This is my friend's PC, runs XP, she gave me all the discs for it but there was no Win XP reinstallation CD in the bag, so I ordered XP Professional (only one I could find for $20) on ebay a couple of wks ago. Been hanging out at PC Guide these days, discussing P PC # 3 with my friends there.

Model is S5000V HP Compaq.

When I turned it on to assess what was wrong with it, it kept shutting down all by itself after a few seconds, so I removed the console cover to take a look inside, and found the culprit - a loosely dangling HSF.

This told me that the CPU was overheating thus causing the resultant shutdown. So I removed the mobo, then the HSF and CPU. Examining the HSF, I found a broken clip,

which was responsible for the HSF's falling off of the mobo retaining bracket. So I ordered a Thermaltake (suggested by a buddy at PC Guide.com) HSF for $20 + free S & H from Newegg, and am now waiting for this to arr.

I see from your ***PCGuide forum thread*** that your heat sink arrived.
Too bad you didn't recognize what the thermal pad was. It would have saved you a little effort.
I guess you'll find out soon enough if the loose heat sink is the only problem.

What do you mean, "too bad you didn't recognize what the thermal pad was"? - I've never seen this on a HSF before, plus I'm still learning and gaining experience as I go along, and I'm allowed to make mistakes, right?

Do you mean that I didn't have to add that thermal paste atop the CPU this time around? I wasn't sure, so to be on the safe side, I applied the thermal paste.

EDIT - Stopped in at PC Guide where they told me that I should either use the thermal pad already on the HSF or thermal compound, not both - a mistake on my part, something to chalk up as learning experience. What happens if you use both the thermal pad and thermal compound (curious)?

Use one or the other - using both will lead to overheating.

What?

Yes. Since the thermal pad was already there, you didn't need the thermal paste. Using both the thermal pad and thermal paste is too much.

Yup. No lasting harm done though. You just have to clean the mess off and reapply the thermal paste like they're telling you on pcguide.

It would get too hot. But since it's a Pentium, it would just shut down when it got too hot rather than frying itself.
