What do you mean, "too bad you didn't recognize what the thermal pad was"? - I've never seen this on a HSF before, plus I'm still learning and gaining experience as I go along, and I'm allowed to make mistakes, right?
Do you mean that I didn't have to add that thermal paste atop the CPU this time around? I wasn't sure, so to be on the safe side, I applied the thermal paste.
EDIT - Stopped in at PC Guide where they told me that I should either use the thermal pad already on the HSF or thermal compound, not both - a mistake on my part, something to chalk up as learning experience. What happens if you use both the thermal pad and thermal compound (curious)?

Use one or the other - using both will lead to overheating.

Since the thermal pad was already there, you didn't need the thermal paste. Using both the thermal pad and thermal paste is too much.

Yup. No lasting harm done though. You just have to clean the mess off and reapply the thermal paste like they're telling you on pcguide.
What happens if you use both the thermal pad and thermal compound (curious)? It would get too hot. But since it's a Pentium, it would just shut down when it got too hot rather than frying itself.
