Saturday has been "re-install old games day". I'm up to Obsidian. I am trying to full install it by hand, which looks like it should be simple - each of the 5 disks has one big file - but it still asks for discs etc., and I don't see any config type files or registry entries to fiddle with. The CDR really winds up [it accesses very large files I guess] which is loud and distracting.

Anyone have luck "taming" this one?

EDIT - have it.. got a file from Vogons that patches the CD exe to run off a dvd instead of the 5 CD's
Copied contents off all CD's into temp folder
Made iso using Free ISO Creator, making sure to rename the lable to OBSIDIAN [default is "new"]
Mount iso, install, play..

Free ISO Creator only lets you use it about 10 times until it starts asking for a registration number. It directs you to their site where you log on, and if you don't pay for the upgrade, you need to solve a stupid math question to release the code. I had to do it a bunch of times until it would accept one of my answers. But it works.

That's their copy "protection?"
They make you do math if you use the trial version?

lol yes. Silly things like: 324 x 456 - (233 - 933 x 235) - 765  = ....
But on the other hand it does work and I have made dvd sized iso's for:

Obsidian
Schizm
Dark Side of the Moon
Reah

I've managed to full install most of my other 4+ CD games but these really needed iso's - unless you don't mind disc swapping, loud CDR and stuttering video...

Thanks for the pointer, tincup.  I tried for hours to fix a way to hex-edit Obisidian into submission a couple of years ago and never managed.  Now I'll finally be able to store those pesky discs away for good!
