The White Chamber is a really good horror game, if you like horrors. Don't let the anime style fool you.
Another favourite of mine is The Endless Forest, although it is more of an artsy game without a goal. You run around a forest as a deer, you let other players change your pelt & antlers. No names, no chat, only body language. It's relaxing.

http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue#adventure/ Most are $5 to $10 USD, so it's near as free as you can get.. some classics there too.
I forgot, they have free games too:
Lure of the Temptress: http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/lure_of_the_temptress
Beneath a Steel Sky (yay Revolution!): http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/beneath_a_steel_sky
Teen Agent (never heard of this one): http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/teenagent

There are plenty of good freeware games (wasn't there a thread about them not long ago?) so it would be nice to know what kind you prefer -Comedy, horror, drama, sci-fi?
For a start I recommend "Mental Repairs, Inc" - it has very high quality for a freeware game, and an original concept.

| Deleted User | Grateful thanks for your interest and advice and help, Donna - Thanks. Yes I played White Chamber and was very impressed. I haven't played Endless Forest yet but I'll try it on your recommendation, thanks. Akhilles - That is a good suggestion I haven't tried. Please let me know who do I conctact and how. thamx Shany - Thank you. I have played a good few dozen freeware adventures but neither of the 2 you mentioned. I particularly like the sound of Mental Repairs Inc and will try it next. I particularly like a good story and particularly if it has some really good humor. If you have time and do not mind the hassle do know the link for that previous thread? TIA Igor and UKpetd - Thanks. I haven't had time to examine fully, but will do ASAP

A few more recommendations -
The Vacuum has a strong story and multiple endings.
Most games by Dierdra Kiai are funny (though the newest ones are more stories than games) http://www.deirdrakiai.com/my-games/
Some older games you may have played: Nathan's Second Chance is what I can only call a 'feel-good' game.
The Uncertainty Machine is quite old (and buggy on some machines) but the game world and story are quite strong.
Da New Guys is quite funny and long.
Some other funny games are Aftershocked! which has very sick humor, and the Reality on the Norm series.

Status : Offline | Welcome...and there are indeed some nice games that are available that were once charged for but are now free due to the generosity of the developers and rights holders..the two mentioned above are the fullest adventure games for free....
Beneath a Steel Sky Flight of the Amazon Queen and you have been able to get them here, long before the advent of GOG....indeed this is where THEY got them:
http://www.scummvm.org/downloads/
ScummVM is a free emulator...ie an engine that runs older games on modern computers with no muss and no fuss..it runs all the classic Lucas Arts games like Monkey Island ...(the great pirate games), The Dig ( a sci fi title), Sand And Max hit the Road (the original), The Day of the Tentacle..a zanny early animated game.... LOOM very early and very beautiful game...., the great and beautiful Kyrandia Series, I, II and III, and many more...these are available many of them quite cheaply on Amazon and other purveyors....and the ScummVM engine runs them all beautifully.
Two more early and wonderful titles The Broken Sword I and II, mystical historic games.....are a bit more expensive but ScummVM runs them perfectly and they have the videos for them converted on their site too
welcome and enjoy adventuring...we all do

| Deleted User | Nice to see that I'm not the only one who plays freeware games and enjoys them, or at least the good ones. I have played many of the games you have mentioned and recommended but certainly not all. Thanks and also for the link to the back thread. As far as I remember here is the list of freewares you have posted and that I have already played . I have played other very good freeware games not mentioned, they are all games I have enjoyed but not necessarily all the very best. The White Chamber – very good Beneath a Steel Sky Lure of the Temptress The Uncertainty Machine Flight of the Amazon Queen Ben Jordan Series – I like these short games very much Blackwell Legacy - horrifying Other Worlds – A long and good game made by Alkis Five Magical Amulets Deirdra Kiai – A very talented young lady. The Alast one I played however was the very good "Game that takes place on a cruise ship", a proper adventure Frasse and the Peas The Nick Bounty Games – also very enjoyable The Shivah Brain Hotel

I think ohdannyboy meant it has a tense atmosphere.
Anyway, it's worth noting neither Blackwell Legacy, nor The Shivah are freeware.

| Deleted User | Terribly sorry Shany and Igor. I mixed it up with "The Blackstone Chronicles," John Saul's. I don't go a bundle on horror games. In any case the few that I've played and which I have read about are spine chilling etc. are not horrific at all. To me. I don't want to mention examples. But Blackstone was really a horrorshow. Mainly for what it described rather than what it actually showed. The horrors of the asylum and sadistic goings on there were largely left to your imagination. I played it several years ago but still remember some of the cruel details. Just my 2c of course. Apologies Igor. If I remember correctly Blackstone is over 10 years old although I picked it up very cheaply not too long ago. It wasn't freeware and I'm pretty sure that it is not now.

| Deleted User | Hi Igor, Thank you for telling about the games which are not freeware. I have not played Blackwell Legacy which I mixed up with Blackstone Chronicles which as far as I know is also not freeware. I played Shivah when it was freeware. It had no speech only subtitles. I think that later speech was added and it was expanded and is sold cheaply. But I have not played that version. I have downloaded a lot of freeware games from AGS which is a good freeware game engine although I have been told that Wintermute is better, but I would not know. AGS has a lot of very good games which are short and some which are long. I wonder who prefers what.

Also, here's the list of Wintermute games in case you haven't seen it: http://dead-code.org/home/index.php/games/ Out of those I recommend Dead City, Dirty Split and Rosemary. The list is not up to date since Trader of Stories is now out (haven't played it yet).
Oh, and did you see the new feature over at Adventure Gamers? They now review the freeware games released each month: http://www.adventuregamers.com/article/id,1224 (there was one for August as well)

Nope, the Wintermute Trader of Stories is still months away, the game that got released is a much shorter spin-off done in Flash and presented in first person perspective - a prequel/teaser to the original Trader of Stories project.

| Deleted User | Hi and thanks for the interest and help. Some while ago when it was first released I downloaded episode 1 of The Silver Lining with no difficulty. I played just a little and was not too thrilled. Now that episode 2 has been released I've tried several times to download both 1 and 2 but for some reason had troubles even from Phoenix Online I do not know why, but I am sure I'll get them. However is it worth the hassle? The reviews, including the latest on JA+ are not too encouraging. I prefer long games and a read that these are short. Although to be fair they are only 2 of several episodes making in all a reasonable length game

| Deleted User | I still haven't managed to download Silver Lining --- now there is some mess up with the registration. I've just now downloaded Snakes of Avelon and will give it a try. I believe that it is your game Igor Congratulations.. By the way do many freewares come with full speech or is it only games that have been moved from commercial to freeware? I mean what percentage have speech would you think?

Yep, Snakes of Avalon is mine. I've made it together with Alex van der Wijst who is a veteran amateur adventure games designer. I hope you'll enjoy playing our creation.

Not many freewares have full speech (it takes a lot of additional work), but at this point in time there are already a few.
2 years ago it was so uncommon that when someone made a free game with speech everyone was like "Wow! A free game with speech! I must play it!" But right now there's quite a choice of freewares with speech, as well as some commercial adventures games without it. People no longer obsess so much about voice-overs.
Speech is of course still appreciated by players, but it doesn't make the games stand-out so much anymore.

| Deleted User | IGOR Hi
Speech in a computer game, freeware or commercial, can be a two edged sword. On the one hand, if done extremely well it can add a very great deal to the atmosphere of the game. But for this it is advisable to use experienced professional voice actors and actresses. And this together with an excellent sound studio can be expensive. Using friends or relatives etc. unless extraordinarily talented is often disastrous and rather than that it is better to do without voice overs imo. Care must frequently be taken with synchronization of speech and mouth and also facial expressions. Also good technical recordings etc. are essential. Many folk are terribly fussy, and often unjustifiably so. I have seen so very many times players and more importantly reviewers on Forums etc. viciously criticizing a game because they don't like the main characters voice. Often it is merely a matter of individual taste but it can sometimes absolutely ruin the reputation and success of a game and often quite unfairly.

For a very funny game have you tried the rather old but zany Jessica Plunkenstein and the Dusseldorf Conspiracy??

| Deleted User | Hi IGOR
I am trying to play your :"Snakes of Avalon". I need to use an inventory but I cannot find it anywhere so I can't proceed very far. I looked all over the game-screen, clicked mouse, pressed function keys, etc. etc. No success. I looked at the very few game instructions that I could find and although some references to using the inventory, I couldn't find any reference to accessing the inventory.
Maybe I'm particularly dumb Please help me asap, TIA.
Wasn't Quinky's, (forgotten her correct name --- Kiai or similar) Game to play on a cruise ship rather humorous?
What is the longest freeware game anybody's played??

The Fool's Errand, definitely. Other Worlds and (from what I've heard, as I haven't played it) A Tale of Two Kingdoms are quite long as well.
