Greetings all!

I have been playing Adventure Games since...well, I was gonna say Myst, but I now recall I played "Adventure" on a mainframe in the 70's...and I still love them, but my time is a little tight, so I have to be selective about which games I devote hours, days, and weeks to.  Since I am only occasionally in touch with the Adventure gaming community, it is hard for me to stay abreast of which games I might really like.  The kinds of games I really like nowadays are of the Jonathon Boakes variety; I also like Dreamfall-style games, and of course anything Myst-y, but I find I prefer more 'human scale' spooky games involving haunted train stations, lighthouses, or Cornish towns rather than uber-grand epic fantasies.  Anyway, is there any particular part of the JustAdventure site or fora, or someplace else online, where I can ask something like "What is a game like Lost Crown?" I can scan through the 'reviews' section of course, and that has been useful in the past, but I just wondered if there was a more efficient way to go about it.  Thanx!

Chuck

The most effective way would probably be to ask here

And to answer the question asked in your post:
Check out Barrow hill (if you want a more classic AG experience) or Penumbra (if you don't mind a fare bit of action sequences).

As suggested above, this is a good place to get some ideas, but also, Amazon.com has become an excellent place to get user reviews of almost anything eg. type in Lost Crown and you'll find 64 reviews; type in Barrow Hill and there are 44 reviews.

The future ain't what it used to be!

You could try out Rhiannon.  I presume you've already played Black Mirror?  Sanitarium is not spooky but it is a weird experience. (Your best bet the copy for sale at GOG - it's compatible with modern OS's)

You could try out any of the "Last Half of Darkness" games for a very spooky atmosphere.

If you like H.P. Lovecraft, you could try "
arkness Within: in Pursuit of Loath Nolder" and it's sequel.

I personally enjoyed 'Sherlock Holmes : The Awakened' very much; there are quite a few scenarios in the game with a spooky atmosphere.

If you haven't played "Scratches" yet, you could also try that.

I'll second Penumbra, which is wonderfully creepy and just a blast to play.  Here's a few you might want to check.

Amber - Awesome, but VERY dated.  If you don't mind that, it's great.  I liked it way better than any of the Darkfall games.
Scratches
Sanitarium - Again, dated.
Last Half of Darkness series, though I haven't played the final one yet so I can't vouch for it.  The first 2 were great fun in a campy kind of way.
Delaware St. John series - Won't exercise your brain much, but they're fun and creepy.
Rhiannon - I bought this, but I haven't gotten around to trying it yet.  Sounds like it might be exactly what your looking for, but again, I can't vouch for it personally.

I know I'm missing a bunch.  I'll add later.  Good thread.  I love these kinds of games, too, and have often wondered which I'm missing.

Hmm. Though yours looks neater...

Btw, I'm notorious for reading thoughts and posting while the mind being read is still composing (and tidying up) their post, so beware....

Another oldie:  Necronomicon.  I always get my tongue twisted with that one.
