I'd suggest trying a cracked executable.
You can't kill someone in a studio.

What specifically crashed?
rop to desktop, BSOD etc... The version of Starforce that shipped with the game is fully supported by XP, Vista and above requires a NoCD patch.

I have it running under Virtual PC (XP SP3) as well as native Windows 7.

What?

Yeah, as far as I can recall, my game played fine under XP.

Are you running it with the patch?
I don't have technical knowledge. To use the patch needs hacker skills.

No patch is required under XP, only Vista and above will need it. This is because the publisher doesn't provide a means of updating the DRM software.

To bypass DRM all you need to do is locate and replace a set of files with the updates.

Google The Black MirrorNoCD. You'll find it.

Edit -

Try applying the patch - The Black Mirror Patch

I don't recall having to apply it under XP, but it's worth a shot.

What?

I am using XP. Did you play the game without a patch?

How did you get yourself out of "starforce"?

I didn't - I let it install... If your PC has issues with it, install the update patch (it addresses Starforce).

What?

From what I've read, if you want to use the NoCD, you have to use it before the first time you try to start the game. StarForce doesn't install when you install the game. Instead it installs the first time you try to start the game. And if it installs it can mean the NoCD won't work. If that happens you have to uninstall StarForce before you can use the NoCD.
