Blue Madonna, the 7th Carol Reed Murder Mystery winner will be released well before Christmas 2010. Another murder mystery set in Sweden developed by Mikael Nyqvist with full speech and subtitles all in excellent English.

A free demo will appear on the "MDNA Games" site above very shortly. Also orders will be taken to purchase there or from JA+ Store, or of course from the publishers.

Deleted UserSome further info ………

A full playable free demo to be uploaded around the end of November 2010

And the full game in DVD case or downloadable with no DRM of any sort, to be released  before December 10th 2010 - hopefully, well before that date. A full walkthrough will probably be released together with the game, although it is really superfluous since every singe action is covered automatically by the ingame built-in hints – an almost unique system which tells the player what to do next at every stage even though the game is mainly non-linear and can be played in an infinite number of ways and routes.

Neither version has any DRM or other sort of copy protection.
These are a double whammy for the honest adventurer.  They do not stop any of the huge crowd of pirates since the cracks are in place within hours of game release.  This is a double whammy for the purchasers – they have all the nasty restrictions of the so called copy protections and have to pay for that privilege – the copiers are free from both.

The majority of developers who foolishly use them are losing money rather than saving it for several reasons. They must be blind, deaf and dumb and are cutting their own throats. No wonder many are in increasingly financial difficulties.
Mikael however is in no such difficulty although he has added no copy protection on any of his seven games.  He has a publisher, a distributer, and has had most of his games translated into French, German, and Italian and Russian,
His anti DRM policy does not seem to hurt his games income – of course the quality and popularity of his games vouches for that – and despite the pessimism held by some over the gloomy state of AGs at present.

Deleted UserBlue Madonna demo will be available for free download (with NO DRM whatsoever of course)  within a day or two most probably. None of those delays or stoppages as fully detailed in another thread here -DNA only promises when it is absolutely ready to actually deliver.
It will be a fairly long fully playable demo, and will add a playable tutorial and unique built in dynamic hint system for those that want or need these.

There will most probably shortly be a walkthrough written by Len Green who is the alpha and beta tester and Creative Consultant of Blue Madonna.

Deleted UserI shan't be adding anything to this thread .
In the thread here called "" members bemoan the deterioration of the AG genre. They quote games and publishers they liked which have been aborted or seriously delayed or where they have been mucked around.
This is most probably true but is possibly the cup which is half empty. The cup however may be simply just half full.

The choice of games seems to be rather arbitrary and subjective.  There are others which are good from developers who are 100% reliable and provide first class after sales service.

One such developer is Mikael Nyqvist.  His 7 games are not block-Busters but of excellent value for money, cheap, solid, with no bugs, and interesting – in short excellent B+ to A- games,

Jenny100 here, is an excellent and wonderfully reliable objective mistress of the facts of the AG world. She is also one of the moderators of Gameboomers. She can verify that when Blue Madonna was posted there a little while ago there was immediate encouraging enthusiasm and 34 posts and fairly quickly.
On JA+ which caters for a reasonably similar demographic and type of game players - a deafening silence.

Food for thought IMO. It seems to be very much that this complete difference is not based upon objectivity, bit on personal subjective emotions and personal animosities which are harmful and even destructive.

This might have to do with our experience with the games. I have meant to give these games a try at some point, but I have not done so as of yet, so I really have had nothing to add to this thread, as I have no experience with them. This might well be the case for many others as well.

That was not a very nice thing to say. How does this poster know what goes on in our minds?  ..

Plus how rude to compare us in such a derogatory way to members of a different forum.

Not to mention telling us that our reason either for or against purchasing a certain game is based on:  personal subjective emotions and personal animosities which are harmful and even destructive.
Excuse me? I once had a look at the Carol Reed games and didn't enjoy the gameplay, and now this person comes along and tells me the above?  Not that I even know what personal animosities he is talking about - I have never known or met the developer, and I probably never will.
I personally take exception against the quoted post, I'm sorry.

However, I won't be saying any more on the subject in any further posts, I'm not interested in getting involved in petty squabbling of any kind.

Interestingly, Ohdannyboy only seems interested in a game, btw, if it sports a walkthrough written by Len Green. One wonders why.

I just think it is so rude to go to a website and insult all the members there for no reason other than that they don't immediately make a huge fuss of games which have walkthroughs written by Len Green.

And I think it is a low blow that this poster is now trying to make people feel guilty because they didn't make a huge fuss of the games he came over here to promote.

Get real, sir, -people are entitled to their own tastes - they don't have to oblige you by buying or playing the games you want them to play or purchase.

Oh, and do take note that Ohdannyboy created his "farewell" threads before I made this post, so yeah, I thought that was pretty uncool too.

In fact, in his "farewell" threads, he didn't bother to mention why he is in such a huff, so all I can think of, is that it has to do with these 2 games that he was promoting:  The Treasured Medallion and Blue Madonna, which apparently didn't meet with the reception he had expected.  :-?

Deleted User[size=14] "Hello, Goodbye" – with apologies to Paul McCartney.
A one-off post.

Many thanks DannyBoy for all your Blue Madonna info and input.

Just some very latest updates – almost all actually available on the MDNA site.
http://www.mdna-games.com/Blue_Madonna/demo.htm

Blue Madonna was ready and due to be released  in boxed-disc form at the be ginning of December 2010.
Its playable demo including its unique dynamic built-in Hint system is posted on the MDNA site.
Although not really needed due to this hint system, the demo walkthrough is posted both on the above MDNA site and also on "Games Over".
http://www.gamesover.com/Carol%20Reed%207/Blue%20Madonna.htm

However, the publishers will be distributing the download version to the various outlets in January 2011. They asked Mikael Nyqvist if he would delay his 'hard copy' version for release only in January to coincide with the download one, and he agreed.
The ultra-detailed free walkthrough for the full game is already completed and  will be released together  with the game itself.

Bottom line – both versions of Blue Madonna will definitely be released simultaneously in January 2011.

GOODBYE:  AND MERRY XMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Deleted UserI definitely did not intend to post on this thread again but just now I stumbled on the following which may be helpful to some:-

I understand that some members here are also members of the GameBoomers forums and so many probably were aware of the following before me.

I only just now saw that they posted 4 days ago a free draw for 5 copies of Blue Madonna. By now there are about 80 posts from participants.

If anyone here happens to be interested you still have about 16 hours left to try your luck.

Probable release date 2 January 2011.

Good luck for the New Year.

Congrats Len and the Nyqvists.  I hope the game does well.  I would look into the Carol Reed games more actively if I didn't have such a huge backlog of already purchased and some even already started, games waiting for me to finish them.

You know, I've been assuming the "photograph" style would put me off, but then I remembered how much I enjoyed "The Elk Moon Murders"  many years ago.

[edit]
PS.  What a strange man you are Len, to thank yourself!  Talking to your other avatar like that really comes across as a little strange.... but nevermind.  If one has more than one avatar, perhaps they each take on a life of their own!

Im not sure why the original poster is so upset. GB is a very busy forum and of course would have alot of comments on the game. Im not surprised in the least. And Im thnking that maybe the posters here just dont care for them as much.
Also there are ALOT less daily posters here. Thats just the way it is.  [smiley=shrug.gif]

As for me I will definately buy it as Im a very big fan of the Carol Reed games. I have them all and cant even bring myself to trade them. I didnt start to play them till the 3rd. one was released. Got it in a trade and was hooked. Couldnt get the first 2 fast enough.

I love the alotment, the characters, her apt., the backround music., the whole atmosphere is enjoyable to me. I find them to be quiet and relaxing games, at least thats how they feel to me. And I always feel like Im visiting with an old friend when I start a new one.
Not to long, not to short, not to easy and not to hard.

Of course not everyone will have that opinion.

Hi Helen,
Nice that you enjoy the Carol Reed games.

IMO they are excellent adventures. Not blockbusters or record world shattering games – but simply very good  satisfying entertaining interactive puzzle mystery games.

They are relatively cheap but nevertheless all have been quite a financial success story as well as attracting a large body of fans.
Incidentally, Mikael Nyqvst never includes ANY sort of copy protection on his CD's. He knows that a very great number are pirated, but he also knows that any form of copy protection simply victimizes legitimate gamers whilst doing nothing whatsoever to deter or even disturb the illegal ones!

Seven have now been released to date – one every year regularly.
Apart from the intrinsic quality of the games, to date, during all this time, to the best of my knowledge, there  has been no single substantiated complaint of a bug, or dead end, or crash, or even errors in the English dialogs. A great achievement for a solo Indie developer IMHO.

I like the Carol Reed games, they're nice little diversions. Not classics, but worth their money for sure. Lots to explore, interesting stories, nice characters. I like the references they keep putting in their games e.g. a motorcycle with an Len Green number plate (he played Oscar in Black Circle by the way, and I believe one of his daugthers or granddaughters played Milly), a newspaper article written by Roberta Williams, boxes of adventure games next to a computer...

And yes, I beta tested two of them, but I didn't have anything to do with the last few games so I'm not being paid or anything to say this. Just my honest opinion.
Beta-tester of 'The Path', 'Rhiannon', 'Scratches', 'Hope Springs Eternal', 'Time Stand Still', 'Frasse and the Peas of Kejick', '1893: A World's Fair Mystery', 'Carte Blanche' and 'Oakhaven Plantation' a.o.&&

ohdannyboy11, there are a number of sites  dedicated to adventure games but it is pretty obvious from their forums that they all have different 'personalities' & focuses within them. A site like GB always attracts a lot of enthusiasm on the announcement of new games but  I've always found members of JA & other AG site to be a lot more reserved until a game actually appears.

There have been quite a few games 'promised' that just haven't ever materialised so an announcement of a pending game can 'wash over' until it has actually been released. So I don't think it should be assumed that a lack of response on the announcement of a game means anything more!

On the subject of 'Blue Madonna', I have played all of the previous Carol Reed games & couldn't agree more on your praise of them & am so looking forward to playing the latest! I love the way that an independant developer can consistently produce such good intriguing mysteries with believable characters through a series of photographs -at least the last one I played in you could turn around in some locations & get a sense of a full 3D environment - also I liked the inclusion of the real historical references.

The fact is that the style of the game is not going to appeal to all players but if you are thinking that these games are another Capri or Anacapri which (not to knock the games) kept you wandering around - the Carol Reed games, although similar in graphical style, get stuck into the plot pretty quickly which moves along at a reasonable pace as in most good adventures & the photography is stunning!

Deleted UserI know that pretty well every game has it's pros & cons, and also gamers who enjoy it and those who dislike it. Sometimes the reasons for the likes & dislikes are objective, but more often they are very subjective since we all have tastes which appeal to us and the opposite.

Carol Reed games are no exception to the above. I have not heard that any of the 7 games are magnificent or 'the best ever' etc. But on the other hand I haven’t read anywhere that they are BAD or duds or flops or whatever.
It is however very pleasing to read from [size=14]Loobiloo & Halcyon that they think so highly of them and enjoy them so much! It is good that they add to the welfare of the Adventure genre so beloved by all of us here!

Amongst other attributes, it is worth noting how cleverly Mikael weaves together true ancient Swedish history and religion and contemporary life and narratives.. Indeed it is often impossible to know exactly what is fact and what is pure fiction.

Blue Madonna takes the player to a Medieval monastery and its female Saint, Roman ruins and a modern church, whilst also visiting a defunct local factory once the centre of world nylon-stocking production and an ultra modern equipped  pop music studio – and many more interesting locations and events.

I wonder if you will unravel the mystery before Carol does - at the end of the game?

I have just finished Blue Madonna and enjoyed it very much. Not only can Mikael make some pretty good adventures by himself he is an excellent photographer as every shot is just beautiful. I am sure glad that he has dropped the heavy water color filters he used in his earlier games. Thanks Mikael.

Deleted UserI have to say the demo for Blue Madonna this latest installment in the CR series really looks great. Thanks for all the helpful comments here, much appreciated.  I’m looking forward to playing all of the games, even a re-play of the one (can’t remember which) that I got to play a while back for free. Repeated phrase from other posts: I need more games like this.

Now that is something that I had wanted to hear!  IIRC the main reason I had never tried these games out before, is that they were download only?  If they've been in boxed form before, I humbly apologise.
In any case, I'll try to get around to playing the demo this weekend still.

Deleted UserTrav,
Rather strange!

I know that you are a dedicated game lover (not only pure adventures) and wondered why you had not played even one – even if only to decide never to play another hehehe. The up to date murder mysteries are very well crafted generally with a whdunnit twist,

The series started 7 years ago with only boxed CD games deliberately made with NO copy protection or other limitations whatsoever.(not even having to keep the CD in the drive).  Each one was preceded by an excellent playable demo and followed by an extremely detailed walkthrough by Len Green.  This was before the unique built-in dynamic hint system was introduced which actually makes walkthroughs superfluous IMHO).
They were always available for purchase both from Mikael's MDNA site and from the excellent JA+ store.

The download version was only inaugurated by BigFish about 2 or 3 years ago (I believe with anti-copy limitations ???) and followed by other portals.  They are cheaper than the already fairly cheap disc copies which nevertheless continued to sell well until today.

Ah, in that case it's my bad for not checking properly.  :-[  Glad to hear, anyway,  that they indeed have boxed copies for all  the games, and feeling rather silly that I'd made assumptions based on the download versions that I saw.

I agree wholeheartedly.
However, he has also 'invented' seven interesting mysteries and narratives and is a first-class programmer.
In addition he is a pretty gifted musician having composed & played ALL the completely original music for each of his 67 games.
He is actually a very jovial fella with an excellent sense of humour (In English anyway – no idea how good in his native Swedish). Nevertheless some of his music tends to have that Scandinavian melancholy of Grieg and Sibelius.

EDIT:- Error!
7 games as yet - mot 67 ... at least not so far !!! :

I have finished Blue Madonna also and had to register just to post my accolades for this game.  Playing Carol Reed games is like visiting with an old friend.  There are no glitches or tinkering to be done to make them perform the way they should throughout the game.

The scenery is wonderful and the characters delightful.  I learn so much every time I play one of these games.  I feel like I have been on a vacation.

The only issue that I have with the games is that there is only 1 a year.  I would like to see more of them because they are such good entertainment.
