Hello all, I'm new here and need your help.

I bought an HP Mini 210-1150 netbook. It is an N455 cpu, 1Gb ddr3 ram, and a 250Gb HDD 7200rpm. Not too shabby I thought.

So far I have had no luck installing any of my adventure games on this netbook. I tried Niburu, Paradise, and Return to Mysterious Island.

I have considered purchasing and downloading a game directly onto the netbook but I don't want to pay for a game just to find out it won't work.

This was supposed to be a Christmas present for my wife. She enjoys playing adventure games on the DS. We also play adventure games together on  our entertainment PC but most of the time she likes to relax on the couch and play games while we watch TV.

Is this a lost cause? Can you play adventure games on a netbook? Is there a list of games that will work on a netbook?

I'm on the verge of returning this netbook but maybe I'm just missing something. If you folks could help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Well, here's my input - if she's interested also in these old adventure titles - DOS/Windows 95/98 PC games, you can d/l & install the latest DOSbox, Virtual PC and VMWare Player (used for these games that crash under Virtual PC - they run just fine in VMWare Player. For VPC/VMWare Player and running these Win95/98 games, you can install a guest OS (Windows 95, 98, or 98SE) just to run these older games.

I also have a netbook (Asus Eee PC) which I bought last week of January 2010 and it's excellent for running older games.

Tiddler, if you could be more specific about the kinds of trouble you're encountering, it might be easier to help.
You can't kill someone in a studio.

When I tried to run Keepsake, the image was 4:3 with the bottom part of the screen off the bottom of the 16:9 netbook screen. Of course the controls are all at the bottom and since I can't see them I can't play the game.

I could not get Niburu or Return to Mysterious Island to run at all.

I finally bit the bullet and I am currently downloading Mechinarium from steam. We will see how that goes.

For Nibiru, here are the system requirements -
Pentium III 800 or equivalent
RAM:
128 MB
Video Memory:
32 MB
Hard Drive Space:
2500 MB
Other:
32 MB DirectX 8.1-compliant video card
Recommended System Requirements
System:
Pentium III 1.3 or equivalent
RAM:
256 MB
Video Memory:
64 MB
Other:
64 MB DirectX 8.1-compliant video card

For Return to Mysterious Island, the system requirements -

• Windows® 98/ME/2000/XP
• 600 MHz Pentium® III or Equivalent (800 MHz Recommended)
• 16x CD-ROM Drive (24x CD-ROM Drive Recommended)
• 64 MB DirectX® Compatible 3D Video Card
• DirectX® 7 Compatible Sound Card
• 64 MB RAM

I think these games require a dedicated 3D card which most netbooks lack (this includes my Eee PC netbook).

Here is a link to the netbook specs:  http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/ca/en/ho/WF06b/321957-321957-3329744-3832383-3832383-4151684-4222509.html

It seems like it should be powerful enough to run these two games.

Since I did not have a DVD drive on the netbook I installed them on my PC at home. Then copied the contents of the game's folders to a usb drive. I then tried running them off the usb drive on the netbook.

I wonder if I had used an external DVD drive on the netbook and installed the games directly on the netbook if they would have run ok. If I knew for sure then a usb DVD drive is not that expensive and would be worth it.

I haven't tried these games on my netbook but mine runs XP SP 3 and it is in the shop for the time being, and I won't get it back until around Oct. 21 or later.

I accidentally started three threads on this topic.

I will continue the discussion in the Adventure Game Discussion forum as per a suggestion from another member.
