I've read a lot of good reviews of Planescape Torment. But I heard it's more for the advanced RPG player?
And besides it might be a good idea not to start with the best RPG out there. Otherwise all the others I play afterwards will just look mediocre.
Thanks for the advice; I'll be on the lookout for this game!

It's not extremely combat heavy, and probably the only RPG I know of where your Wisdom stat is the most important thing in the game to improve, regardless of what character class you choose. In fact,
***VERY MINOR SPOILER AHEAD*** You can only get the best ending in the game by NOT fighting the final boss. ***VERY MINOR SPOILER OVER***
It has an unbelievable storyline and unlike many RPGs (especially action based ones) gives you true leeway to shape your character through your decisions and actions. I would absolutely recommend it to an adventure game fan who is a novice RPGer (which I still very much consider myself) because it is low on action and high on plot, and won't overwhelm you with its hugeness like Baldur's Gate 2 will.
If you think you'd more be into the action-style RPG than by all means go for Diablo or Dungeon Seige, but I know adventure gamers usually demand a more cerebral experience, and Planescape is IT. If you have any other questions about it let me know because I will be pimping that game until the sun don't shine.

Resistance is not futile, we're gonna win this thing, humankind is too good, we're not a bunch of under-achievers! We're gonna stand up, and we're gonna be human beings. We're going to get fired up about the real things, the things that matter! Creativity, and the dynamic human spirit that refuses to submit.

Just a few more questions: What about the Planescape's combat system? Turn-based, real-time? What about the allocation of experience points? Can you let the computer do it? (I'd probably choose the wrong skills anyway )
@ Gayle: do the Might & Magic games have a continuing story line? (so should I start with one of the first in the series or is that not necessary?) M & M is turnbased right? How much connection is there with the Heroes of Might & Magic series (I really love that series!)? Can you tell me a bit more about Anachronox? (story?, turnbased/realtime?, ...)
@Revliskci: I'll probably get Diablo first, see whether I really like the hack-'n-slash RPG (It's in a bargain bin at my local software shop, so it's very cheap). If I like it Dungeon Siege is the next one on my list. But I think I'll like it; sometimes some brainless action is all you need!
Thanks for the advice guys. Really appreciate it!

You have gotten the attention of the mysterious lady. She turns to face you. Her face is devoid of any flesh. You are frozen with horror as she begins ripping your body into a bloody mess.

However, you can pause the action at any time to give orders to your guys. Actually, you can make it auto-pause at various points so you can really make it as real-time or as turn-based as you want.
As for character stats and experience, there aren't really "skills" like in Morrowind or Fallout. You just have attributes like strength, agility, wisdom, etcetera. When your character gets enough experience, he levels up and improves, and occaisonally you'll make a choice as to how he improves. There's not a whole lot of management to be done, really.

Nice to hear an opinion on Darkstone...I've seen it in the bargain bin at my local Gamestop, but didn't know if it was any good.

I say it's good (VERY good)... others say it isn't... so you won't get a standard opinion on this one (but then again, that's what happens about everything! )

No, the premise is the same but the stories are completely different. So you could play VII then VI and then VIII. I didn't recommend IX. It is good but not as good as the others. I started with VI so can't recommend earlier ones.
You will have a good time with Torment.

Status : Online | My recs for you:
* Planescape Torment (WAY above all others in terms of atmosphere, storyline and character depth) * Deus Ex (if you count it as RPG) * Neverwinter Nights * Baldur's Gate (not so much BG2 which I somehow didn't like although the spells show you the real thing; BG is sort of an introduction to the spell system) * M&M 6 (I really liked that one, played hours on end and never finished it) * Ultima 4-7 (4 and 5 are a bit ancient, don't try 1-3, they are heavily outdated, Akalabeth is even worse, 8 is action/adventure/rpg with too much hopping around and 9 is...well...action/adventure in quite a huge world, it's a technical masterpiece if you ask me, nobody had done anything like that to this point, but it failed at good gameplay) * console RPGs like Zelda - yes, it's an action/adventure, i know - Secret of Mana - and everything comparable to this which is too much to list - Breath of Fire 1 and 2 and Chrono Trigger (!)...play at least that one, it's one of the best efforts on console I've ever seen, you need an emulator for all these
playing: Destination Treasure Island (done in two sittings, but it's nice), Syberia (ho-hum), Dracula: Last Sanctuary (on hold)&&reading: even more study papers&&listening to: this and that, plus Musicovery&&TV favorites: (currently) Pushing Daisies, Chuck, Journeyman (cancelled! grrr...), Heroes&& all-time) 24, Stargate SG1, X-Files, Lost, House

Another RPG of epic proportions is Betrayal At Krondor. This game along with Planescape has some of the best writting ever. It's freeware so you should definitely try it.

Just didn't have the involvement that the other three I have played again and again.

If I like that one, I'll also try to get Fallout 1, M&M 6 and maybe some of the others you guys mentioned (I'm on a student budget, so I can't pay for them all immediately :)
I'll also try Diablo, Darkstone or Dungeon Siege to see how I like all this hackin' and slashing!
I'll post what I think of the games as soon as I have played them for a bit.
Can anyone tell me a bit more about Anachronox?
And I saw the game Nox in a bargain bin. Is it any good?

Has the funniest spaceship jail scene, like all the characters are loser super heroes.
The ending is fantastic and what can I say I love the game.

The ending is fantastic and what can I say I love the game. The ending is actually not much of an ending... more like set up for a sequel IMO. But I agree that Anachronox is a very fun game. Pretty unique. Has some good music too.
I forgot my sig.
