Have Alter Ego installed in XP on the Practice PC # 1 (set up as a dual boot - Vista/XP), and have applied the German patch plus a Java plugin.

Then when game crashed afterwards, the error tech report said this -

AppName: rundev.exe
AppVer: 1.9.4.9
ModName: rundev.exe
ModVer: 1.9.4.9
Offset: 0001780f

A google search of "rundev.exe 1.9.4.9 turns up this

Post about Alter Ego rundev.exe at VeryCD     (which I translated from Chinese) -

Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

I believe the games uses Java programming language (which I don't wish to hack) which led me to using the Java plugin on the game after applying the patch. In an attempt to google for a fix for this crash issue, I found this info about the exception code:

So, what is an access violation, a C0000005? This is the translated #GP code the fault handler raises, which the operating system displays as an 'Access Violation', whos numerical form is c thousand 5. Its the operating system telling you that a program has malfunctioned and tried to reference no mans land. It has nothing specific to do with any particular program, or a brand of software, this is straight from the CPU and kernel of the operating system.

Found this regarding Offset 0001780F - Found that "offset" is memory addy

File pos   Mem pos      ID   Text
0001780F   0041780F      0   l0Ug;8

Found this Debugging Exception Codes

- d/l MS VSExpress 2010 so am going to play around with these error codes. What do you guys think of this?

Did it work before you used the patch?

What Java plug-in are you talking about? A plug-in for a web browser won't affect a game unless it's a game that plays inside your web browser.

There is an Alter Ego online life simulation browser game that uses Java.
http://www.playalterego.com/

Is that what you're playing? It's not the adventure game that uses Java.

Well, I don't think installing Java would hurt anything, even if it doesn't help with this particular game.
I forget what type of video card you have in the Practice PC, but the Alter Ego requirements I've seen say it needs "Video Card : 128 MB VRAM – NVIDIA Geforce 6600 / ATI Radeon 9600 or better."

Since I couldn't get the apps for visual basic (Visual Studio Express) d/l on the Practice PC as I don't have the network/wifi card, I installed VB on my Dell Dimension (will install game on the morrow), FYI the Dell has a NVidia GeForce 64 MB DDR GeForce3 Ti 200 with the updated driver that you (or Inland) found for me back in July/Aug of this year.

According to the system requirements, the Geforce 3 is a few generations too old to run the game. That may be the source of your memory errors. I'm not sure why you're installing Visual Basic on your computer unless you want to practice programming with it.

No worries, Jenny - I'll just wait until after I build my new PC and then tinker with the game then. If the exception code still occurs from the game in my new PC, I'll use Visual C++ (or Visual Basic/Visual C#) Express which I d/l free from MS, to debug the exception codes. Plus, I've just gained an understanding of what an exception code is.

It will probably work on a new computer.
And if it doesn't, it will be because of SecuROM and not the lack of an adequate video card.

Keep in mind that SecuROM blacklists debugging software.
That means it will block the  game from playing if it detects debugging software on your hard drive, including some of the Sysinternals utilities from Microsoft. Never mind that the specific debugging software that is used to crack game copy "protection" is updated regularly to avoid being blacklisted -- and that it's the legitimate debugging software used to troubleshoot progams that gets blacklisted.

To Inland - now that you have the game, are you going to use MS Visual Basic, etc. Express to troubleshoot the rundev.exe exception codes or use some other method of troubleshooting the exception codes - if so, what software/what method will/are you using?

I'd like to know so I can also troubleshoot exception codes in either Alter Ego or other PC games that may also come with SecuRom built into them, in the event that I might be of help to someone in the future - and also to experience the joy of being able to solve game problems like this on my own as I gain experience tinkering with games and computers.

What are your hardware specs, Inland?

And Jenny100 - what are your hardware specs (as of Aug. 2010 when you couldn't get the game to play)?
