys mentioned (I'm on a student budget, so I can't pay for them all immediately  :
)

I'll also try Diablo, Darkstone or Dungeon Siege to see how I like all this hackin' and slashing!

I'll post what I think of the games as soon as I have played them for a bit.

Can anyone tell me a bit more about Anachronox?

And I saw the game Nox in a bargain bin. Is it any good?

Anachronox is one of my favorite games.  You get funny lines, chose strange beings to accompany you on your ventures and some of the story parts are different depending on who chose.

Has the funniest spaceship jail scene, like all the characters are loser super heroes.

The ending is fantastic and what can I say I love the game.

Having a planet in your party sure is a blast

The ending is actually not much of an ending... more like set up for a sequel IMO. But I agree that Anachronox is a very fun game. Pretty unique. Has some good music too.
I forgot my sig.

Deleted UserPlanescape.

Neverwinter Nights if you've got a fast PC. Most beautiful RPG IMHO
