Status : Offline | It might be an issue with a corrupt file. Try to uninstall your version of directX (there are programs out there that can help you with it) and install the latest version. There might also be issues with your graphics card drivers.

Status : Offline | As far as I know I don't/didn't have DirectX installed on my system at all anymore. I was playing Gray Matter a little while ago but my computer crashed to the point that I had to restore to factory settings- so DirectX would have been scrapped from my system. I tried installing Dragon Age and it crashed on my so I reset to pre-DirectX installation. I've been trying various games and all of them freeze at installation. I'm going to see if I can find DX on my system somewhere.
What should I do if it's a graphic card driver issue?

Status : Online | Using system restore doesn't uninstall things completely.
Most likely you have some DX things left behind and because you're restored it's conflicting iwth installing/uninstalling things because it can't find things it needs.
Make sure you cleanly uninstall all direct x files and fully reinstall them to the latest.
As far as video card drivers go, did you update them? You should also remember when you install new video card drivers you should always first uninstall your old ones, reboot, then install the new drivers. Don't simply install the new ones over the old ones.

DirectX is part of the operating system - so it wouldn't have been scrapped. If you are running Vista or above, and the game asks to update DirectX 9.0c allow it to do so. Otherwise it won’t find the correct libraries.
Is there a specific error message, or does the system just reboot? If there's no error message it sounds like you may have an over-heating issue.

Status : Offline | There is no message at all- installation starts normally but then the computer literally freezes. The only way to restart it is to manually reboot. When I've had this problem in the past I got to the point that the computer would turn on but after a few minutes of running freeze again. Eventually it wouldn't start at all- hence the restore to factory settings.
As far as video card drivers I've never touched them (as far as I know).
As much as I love playing games I am a complete amateur when it comes to how a computer actually runs. I normally switch on and install various games as I go along. That's it.

Status : Offline | It sounds like you may have a hardware issue - if you have an off-the-shelf model, like Dell, I'd run their diagnostics suit.
It could also be related to a missing update from the OEM, check for chipset and BIOS fixes.
What model is your PC?

Status : Offline | Sounds quite confusing!
I have an HP pavilion Notebook PC.
It's currently working again btw! I downloaded a program uninstaller and rebooted Lunascape (which seemed to be where the problem originated). So far so good.
