Thief series... Games I will remember till my own death...
I enjoyed playing them sooooo much...

I played all three of them several times, first on my XP machine and then on Vista - got them work with no problem, more or less. My favourite one of the series was, with no doubts, Thief 2 - I played it the most times and with many many MODs installed.

Now that Thief 4 is emerging on the horizon I'm getting more and more thrilled about it and seriously considering to install Thief 2 again on my Win7 x64 notebook - seeing that so much effort is still being put into the series to work on modern machines makes me confident I'll make it work, too...

Hi Slyva, and glad you enjoyed the series so much...check the thread here and see if you are interested in the updated texture packs..the player communty has made some amazing improvements including improved textures for the entire game, better sky boxes and so forth.

Hey Cris

So, I installed Thief 2 yesterday and installed all the improvements, too - t2skies, hi-res textures, etc. The game looks awesome now, much much more better than I remember it. I'm experincing one problem, though - game crashes everytime it's trying to play movies. Haven't found a solution yet but I think it's only a matter of time...

Btw, I always played and still am playing the game on the expert difficulty - no other diff is challenging enough...

It is most likely a codec related issue. Try to uninstall any video codecs that you have, as there are some that are known to cause issues with Thief. It might also be that you don't have the right codec installed.

Thanks very much...

I knew about the codec and video issues from my previous installations. But even though I disabled ffdshow and libavcodec for Indeo codecs in both x32 and x64 ffdshow video settings, game is still trying to use ffdshow.ax - and therefore crashes...

(Btw, Win7 comes with Indeo codecs already installed, so I should have no problem with that...)

I'm still looking for a solution over the net - TTLG, etc.

I finally had time to start looking at THIEF 3 and it is the best of the lot so far graphics..wise.. it is wonderful ...i would say it rivals Oblvion for quality. Eidos sure has specialized in great worlds. I am not sure yet if there is a third person view, i hope so but not at all sure if they did that. The shadow of your figure is a nice touch in first person view.

There is a 3rd person view, something that was introduced to make it more console friendly, but it is rather awkward to use. If you use it you will be able to see exactly why the small movement delay happens when you do certain things though.

ah thanks Fnord, that is great to hear...i figured there might be as you can see amazing details of your own body in first person like your own feet and hands..the lighting and textures in T3 are simply amazing...a step above just about any other 3D world of the time of its release..and most since...

the v key is the switch between third and first person views

The First Person View really adds a lot to the game, i found it very easy to use and actually quite intuitive..for they keep the figure facing in the way you are moving and if you rotate the camera it stays in place..the shadows and light sources in this game are nothing short of amazing...one of the best made 3D worlds i have studied yet..and the NPCs are very sophisitcated with both individual lines, over 300,000 lines in all of spoken dialog but they actually respond individually and inteligently to each new action making the replay of this game enormous., There are as well many tweaks, mods and add ons from the community that gives new outfits ...new textures and you can tweak the GUI to remove the bothersome objects that the default layout puts on the screen....

Thief 3 Tweak Guide

remarkable achievment but i have come to expect that from Eidos surely along with Bethesda the masters of 3D worlds....well we should include Crytek in that too.
