Now that I've played Amnesia: The Dark Descent, there is no need to even begin to think. No need to discuss 'moments', any time spent playing it left me shaking in terror. Each time I had to leave the computer in fear (quite often) it was with a beating heart, narrowed field of vision, feeling dizzy. Funnily enough, these were the same effects the in-game character got in the game.
For other adventure games, I remember Phantasmagoria being quite scary, along with Dark Seed. The 7th Guest and 11th Hour also left indelible marks on me as I was quite young when I played them.

I've never played an Adventure game that even approaches this game in creepiness. COCDCOTE is one of the creepiest games out there - sadly not a pure AG, though.
Scratches has a few moments and Penumbra is also reasonably creepy, though the latter is once again not a 'pure' AG.
Sherlock Holmes The Awakened has a pretty creepy moment, but I won't tell you where in the game it is, or I'll spoil the fun.

Black Mirror 2 got really creepy at the end, the music, Darren's psichological breakdown, the shadowy environments, I have to say it got me a bit scared
Playing: Skyrim (ongoing)
Last Finished: can't recall, been too long.

I'm talking about the type of feeling one gets that you fear something is going to jump right out at you in the real world. The game that did this to me was Sanitarium. The first time I completed this game I ended up with the creepy feeling and had to take a break from the computer. I can play the game just fine without that bad feeling. But the first playthrough I'll never forget.
Aside from Sanitarium, only two other games have given me the creeps. Silent Hill once and Contra Hard Corps at least two or three times. The aliens from Contra HC looked like they came straight out of The Thing which is why the game creeped me out. As for Silent Hill, it's a survival horror game. I don't think I need to explain the reason it was creepy.

It's amazing that AG developers can achieve such tension in a genre where your character ususally can't die like in shooters, RPGs and many other action games.
They have to rely on relatively modest means to create suspense through immersive storytelling and dense atmosphere.
Scratches certainly had its moments as have quite a few other PC AGs and I think it comes down to making you really care about the player-character/s. That takes talent as a writer, artist and producer.
Cheers, Terry

Oh, yes. I was already jumpier than a long tailed cat at a rocking chair factory, then THAT happened. You could have scraped me off of the ceiling.
Another memorable moment for me was the first time I quit 7th Guest and happened to have the volume up when Stauf yells "COME BAAAAACCCCK!!!!" Never saw that coming, and neither did my heart.

The furnace part is the only time I actually jumped off my chair and screamed while playing a game. And I experienced all Silent Hills :\

There were some rather creepy moments in Darkness Within too. Those creaky old houses.... and the well in the cellar....

Just being in that house freaked me out with its scary atmosphere and those bloodstains or what looked like bloodstains and blood smear/drag marks.
Oh, yes, and that dark well was creepy.. [smiley=shudder.gif]

Ditto here! I don't scare too easily, and Agustin does it to me better than anyone. : I can't wait for Asylum.

Oh, Trav how could I have forgotten that!? Sometimes I recall that scene on nights when I can't get to sleep and the closet is open just a crack.

It plays out like an adventure, you have to explore, figure out puzzles and uncover the storyline. However it's also a survival horror game in which you CAN be killed and die. You don't fight, there is no "guns" or even melee weapons, you are just a real human and your best bet is hiding...in the shadows.
What makes the game unique is how it balances shadows and darkness. You NEED to be in light in order to not "lose it," the longer you are in darkness the more "Creeped out" you get, start losing it, hearing sounds, etc. So you have to know when to hide, when to use light, etc.
Here's a hilarious guys reaction to the game getting creeped out by it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loSzpvq73FY
Also while not "jump out scary/boo" type of a game, I think Sanitarium has some of the CREEPIEST atmospheres of any adventure game. The land with all the disfigured children, and their "friend," still creeps me out.
Highly recommend it if you haven't played it, a great point and click adventure game you won't regret.
